Furbabies (PIP)

FI and I live together in an apartment and have two kitties.  We'd like to get a dog someday when we get a house.  I'd like to maybe get a Newfoundland, rottweiler, or basset hound.  My FI wants a doberman pinscher.
Here is Cali, we don't know exactly how old she is because when we took her in she looked pretty small but was a stray and ended up being pregnant.  She likes to cuddle and watch the birds come to the feeder on our balcony.  She also gets into playful moods where she will run around with a cat toy and chase her tail.

Here is Maggie.  She is 8 years old and is my baby.  She is shy with strangers, sleeps a lot, likes to lick my chin, and sleeps with me every night.

What kind of furbabies do you have?  Do you want anymore?  Pictures welcome :)

Re: Furbabies (PIP)

  • The doggy is Laci. Excuse the cone on her head she just had surgery on her ear for a hematoma. She is 8 years old. I got her from the little old woman who used to live next door to me. She had cancer and was being moved to a hospice and she asked me to take her because she thought I would take better care of her baby than her children would. The calico kitty is Callie. I found her wandering my old neighborhood. I asked around and it turned out she was a stray that one of my neighbors left. So I took her in with the intention of finding her a new home. Two years later she is still with me. Lol. The poor little thing walks with a limp. The vet thinks that at some point she was kicked. Idk if it was by her old owners or some random person but I'm glad to know she is safe now. This third picture is my cat Kitten (also my avi). Kitten passed away Monday night. He was 16 years old and I had him since the day he was born. My mom used to foster cats and one of the cats she fostered was pregnant. Kitten was one of the little. Most people keep the runt of the little but Kitten was the biggest and the first to venture away from momma cat. He came right up to me and meowed. He used to follow me around all the time. We liked to say that he chose me. We ended up keeping all of that litter. I took Kitten and my sister took one of the kittens and my mom kept the momma cat and the other kitten. My Kitten was the last who was still living. So we are all pretty heart broken about losing him.
  • This is Sophie, otherwise known as Sopherkins. She's 8, too and also MY baby. She loves wet food, looking outside and snuggles.
  • I also have two kitties.

Peanut, we think is about 5 years old. She's a mixed shorthair, with at least some Egyptian Mau genes. I found her stuck on a window ledge outside my HR lady's office the day before a long weekend in 2012. She was wearing a collar, but was severely malnourished, dehydrated, and covered in her own poo. We were originally told that she was an unneutered male under a year. We spent 3 months trying to find her owners or a foster home for her, because we weren't supposed to have more than one cat in our apartment, but when that didn't work out we made ourselves her forever family. We took her to the vet to get her shots, and the vet informed us that not only was she not male, but she was also at least 4 years old. She is very shy, but also very loving. She likes to lick my fingers and toes, and loves rubbing up against people's feet. She has huge yellow-green eyes, and when she flattens her ears she looks just like Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon.

Milla is also about 5 years old, she's also a shorthair, and definitely has African wildcat genes. She looks like an African wildcat in miniature only more grey. She has HUGE bat-like ears, so I sometimes call her Bat-cat or Cornchip-cat. FI had her long before I was in the picture, so while she took an immediate liking to me the first time I had a movie night with FI, she was much less keen on me once I moved in. We went through about 6 months of her clawing me every chance she got, but she hasn't done that in a long time.

We're living with the FILs, who also have 1 cat (Terabyte, some sort of longhair something or other), and 2 border collies (Jesse, the pirate dog who only has one eye and a pin/plate in his leg, and Callie, the hyperbouncy puppy who isn't a puppy anymore).

I don't have pictures of the animals though, sadly. Peanut is scared of cameras, and Milla just moves around too much.

After the post, below, I'm so relieved to see some kitty lovers.  If I could have a cat, it would be a calico.

I have two basset hounds. One is a basset mix that is a rescue. She came to CT from AR. Her foster mom rescued her from the pound on her last day, rehabbed her and sent her to CT. Her first 'forever home' didn't work out, so we took her. My other dog is the cutest puppy in the world. She's a dark tri-colored purebred. I wish I could figure out how to post pictures of my furbabies.

@jdluvr06 I'm sorry for your loss. Losing a beloved pet hurts.

