KAL?

Before the holidays there was some brief throwaway discussion of doing a knit-along (KAL). Is this something people would actually be interested in? What knitting level are people comfortable with, and does anyone have a project idea right offhand?

Re: KAL?

  • Let's do it!!

I am probably about at an intermediate knitting level: I can knit, purl, knit in the round, do cables...etc.

I think a scarf/cowl is a great place to start (but I'm open to other options) - it's cold out there!  And mine will definitely be blue/teal.  Because I'm a boring color person haha.

I just signed up for a crochet a long (well technically it was in December) and failed miserably because I don't crochet as well as I knit, so I can't wait for this!
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton
  • I would be interested in a KAL. I'm intermediate, I haven't tackled lace yet (scary). I'm currently working on two blankets right now, then a blanket for myself and then a blanket for my mom, but something like a scarf could work!

  • Crocheters are welcome as well! I can go look for pretty scarf patterns this evening. Are people willing to tackle cables/lace? No steeking - I'm too scared to cut my own work.
  • I'm up for going along with a crochet pattern. At least as long as it isn't too complicated...or something I'm going to have a hard time following in a Youtube video. ;) Scarves are always nice.

  • What the heck is steeking?! :)  Aw yay we have our first possible crocheter too!  I should totally knit one and crochet one...but then it basically can't be more than single crochet stitches for the crochet, haha, so...yea, I'm better at knitting.  And lace is fun until you lose count but I do like it :)

  • Steeking is cutting through the knitted fabric after reinforcing it with sewing. Usually part of sweater patterns, but I've seen it in some scarves and cowls, too.
  • Sooo I have no ability to actually pick things. Here are some of my favorites so far! Many of these say they are good for first-time lace knitters. All photos are from Ravelry.

Slip-Stitch Cowl. Colorwork is done in rows, so you use a row of A, then a row of B, etc. Yarns are also variegated.

    Thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas?
  • I vote for the garter slipped scarf. I have a hank of KnitPicks swish tonal that I want to use and it would be perfect for that pattern!

  • I second @buddysmom80 . That one is really pretty! I think I could find something similar to try for crochet.

  • Ok, I'll look for a pretty aran-weight synthetic yarn for the garter slipped scarf.
  • Alright let's do this. When should we get materials by?

  • I know @buddysmom80 has materials, and @lmhollister is pattern-hunting ... I would need to pick something up, but at least Joann's looks like they're running good sales right now. Say February 1st?
  • Joann's has awesome quilting sales at the moment, lol.  I wasn't looking for yarn, but should be able to pick some up way before Feb 1st :)  Plus I have gift cards! (I love gift cards)

  • February 1st is fine with me!

  • This will be fun! If you want a color-change acrylic, I like Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable. It's sold at both JoAnn's and Michaels.

I made a scarf out of "dragonfly" and a pair of fingerless gloves out of "parrot." I'm now freehand crocheting legwarmers.
  • @leia1979, that's acrylic?! It's beautiful! Thanks for sharing.

Yup! I'm allergic to wool, so I try to find all the fun acrylic. The only thing I don't like about this yarn is that it's a little fuzzy, so you have to be careful when ripping stitches out so that it doesn't catch on itself. Here's the parrot color.

  • I think I remember you mentioning a wool allergy, too. I'm allergic to wool (and alpaca, cashmere, merino, etc.), so I work primarily in acrylic and cotton. If you ever do any cotton work, Rowan Handknit is wonderful, but more for decorative work and garments than dishcloths and potholders at the price.
  • @leia1979 those colors are gorgeous!!!

  • I was allergic to wool as a kid (like broke out in hives whenever I wore sweaters)...I was in a marching band in HS that wore kilts and wool socks and...lots of wools.  And somehow I didn't die.

Apparently I'm not allergic to wool anymore, but I'm not complaining.  Either way, that acrylic is freakin gorgeous.  I might be making my KAL project out of dragonfly.

I'm thinking tidal or cappuccino, but I'll have to go see them in person.

ETA: I chose tidal. @leia1979, did you find when you purchased this yarn that the skeins in your area varied widely in tone (light/dark)? I think that's an awesome feature of this yarn - easier to match to garments, etc., but what a dye-lot nightmare!
  • Why can't I find the unforgettable yarn at my Joann's?! I will be checking michaels tomorrow. I also have no idea if I have size 9 needles so I will also check that :

  • Blue, I found it at my Michaels. It wasn't with the rest of the Red Heart Boutique line, though.
