I love gel polish! I go every 2-3 weeks for a gel manicure. A regular manicure chips in 1 day for me. I'm not sure why you need to have any length your nails, though. Mine are super short (I am a reformed biter but I don't like the tapping of my nails on the keyboard or phone so I get them cut when I go) and I never have a problem.

I've never gotten my nails professionally done, but my nails always chip within the first 24 hours.  So gel polish sounds like what I should get when the big day comes, I guess.
Do you type a lot for work? I always wonder if that's why mine chip so quickly with regular polish.
I type a lot at work and never had issues with nail polish, until I pick at it. But, when I worked as a cashier mine would be off within a day without me touching them.

Huh, so strange. I hate when they start to chip, I need it all off immediately when that happens.

that's how I am too. I hate the look of them not being uniform.

I do type a lot, I guess, but because I am a student.  My nails are also kind of soft, I think, so that probably doesn't help.

The gel is just a stronger nail polish that stays on longer without chipping.

I am very lucky to have long, rather strong, fast growing natural fingernails.  I have never done gel polish.  I've looked into it a bit and found too many stories of it weakening the nails and making them really thin and brittle. And the removal process of soaking in acetone or grinding off with a dremel (I've seen both at salons) doesn't seem too healthy or appealing to me. I also don't like the risk of the additional UV exposure (something I'm very conscious of living in a desert). And since mine are so strong I really don't want to do anything to mess them up or weaken them. A lot of people love the gel nails, though.  But, I prefer to stick with regular nail polish.  I've even had multiple nail techs tell me to avoid gel since I do have great strong nails and it could ruin them long term.  When I get my nails painted I just put a new clear coat on it every couple days to keep it from chipping or wearing off.  I can usually get it to last 1-2 weeks.

  • in real life I would get just a basic manicure, but my SIL recommended the gel nails and when I saw hers few months before the wedding I was all about it...so I got them for the wedding and I loved them!  They lasted for practically a month and I would get compliments on them all the time.  I have not gotten them since for I do not need "perfect nails" everyday, but next time I am in need a nice pampering or special event I would do them again for sure.