  • I have four kitties. I'd post pics but my work computer is a POS. They are Pepper, Gravy, Tater, and Biscuit. They are all gray and white, but different looks. Pepper is a manx, so no tail. She is my baby. She was very sick around Thanksgiving and I didn't think she would make it. Now, I have to decide if I want her to have surgery to remove gall stones and part of her liver. She is 12, so it's a very tough call. Gravy was my DH's cat before we met. He's has the coloring of a Russian Blue, except he has a lone white patch on his tummy. Tater is the "ours" cat we got after we moved in together. He is a Maine Coon. He's a big goof ball and totally a daddy's boy. Then, we have our little one, a shorthair tabby named Biscuit. He is not even 2 years old yet. My SD found him when he was just two weeks old in a busy shopping center in July in Arizona. Poor thing was within a day or so of not making it. She bottle fed him and he became ours. He is my little man and usually hides unless I'm around.

We're not having any children together, so I my kitties are my kids. They mean the world to me and I totally spoil them!!!

I grew up always having a cat, and thankfully, so did FI.

About 2 years before FI and I moved in together, I decided to get a cat. It was lonely coming home from work and not having anyone at home. He helped me pick out a great cat from a local shelter, and we love our Coriander. We call her Cora for short, or sometimes even Pants (comes from her long haired legs looking like she wears pants).

When we had to talked about moving in together, FI had planned on bringing his childhood cat. Sadly, Mitch died about a month before FI's moving date. FI was devastated, but knew right away he wanted another cat. After scouring petfinder, we came across a litter of kittens at a local rescue. We took home one, named him Callahan, and the rest is history. Callahan, who also goes by Cally, is a mischievous but adorable guy. He'll be 2 in a couple of weeks.

  • I have 2 furbabies! One is a 8 year old boxer/lab mix that FI had before we were together. Her name is Molly.  Then, FI and I adopted another dog together after we had been living together for about 6 months.  He's a 1.5 year old Lab/Rott mix (we think).  His name is Wilson (He's the one that is tan, white and black)

Unfortunately, we can't have any kitties because I'm allergic!

    I love seeing everyone's babies :)

I have two. They're both Shetland Sheepdogs. I've grown up with shelties all my life. My parents had them before kids, so I've probably been around 20-30 dogs by now (I'm 24). I definitely want more shelties but sadly my apartment complex only allows 2 dogs per town house. Once we move, have a house and a fence though I will be getting more. Perks of being friends with breeders and vets is there's always puppy breath somewhere :)

My sable (brown, black, white) female is named Honey. She'll be 10 on Sunday. She got her name because my brother hated the word "hun" and "honey" when I was in middle school since I said it often. I then named her that to spite him so he'd have to say it. She was my birthday gift when I was in 8th grade. Best gift ever. She moved to NC with me 2 December's ago. I had to work hard to convince my parents to let her go. After all, she is my dog. I told them all throughout college though that she'll be living with me, so that helped. I show her in Agility. For those who don't know what Agility is, it's when the dogs go over jumps, A-frames, dog walks, teeters, tunnels, jump through tires, weave poles etc.

My other dog is tri (he's black, white and brown) male sheltie name Ruutu. He'll be one years old tomorrow, which is also mine and FI's anniversary of dating. I had to have him because he was born then, even though I wanted a female blue merle.  He's named after Jarkko Ruutu who is a fiinland hockey player who played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2008 during their cup victory. He was the bully of the team and got into tons of fights, including with Jagr during the playoffs. Ruutu fits his name perfectly because he climbs or jumps out of everything. At 3 weeks old he climbed out of his whelping box. At 8 weeks old, he climbed over the gate in my kitchen. He even jumps over the gate starting at 12 weeks old. His latest trick is trying to escape his crate. He's a snot, but he's my snot.  I was on the breeder's/vet's waiting list for him since his mother was a puppy, so it was 3 years before he was born.

  • This is my girl, Thea. I got her when I moved out on my own and she's my spirit animal. She has slowly accepted my husband, who feeds her in the morning and plays with her. But she's still kinda skittish and neurotic.

  • I'd have photos except that my camera phone dumps photos into the aether. (Seriously, my techie BF can't figure out where they go, they're gone.)

Eleanor is a domestic short haired cat (read: mixed breed), but I figure she has Abyssinian in her because she's so active and Siamese because she's so talkative. She has a white chin and stomach, tabby-striped grey/brown and black tail, and the rest of her coat is ticked tabby in brown, grey, white, and black. She picked me as "her human" a long time ago, and I'm not sure whether she views me as human or cat, mother or kitten. She's a good girl - spends the night with me, comes to me for love and attention, and considerately makes sure my right elbow is always perfectly clean.
  • @melbelleup Holy crap they are adorable!! Would you recommend that breed to a first time dog owner? Can you tell me about their tempermant and other things, like are they known to chew up a house or bark a lot? FI and I can't decide on what breed, they say labs are the easiest but I find them so boring looking and think something like this is much cuter!

