How did you choose your wedding date?

It's 5 months exactly from my wedding! I'm so excited that in 5 months and one day, I'll wake up as a wife to my wonderful punk rock boy toy.

We chose June 28, because we started dating around that time in 2008, and I'm a teacher so summers off is helpful. He wanted to get married before it gets too hot, and I REFUSED to plan a May wedding. We live in Oklahoma, and May is dangerous. If there's a storm, I won't leave my tornado shelter. Haha, I'm a baby when it comes to tornadoes. He could care less. But, we compromised with June so it won't be as hot as late July, or as scary as any time during May.

I'd love to hear how you picked your big day. Anyone do any of the same number days (07/07/07, 11/11/11)?

Re: How did you choose your wedding date?

  • We initially thought of August, and then I realized that none of my fave flowers were available then (a deal-breaker for me!). So we opted for May (not too hot, not too cold), and checked what the venue had available.

The third Monday in May in Canada is Victoria Day and a stat holiday, which usually falls around May 24 (but not always). As a result, the Victoria Day long weekend is often referred to as "May 2-4 (two-four) weekend", which also kind of refers to the fact that people usually go camping and bring two-fours of beer haha. FI saw that May 24 was a Saturday and was available and yelled, "May 2-4! Yes! I'll always remember that!" I laughed, noted it was not actually the long weekend this year (thankfully, because I didn't want to dominate people's holidays), and told him I was good with that.

  • We're boring. We looked a calendar and scheduled around schools. I'm June 7 (the 28th is my birthday though!). We figured we don't need a "special" date. Our wedding will make it special.

  • We got married March 26.  It fell over my spring break (I teach), and for whatever reason, we weren't keen on Christmas break.  Too close to Christmas I think.  Summer was out, cos we got married in Hawaii and who wants to go to Hawaii in the summer.  Well, I always want to go to Hawaii, but it's better when it's cold.  We were looking at the 27th, which was a Tuesday.  We wanted a couple of days to get there and get everything in order - license, jet lag, etc.  My Dad's birthday is the 25th, so that was out, and we didn't want it at the end of the week.  We finally decided on the 26th since DH's birthday is in March, and mine is on the 26th of the month, so it ended up being a combination of our 2 birthdays and not too late into the week of Spring Break.

We picked July 5th because we wanted the long weekend. FI is a high school and college sports official in addition to his regular job, so fall does not work (I basically don't see him for 3+ months every year because he will be scheduled for at least 1 game every day of the week). He also officiates youth sports on the weekends in the spring, so that was out too (don't judge, he gets paid in cash for all of this). We thought about Memorial Day weekend, but a dear friend of mine is getting married that weekend - leaving us with July 4th weekend. Besides, FI is super patriotic so it will be really hard for him to forget our anniversary. Plus - free fireworks every year around our date!

  • We got married 13 Oct., because 13 is my favourite number and 10 is DH's favourite number, and we wanted a fall wedding. It was a Sunday, so it worked!

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • We picked August 15 cause mid-August is when the garden at my uncle's farm (our venue) is at it's peak.
  • We knew we wanted to get married on the lake in the summer. June was out b/c of my work schedule and August was out b/c my Mom will be out of the country for nearly then whole month. That left July. Didn't want to do it over the holiday weekend, and the next weekend is FI's bday so that was out, and the 4th weekend is anniversary of his Dad's death so that was obviously out. That left the 3rd weekend. Went with a Saturday for ease of travel to BF Montana. Romantic, eh? ;)

  • we chose May 16 next year because it's the may long weekend, and nearly everyone will need to travel, so it works out great for us (and our VIPs) :)
  • Winstonsgirl, I love your picture. I have a hedgehog too.
  • I use to get from late-Aug until start of Oct off because the boat was out of the water.  It was extremely slow at the resort so DH could also take close to a month off.  The venue had Sept 6 and 13th off.  We picked the 6th in order to get a longer honeymoon.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • we wanted June so I was open to any of those weekends.  I had liked early June for it gets crazy hot in July & August and May is already hectic with birthdays & anniversaries as it is. Go figure that on my wedding day is was a record high of 105 that day (it dropped to 100 when my ceremony started at 6pm!).  But all in all the day was perfect.  No connection to June 7th until then. We had liked the idea of the 1st but when I found the venue they had openings for the 7th or 29th, so we went with the 7th.  Plus my birthday is sept. 7th so my husband appreciates how easy it is to remember the 7th.

  • Molly&Domenic - Thanks!!  We had to put Winston down last summer though, as he developed a tumour on his jaw.  I don't think we're getting any more pets for a while.  :(   Post some photos of your hog though!!

  • We wanted spring. I'm a teacher so we did it shortly after Spring Break so I would have that week to do last minute things.

