My fiancé and I got in engaged in October, a few weeks after his mother had extensive back surgery. We want to have an engagement party once his mother has recovered more....is it okay to break the three month etiquette rule and have a party in the spring?

I would say that would be okay given the circumstances. Recovering from back surgery is not something to try and rush.
