XP: Getting Bummed

I am trying to lose weight before my wedding in 6 months. Not much but maybe 5 pounds. I was doing well and I was proud of myself but now I am stuck and I think I have gained a couple pounds back. I am still doing what I did before but no more progress. Help please.

Re: XP: Getting Bummed

  • Make sure you're getting 7.5-8 hours of sleep per night, and taking care of yourself, managing your stress.  When you're doing everything else right, sleep and stress can make a big difference.  I still have a few pounds to lose as well, but after finals ended, I dropped 3 lbs with no diet and I think it was because I started sleeping again.

  • Ditto @JCBride2014 - Sleep and managing stress are pretty important to weight loss. You can also try shaking up your workout routine. Try doing something new at the gym for a week or two.

I always get 8 hours of sleep. I haven't been too stressed lately and if I feel myself getting stressed I take a deep breath and go for a 5 minute walk.

I could try shaking things up a bit. I work in an office and I am the only one in the office on my shift so maybe I can find somethings that I can do while at work as well.

You've probably hit a plateau -- happens to everyone from time to time, especially when you get close to that last 5 - 10 lbs. What works for me is varying my workout routine, upping my intake of water (and green tea for a caffeine boost), and also switching up my caloric intake -- I'll have a high(er) calorie day or two, and then switch to a lower-calorie regimen for a few days, back to higher cal, etc. Ditto for fat and carbs. It keeps your body guessing so your metabolism is always working at its optimum, rather than getting lazy because it knows what to expect from your normal diet. (ETF autocorrect spelling mistakes)

  • I remember seeing office exercises online before, but I can't find the exact article.  This one is similar:

FI and I are trying to drop some pounds, but we're doing Insanity again.  Also I have an on/off relationship with My Fitness Pal.

  • Make sure you're drinking lots of water.
Change up your workout. Try doing intervals.
  • Make sure you're eating enough. It sounds counter-intuitive, but if you eat too few calories, your body thinks it's starving and your metabolism slows down. I found SparkPeople to be a very useful website for tracking exercise and eating, and making sure that your calories in and calories out are right.
  • I started Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred about a week and a half ago (also paired with healthy eating) and have already lost like 3 pounds.

  • It is pretty normal to plateau. It is a lot easier to lose the first 20 or so than the last 5. Don't beat yourself up about it :)

Ditto PPs, drink water, eat lots of healthy food and just take it one day at a time.

  • The closer you get to your target weight, the harder it is to shed those last few pounds.  You might need to step up your diet and exercise routine a little bit.
Also, how have you been eating?  Sometimes people have a hard time losing weight because they cut too many calories out of their diet and that causes their bodies to go into "Starvation mode" and cling onto every bit of fat they have on them.  Don't cut carbs out of your diet completely, because they are necessary to processing protein, but try to cut down on them/eat good carbs (Flour is crap but oats are great, for instance) and eat lots of protein- muscle tissue is what burns fat, so if you focus on building muscle you'll burn more fat.  And make sure you are definitely eating enough calories every day, you don't want to over eat but you do not want to starve yourself either.  Eat enough protein and work your muscles enough to build muscle tissue and you'll start noticing better results.
And don't worry about getting "Too bulky," a lot of girls think if they pick up a weight they'll get super buff, but in actuality the images you see of girls who are really ripped/bulky are due to years of hard work and dedication, because it's a lot harder for women to achieve that than it is for men.

  • I did the Body by Vi challenge 3 months prior to the wedding (90 day challenge) I worked out for 30 min a day 4-5 days a week and had a shake for breakfast & dinner with a good lunch and healthy snacks throughout the day (Monday and Friday was always an "off day" and if the week was busy I did not feel bad if I missed a day). I never cut out foods I really liked either, just ate them in moderation.  The shakes were actually really good too!  I lost 8 lbs which was perfect. I know if I did it daily and was more conscious of what I ate I could have lost more but the intention was to mostly just tone up, which I did so losing the 8 lbs was a bonus. Too bad I gained it back since then, lol but I think I am going to do the shakes again because they were good and I loved the energy I had while being on the challenge.

  • I always gain weight right after I lose it at first. It took me a while (and a trainer friend) to realize that it's because I built muscle, which tips the scales. Try measuring yourself in key areas to see if your size changes. I did that and it made me feel much better than the scale did.
  • PPs have great suggestions! Adding to what Molly said, I worked with a trainer for a while and he measured more than just what I weighed. One week I only lost 2 lbs according to the scale. But in reality, I had lost 5 lbs of fat and gained three pounds of muscle. So don't just rely on the scale!
  • Hang in there! I ditto PPs about sleep, stress, plateau, etc. Can you drink green tea? Green tea is supposed to be excellent for weight loss and boosting your metabolism. You can even find them in supplement form if tea isn't your thing.
