DIY Invitations!

In order to keep our costs down I am making my wedding invitations (scary right?!). I went to Hobby Lobby on Saturday and bought a textured cream cardstock for the back, smaller 4x6 white cardstock to print invitations/rsvp/reception cards, "wedding" printed paper to line the envelopes with (is cream and tan and says Love, I Do, Always & Forever, etc all over), a corner punch, a paper cutter and some double sided adhesive! All of this cost me roughly $50. Not bad so far. Today I ordered cream colored A7 envelopes (250) and white sealing wax for another $30. I am planning to purchase a wax seal (around $15) still but then I should have everything! All-in-all, I'm spending about $100 (less than $1 per invitation!) to make these myself and I think they will come out really nice! I've been playing around with different styles for the invitation, found a tutorial on lining the envelopes, and am planning to do postcards for the RSVPs. Maybe I'll open an Etsy shop and start doing my own invitations? (forget that, too much work....)

I like to do a lot of DIY but I often will procrastinate so I'm limiting myself to the invitations. The centerpieces are kind of DIY but will be more of a put together the day of as we set them up. Are any of you ladies taking on any DIY projects? Would love to hear about them or even see pictures!

Re: DIY Invitations!

  • I will be doing our centerpiece holders.  They will be mason jars, spray painted silver, then I'll be modpodging (is that even a word?) purple glitter on them.  I'm thinking of picking up a stencil or two so the glitter will be in a design of some kind.  I'm hoping that all that can get done in a weekend, because right now, it is far too cold to be spray painting!!!  I have to wait until spring to do it.  Also, I need to figure out how many I'll need to do because of number of tables and such.  Anyways I'm pretty sure that is the only DIY thing I'll be doing.
Oh wait! I am also in the process of super gluing rhinestones onto my custom converse...still gotta finish that....

  • My only DIY is my centerpieces. We have the option of setting up the reception hall the day before so Ill be doing that and setting up the tables and crap. I as gonna do all he floral stuff but my FI seems to think that if I do the bouts then they will look hillbilly, and not wedding professional.(just an fyi I worked as a florist for about 2 years, not like i dont know how to)So that's kinda pissing me off. So Instead I"ll stick to me and my bm bouquets and the tables

  • oh I forgot - I'm also doing all the flowers! Not by myself - my mom worked in a floral shop for YEARS! We're doing all the bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages, and anywhere else there is going to be flowers! keep forgetting about that one since it's one that has to wait until we're closer to the wedding!
  • I think our only DIY will be the seating chart and place cards. Before we started really planning (heck, even before we got engaged), I had all of these ideas of saving money and DIYing things... and then it never happened haha.

I don't know if it's because we have a short (read: less than a year) engagement or if I just don't have the patience and energy right now because work is busy, but I have no desire to DIY anything right now. I'm also a hardcore perfectionist, so I know that if I don't have all the time in the world to make sure everything is perfect and exactly the same as everything else, I'll drive myself nutters.

  • @pumpkinsandturkeys I know how you feel! We only have a 7 month engagement so everything feels rushed. Part of the reason why I'm limiting myself. I really looked at ordering invitations because its a lot of work (I need 123 altogether!) but the cost was just horrific so I'm biting the bullet and doing it. I typically DIY a lot of invitations anyway - mostly kids bday parties and then do my holiday cards. But I really want these to look amazing! Same with pretty much everything about my wedding!

We spent a fair amount per invite, but justified it because we don't need many at all -- the minimum is 35 and we probably only need 21, so we'll have a lot extra (most other vendors wanted a 50 invite minimum!). The DIY cost probably would have come close to what we're spending, anyway, since we need so few.

  • My DIY is all of the mercury glass we're making for our centerpieces. We're doing combinations of flowers, candles and books for our centerpieces (apparently we own more tan, cream and blue books than I thought!) so mercury glass is being made. We're going for a "I just raided my grandmother's silver cabinet" look. :)

Does anyone else have an Old Time Pottery (idk if it's just local or a chain) because we're getting glasses/votives for like $0.30 a piece, it's awesome! We're using looking glass spray paint, water/vinegar mixture and gold spray paint...our garage has been taken over!!!

But they're turning out great so I'm super excited!

  • I've got a few DIY projects, but the one I'm most excited about (and the one I've been slacking on lately) is the escort cards. I have this vision of them looking like flowers and the green paper leaf has the peoples names & table on it and they are resting on a bed of grass. Luckily my florist loves the idea so we are getting the grass for it and he'll help set it up for me. It took me a while to get the right look: I first used cupcake liners and party streamers from some different Pinterest tutorials I found but they came out so bad! I finally settled on using tissue paper - it takes a lot longer to make, but it's the perfect look of what I had in my head!

  • I decided to take on a bunch of DIY since I really like that kind of thing and I'm also a perfectionist so I don't think anyone else can do it right. LOL Here's my list:

    Save the Dates
    Invitations
    Thank you cards
    Table number holders
    Wine bottle favors
Boxes of chocolates as escort cards
    Centerpiece holders
    Decorations for the sweetheart table
Aisle runner (this one is a maybe)
Bell ringers (instead of clinking glasses for us to kiss)

That's all I can think of right now, but I'm sure that there's more.

  • We are DIY-ing:

    Invites
    Thank You cards
    Wine bottle centerpieces
A bunch of other little decorations around the hall
    Escort cards
    Chocolate box favors
    Programs

    I THINK that's it?
  • I'm diy-ing a lot too & haven't started anything yet. :( Giant paper flower background for ceremony, signage, programs, invites, all the personal flowers & centerpieces, chair decor, escort cards, mercury glass, card box. The most overwhelming are the paper flowers. I need diy fairies to come at night & do them for me! :)
