Name Envy

Re: Name Envy

  • I don't hate my name I've just never felt like it suits me. But I share my name (both first and middle) with my grandma and aunt and I like that connection so I would never change it.

  • My first name is classic and I love it. My maiden middle name was your first name @urbaneca, and I loved it, too. I dropped it when I got married. I made my maiden name my middle name and took DH'S name.

Despite the classic nature of my name, only twice have I met other people with my name.

  • @bethsmiles - I feel like your name should be something different but I don't really know what. Maybe Amanda.

  • I hate my name always have, my name isn't that common but FSIL has the same name as me so I hypenate my first and middle name so it doensn't sound as bad.  On all wedding stuff we are using my first name hyphen middle name.

  • @Swazzle - I could see Amanda :)

  • I have an old lady name. It has many possible nicknames, but only one that works with my last name, but I think that nickname is ugly...so I'm stuck with my old lady name. I used to hate it, but now I'm just resigned to it. It's me, whether I like it or not. I tried to change it in middle school when I moved to a new school, but it was so weird after the first day that I had to sheepishly tell people to call me by my real name the next day. So embarrassing!
  • I grew to like my name over the years.  When I was a teenager I wanted my name to be Jackie.  My name is Carrie and the only thing that bothers me about it is trying to tell someone over the phone.  They typically say "terri"?  And most people want to spell it with a K.  Kerry, Kerrie, Kari, Cari, Cary.
  • @urbaneca - yes, I am more than likely changing my whole name once married. My whole life I've gone by half of my middle name - and my first name has been nothing than letters on my drivers license and a pain in my rear with ANY sort of paperwork or legal needs.... My name was supposed to be something completely different- but the day I was born right as my mom was filling out the birth cert paperwork my dad decided it was too much like his (Daniel/Danielle) - so I ended up being named after grandma and great-grandma. It's old school Catholic and is TOTAL old lady!!

So yes, I will be changing. Taking the "half the middle name" and making it my first, then adding a new middle name. :)

  • For a girl born in the US in the eighties I have one of the top 5 most popular names- I just googled it. I've never liked it, but I've also never actually gone by it. When I was first learning to speak I couldn't pronounce my name and essentially renamed myself. My brother went along with it and soon afterward everyone else did too. It is amusing though as most people assume my first name must actually be Abigail instead of being unrelated. I also went through most of high school/college not even liking my nickname through; if I could have chosen any name for myself it would probably have been Isabelle Elizabeth. That's my grandmothers name and I've always loved it.
  • I like my name. It's masculine and I have never met another woman with it. But it suits me for some reason.
  • I love love love my name. It's a variation of one of the most popular girl names ever, but I've never met anyone with the same spelling. The only downfall is always having to spell it out for people. It also looks somewhat similar to a commonly used word, so sometimes, my customers just glance at my name in my signature and call me by that word instead, which is annoying (and lazy on their part, I feel).

I wouldn't trade my first name for anything, though, and I've found that most of the girl names I like are those that sound similar to mine. I will be taking my current surname as a second middle name when I get married, though, because it's my (step)dad's last name -- he raised me -- and I feel like I had to work hard to get it changed and I don't want to give it up completely.

I've never really minded my name, and grew up knowing absolutely no one with it. I've always had to spell out my first and last names, due to the unique Scandinavian spellings my parents bestowed upon me.

When I went to college , one of the first people I met not only had my first name, but my middle name too. And spelled exactly the same! We've became really good friends our junior year, and our friends started calling us by first and last initials to differentiate us.

My former teaching partner also had same first name as me, but spelled differently. At the time, we worked in a school where we went by our first names which was often confusing for students. She went by first and last name, and I just went by my first.
    Eta: spacing.

I like my name, everyone who knows me calls me a shortened version of it. Originally my mom wanted to just name me the short nickname, but one of my aunts said it could be too cutesy and I might want a more professional name as an adult. Luckily they listened ...my nickname with my middle name sounds like a stripper :p I've also recently discovered that in Europe my real name is a man's name. This has led to a few surprises when my equipment suppliers meet or talk to me on the phone for the first time

Thing that made me crazy growing up- spelling my real first name wrong. It ends in "is" not "ius" not "a" not "ia"!!!! My last name always gets misspelled and mispronounced, really looking forward to a common, easy last name.

FI goes by his middle name (same first name as his dad). He's still debating what name he wants to use on everything and in ceremony
  • I have a pretty uncommon first name. Most people I've met are older ladies. My middle name is one of the most common ones from the 80's...at least in my circle.

The one annoying thing is people usually misspell my name to the male version. But I'm named after my great-grandmother and grandmother. All my siblings have family names too.

My autistic brother "threw away" his middle name awhile back. Maybe he just does not like the Finnish spellin.

My new last name is Hispanic and can be hard to spell/pronounce. At least I have lots of practice being patient and spelling out names

  • I like my first name and my middle name.  I am thinking about changing my last name to my FI's when we get married because I dislike my last name due the fact that I got it from my father.

  • Wow! I didn't expect so many responses to this! Looks like we have a lot of name envy going on on this board.

@doeydo - I'm with you on the last name thing.

@Senecaf - Would FI consider taking yours?

  • @Urbaneca, I think Elizabeth is a beautiful name, FWIW, but that doesn't really matter since you're not a fan. Which nickname do you go by?

When I was little, I used to HATE my name! I'd "change" it every day, and if people called me by my real name I wouldn't answer. One of my favorites was "Mrs. Long." For the record, I was about six and our last name is definitely not Long. (I was a pretty nutty kid.)

Now, I love my name. It's old fashioned, but I've only ever met one other person with it and tons of people compliment it.

I grew up LOVING my first name because it's unique but also easy to spell.  Both my first and last names are common nouns, which generally makes life (and spellcheck) nice and easy.  And there's a cute story of how my dad named me.

However, I realized in high school that I have a stripper/ cheerleader/ slutty name.  I love my name but I'm about to start practicing as a lawyer and I worry about people taking me seriously.

It would be sort of if my name were.... Raven or Diamond or Angel or something.  Don't want to type it out for fear of searchable-ness later on, but here's a hint:

    Like totally Amber-ular!!!

ETA: I dont think that is a stripper name!

It's a beautiful name, for sure, it's just somebody else's name.

I go by Liz, which was not my choice either. My grandparents call me Bethy, and for about 3 days in high school I went by Elle before I decided that that was even less me. I've also been called Liesl, Les, Lynn, and Lindsay, but that was by people who misheard my name.

  • I was named after my mother, who had a VERY common name for girls born in her age group. So I have a middle-aged womans name. I would like to name my (future/maybe) daughter after us...My sister did give my niece our middle name which was lovely.

  • People say that I look like a Sarah or something similar. I also have a face that can be very similar to the generic face of someone with brown hair and dark eyes and white skin.

At my previous college, there was some weird kid that went around and spoke to girls only. I told him my name was Sarah so whenever he saw me and tried to add me on FB, he looked up a Sarah. I never gave a last name so he couldn't find me anyway.

My grandfather gave me a very traditional Native American name at birth (Myrhjallah), and very few people could pronounce or spell it (including my step-dad), so when I was a teenager my Mom had it changed to something much more 'american". I hate my "new" name and if it wasn't so much of a hassle I would change it back.

I like my name. Although it can be irritating having to always spell it for people. For some reason everyone pronounces it Rafael. I hate that. I'm not a Ninja Turtle or a boy. *sigh*
