What do you do if something about your wedding changes after the STDs have gone out?

Unexpected things happen. What happens if you have sent out STDs but not invites, and something about your wedding changes (e.g., date, location, called off, etc.)? Call/email everyone? Send out another mailing?

I was talking to my FI last night about how frustrating my mother is being, and he said, well let's call the wedding off and elope. Now this wont be happening, but I got to thinking, what would we do if it did?

  • Ideally, Save the Dates give only the date and a general location (city). Unless either of those things changes (your wedding gets pushed back a month, or you decide to have it in Vegas instead of your home town) you won't need to let anybody know.

If you do change anything drastic, it is polite to send correspondence that matches your Save the Date. If you sent everyone a post card, drop a note in the mail. If you called to say "hey this is when we're getting hitched," then another phone call would be appropriate.

  • A save the date is not an invitation, and it doesn't have to have any information besides WHO is getting married and WHEN they are getting married (WHERE is also very helpful for out of town guests, or if the couple is getting married somewhere besides their current location).

So, let's say you've sent our your save-the-dates and then you elope. I'd recommend what @Inkdancer recommends: send out something similar to save-the-dates, and have it be all, "Actually, we eloped and now we're married!" If you called people to tell them you picked a date, then call them to tell them the wedding's off.

  • Yeah ours only have our names, date, and city. So if the date or the city changes, should you just send out a new one with the corrected info?

  • Ordering brand new Save the Date cards seems excessive. I'd just drop everyone who needs to know a quick note.