@jenna8984 It depends. If you're willing to work with them, shelties make great dogs. I recommend checking out sheltieforums.com I'm over there as well as numerous breeders, conformation people, agility people, etc basically anything you can think dog wise. I'd read the forums and especially "considering a sheltie" section. There's ton. They do bark a lot more than most dogs. It depends based on the dog. My female is reactive so she barks at anything that moves including plants, animals, cars, people etc. My male really only barks if someone is at our door or in our back yard and he can see them. As puppies, they do chew up a house pretty good. As they age, they don't. It also depends if you're willing to take classes with them. Shelties need a job. They were bread to herd sheep back in the old days, so if they're not busy they can get into some stuff. They do have high energy as well. Some shelties do make good house pets though if you're not looking into showing them on any level. My 14 yr old boy back at my parents house has only ever been in 1 show and then from there became a house pet with no issues.

With someone who has a lab friend, I can tell you, they are laid back, but you have to be willing to exercise them. My friend's pup isn't even a year old and she runs with him about a mile a day. He also has destroyed their house a few times. Most puppies will. He actually just escaped his crate the same day Ruutu tried to escape his and he destroyed a lot of their apartment.

ETA: we don't do anything too much to exercise my dogs. Just walks, Agility class once a week, a lot of fetch in the house and a lot of tug-o-war. If we had a back yard with a fence I'd let them run. Perks of when we go visit my parents is they get to run. My dogs both have tons of energy, but at the same time will cuddle and sleep with you. These pics are a little dated, but you can see, still cuddle bugs. imageimageThey really adapt to what you want them to be.

  • jdluvr06melbelleup, I LOVE sheltie's!!!!!! When we get a dog, that is exactly the breed I want!

Here are my furbabies. The one gray one on the left is Kapuchee. He is really fiesty and he loves to play fetch with straws. He is obsessed with straws and sometimes hoards them in closets for safe keeping. He is also a very creepy kitty who lurks and stares at you from dark spots around the apartment lol. He is super tender, and loves to nuzzle (quite aggressively I might add!), and is very shy around people.

The white one on the right is Pesto. He is more laid back and loves to lounge and lay around luxuriously. Especially in the summer, he loves to sunbathe whenever sunshine comes into the apartment. He LOVES attention and loves getting rubbed and pet. He loves people, and is very possessive with his toys when he's playing.

They are both around 2, they turn 3 in May (approximately as we adopted them from a shelter). Kapuchee sleeps next to me in bed, and I think I am his favorite, he always follows me around the place and wants to be near me. Pesto sleeps by FI's feet, FI is his favorite, he follows him around and also wants to always be near him. They are also huge brats who do the naughtiest things, my friend at work who also has a cat, cannot believe the stories I tell her about them lol. But I love them to death!!!!

  • You're all making my puppy fever worse! FI and I are actually almost finished with our first dog adoption! The last step is a home visit by someone from the rescue center, which is happening tomorrow. A rescue employee will come to our house and make sure it's well-suited for a dog (I'm pretty sure it's actually to make sure we're not running a puppy mill or canine torture chamber). Then, pending approval, we get to go pick up the newest member of our family!

She's a one year old Siberian husky/German shepherd mix with a tan and gray coat and gorgeous blue eyes! We're planning on renaming her and have a few names in mind, but want to meet her before we decide :)

Awe! Good luck! The home inspections are pretty easy to pass. I love Siberian huskies, they're on my to get breed. I need a huge huge fence for one though. And my female hates big breeds, sooo it'll be a while before we get one... like when I'm 40 or so. lol My goal is 6 shelties, 2 siberians, 2 aussies, 2 mini schnauzers (what my FI grew up with)

  • I'm loving all this!

I have a Golden Retriever named Loomis (after G. Loomis, the fishing rod company) and my family's had him since he was a puppy. He was born right after Hurricane Charley and when we got him he seemed to be the sweetest ever; all the other puppies in the litter were bouncing and running and being mouthy but he curled up in my moms lap and slept. Well, he was a damned good liar...Loo was a menace as a puppy. Definitely Alpha Male, but we've trained him to be good! He's much more mellow in his older age.