    @WinstonsGirl
No way! The exact same thing happened to me with my first hedgey! Her name was Darby and I lived in denial when her jaw first started to swell. I finally had to make the decision to put her to sleep. I paid a little extra to have her asleep with the gas they use during surgery so that she wouldn't feel the needle. I was heart broken. Now, I have another lovely hedgey girl.
  • We picked May because I love spring and hate cold weather.  We originally planned on April, but I was afraid it might be cool at night or that it might be rainy.  We picked Memorial Day weekend because it worked well for our families to travel and no one really had standing plans.

It rained anyway, but at least it was warm.  It was actually hot enough that my cousins got to swim at the hotel pool the next day.
  • We're getting married in NW Montana and they have a very small window of semi-reliable weather so it had to be between mid-July and mid-August. I'm a weirdo and wanted the date to be an even number and since it's a DW, it had to be a Saturday. That only left like three weeks and one of the dates I preferred (Mick Jagger's birthday!) was already booked. So we were between 8/2 and 8/16 and FI decided the second. Bam. Date - picked.

  • Molly&Domenic Cancerous tumours, especially in the jaw are quite common with hedges.  Within 2 weeks of being diagnosed, it had spread to most of his lower jaw.  He couldn't close his mouth properly while sleeping and he was drooling food out the side of his mouth.  His tumour also abscessed, so it was time.  Really sucked though

  • We knew we wanted to get married in September. Fi's birthday is 9/26 and mine is 9/27. So we chose Saturday 9/27.
  • I love fireworks, so DH suggested we get married on the third of July, with the giant fireworks display...he's awesome like that :)
    ~xoxo~

  • We knew we wanted early fall because in New England summer is too hot and late fall is too cold. We were shooting for Labor Day weekend but got a general consensus from people that they didn't want to "give up" their holiday weekend camping trips and stuff like that. I know you can't please everyone but we said fine screw the holiday. The weekend after my BM is in her brother's wedding so we took the next weekend lol

  • Our anniversary is January 3rd, so we just added a zero to the end and got January 30th *shrug*. I felt January 3rd was too close to the holidays and would be way too stressful. The end of January just seemed a little easier. We picked 2016 because we wanted a LOT of time to plan, save up money, and think about what we wanted.

I've been getting mixed reactions with the date.

  • We knew we wanted to get married in the fall and I felt like October has always been my favorite month and so we just looked at the calendar at all the Saturday's in October and just chose the 18th. And that was that...when we went to book the venue they had it available, but we would have been amenable to any Saturday in October.

  • We chose July 11th because it is our current "anniversary" of when we first started officially dating. I wanted to get married as close to that day as I could, but it's on a Friday.  I was 100% ok with a Friday wedding, but my FI was hesitant.  It turned out that the venue we loved had the 11th open so we went for it!  I was so happy that we ended up getting that day.  FI has since warmed up to it and is happy that we will have the long weekend to celebrate our big day and have more time to spend with our out of town friends and family.
  • I'm not 100% certain because it wouldn't be until 2015, but I'm thinking either October 9th or 10th.  Late september/early october is by far my favorite part of the year- It's cooling down from Summer so it's not hot as balls anymore, but it's not cold just yet, and unlike spring it isn't rainy.  Weather is important because I really want it outdoors.

  • Similar to some PPs I'm a teacher so time off largely influenced the date. We live in Vegas and wanted an outdoor ceremony so winter and summer breaks were out. We picked 3/28/2015 because it's the Saturday my spring break starts so I can avoid taking off several days. Seems so far away but I know it'll be here before I know it! :)

  • We chose May 17th because our first date was on Dec. 17th. and thought it be cute to get married on the same number day. Also, May works out weather wise and family wise.

  • Because FI liked the even numbers for some reason. 8/16/14. LOL. Well, we wanted an outdoor ceremony and indoor reception. Plus, we get a 10% discount for booking in August. We had to choose a date that would work around his work schedule. We can't do end of the month or beginning of the month due to end-of-the-month inventory (his job is a parts manager). He is responsible for it. Two, one of his groomsmen is his co-worker so they both can't be off at the same time so luckily for that day, they have a back up manager to be in charge.
  • We didnt want to get married in the winter because of the snow risk so that scrapped Nov-Mar. I didnt want to be in a wedding dress in the summer so that cut out late June- August. Sept and Oct are full of birthdays and anniversaries in my family so we scratched those off. That left us with April or May. April 24th would have been my grandfathers 90th birthday so we picked the 25th which is a Friday.

  • We originally choose March 1, but after FI father passed away, we moved it back to 9/27. He said he liked a Fall wedding better anyway. I like the Sept. date better, some of my favorite people married in Sept. too.