He's completely neurotic about tennis balls...each one must be systematically scalped and then dismembered as soon as he gets it. He also, for some reason, has bad depth perception and so he'll bounce off doors, thinking they're more open than they are...and he'll climb up on your lap so far he's almost on your shoulder! But he's the best, for all that he's insane.

Unfortunately he's the family dog and when I move up to a Florida city close to Georgia where the NFL team is G-d awful to live with my FH (just gotta find a job!) I'll have to leave him at home :(
I'm trying to convince him that we should get a golden, but that's for the future!!! No cats though, ever, I'm severely allergic.
P.S. Sorry if the pics are wonky, I'm on my phone!

  • We are pet free at the moment, and probably will be for a while.  Winston was my hedgie (in my avatar) and we had to put him down last summer.  Our family dog was Dundee, and we put him down about 3 years ago.   :(  I really miss having a dog, but we're not willing to put in the time and effort to have a dog at the moment, so we don't.

  • Can't get photos up now, but the below link is a youtube video FI put up of one of our furbabies- Squirt, my chubbers, (yes we put her on a diet. No, she's not happy about it), my baby cuddle bug who sees me, drops to the floor and turns her head over in a demand for head scratching.

In the video, we'd set up an autofeeder in prep for going away for a few days. Squirty figured out how to bust into it, after acting innocent.

We have one furbaby right now, Henry a Siberian husky/German Shepard cross that we rescued from a shelter and he's almost 10 months old. When his mom was brought into the shelter from up north she had a distended stomach that they thought was due to eating garbage but turned out that she was pregnant.

He was born into the shelter and the foster mom that had him made a facebook page for the litter that she would up regularly with photos and video so we fell in love with him when he was 3 weeks old. We watched him grow and even though it was earlier than we were planning on we knew we had to have him. We weren't able to meet him in person until we went to pick him up so I skyped with his foster mom one day. The next time H and I spoke we determined he really was our dog so I let the shelter know that he was off the market.

He came with the name Henry and originally we had planned on changing it be we had spoken about him so much to our families that they said they refused to call him anything other than Henry so the name stuck.

He's a 90 lb lap dog that just loves attention, being a goof and like me has a love of shoes. He loves the cold and loves with H and I bundle up to take him to the dog park at -45. He also hasn't picked up on most body language from other dogs because he hasn't realized that not every dog wants to play with him, specifically the other three dogs in our extended family that are 15 lbs and under.

We're hoping to start fostering for a shelter sometime this year but probably won't adopt another dog for a bit.

ETA: we were also told he would only reach 55lbs... we're still laughing at that

  • H and I have 3 dogs, two cats, 2 parakeets, and a snake.

Rocky is the only critter who is mine. He is a corgi/heeler mix, and he is my baby. I adopted him from a shelter. He picked me though. His eyes locked on me the second I walked into that room. When I took him out to play, he put his paws on my knees and just looked at me. I took him home. He has terminal cancer and isn't doing so well anymore. We will probably have to put him down before the month is out. He's only 5, so it's especially hard. I'm not doing so well either truth be told.

Captain is our old man. He's aussie mixed with something. He's a doofus. H took him in after his neighbors moved away and left him chained in the backyard. He's a sweetie.

Morgan is a lab pit chow wtf mix. She barks at her own shadow and is terrified of hats. She is daddy's girl. She used to be extremely agoraphobic until Rocky and I moved in. Rocky seems to have brought her out of her shell. We worry about her reaction when Rocky goes.

Fizgig is our cat, also known as Jabba. He's huge. I'm allergic to him. So he loves to sit by my face. He's old and crotchety, but a sweet boy nonetheless. And he can tell time.

Dickens is the child I constantly threaten to throw back into the storm drain from whence he came. Way too friendly for a feral cat, H took him in out of pity. Good thing too, because he is absolutely mentally impaired. He also tears up the furniture. Destroyed my kitchen rugs and my leather coffee table and ottoman, but will not touch his scratching post. This is why I threaten him. But he also looks exactly like Toothless the dragon, so we can't stay mad at him.

Our parakeets are Captain Mal and Kenobi. Mal is a sweetie, with deformed feet. He loves scritchins on his neck. Kenobi is a bossy bitch. She bites.

The snake, Kami, is a corn snake whose existence I tolerate.
  • severmilli12 - love Watson!! Glad to see he is a fan of pillows and tshirts like my Gus ;)
