I have been banned from my own kitchen

FI is in there starting stuff for our Super Bowl tomorrow and has told me to stay out of his way. I smell the stuff he is cooking and it is making me really hungry but everytime I go in there he tells me to get out. I'm thinking about going out to lunch without him.

Re: I have been banned from my own kitchen

  • Poor @jdluvr06! Although, I can't lie, FI is also banned from my kitchen when I am in there. He can only come in if he lets me know he's coming in first or I ask him to come in. I'm a bit of a Tasmanian Devil when I'm cooking, and he is not nearly graceful enough to not walk directly in my path when I'm moving very hot or sharp things around.

  • Awe.   I would just go without him.

We only have 1 car and for some reason I told DH I didn't need it and he could take it to work.   An hour later I'm like "damn it, I wanted to start prepping for tomorrow and I need to go to the store".    Oh and I have a really strong craving for a cheeseburger I could really satisfy.      So mad at myself.

I'm hoping he gets off at decent hour so I can hit up the stores.  Well, actually I have to go tonight regardless to get the alcohol.   Stupid IN and their blue laws prevents me from going tomorrow.

Ugh!  CT recently repealed some of the blue laws relating to liquor sales.  We can now buy alcohol on Sundays, although it's still limited hours.  When I first started coming down here to visit FI (then BF), the blue laws were still in effect.  We both had Sundays off, so I would try to make a nice meal and it took a few weeks of frustration to actually remember that I couldn't buy booze on Sunday.

@lyndausvi - what are the blue laws there?  Here in MI you can't buy alcohol prior to noon on Saturday (I forget what time you have to quit buying prior to that in places like Meijer).  If I am going to be a regular visitor to your neck of the woods soon I'd better start learning the customs.
  • You can only get alcohol at bars and restaurants on Sundays.  So stupid.   I'm not aware of a start time limit.  Mom and I had mimosa at Easter Brunch (10am) so I'm guessing there are none.

Supermarkets are trying to fight to have the law repealed.   Mom and Pop liquors stores are fighting it because they would have to now be open on Sundays.

St Thomas you could buy alcohol 24hours a day/364 days a year.  On Good Friday you could not buy alcohol ANYWHERE, that includes bars and restaurants, between the hours of 9am and 4pm.

    New Orleans 24/7/365.

Quite a shock moving here. We moved in on SuperBowl weekend last year.   We had to do the mad rush to the store late Saturday so we could be prepared for the game.

  • Met my sister for lunch at our fave Mexican place and has a margarita. Yum. FI still doing stuff in kitchen. Lol.
  • Yeah, the IN blue laws are dumb. The first couple years I lived here, I could really only do my grocery shopping on Sunday. And as a first year teacher, there were times when I NEEDED a glass of wine. My family still loves to laugh about how I tried to buy wine on Sunday the first time without knowing any better...

@amakayeb - ever been to a brewery with a bar attached at 6pm on a Sunday?  Hilarious.   There is a line of people (mostly guys) with armful of jubs getting refills so they are set for the night.  First time I saw it was I was like what that about.  I mean these lines are out the door.

  • PA has some state stores that are open Sunday, but only for wine/liquor. Beer is sold at beer stores and they're never open on Sunday.

We can buy alcohol in some grocery stores, but only beer, and then it has to be rung up separately.

On Sunday, you can buy six packs for take-away in bars, limit two.

    Welcome to my crazy.

  • I'm from PA/DE boarder.  I remember those days.  Although back then the ABC stores were not open at all on Sundays.    We would just run down to DE for alcohol and it was TAX FREE.   Course it's illegal if you were caught.

  • Yeah the In blue laws are really stupid. They have a form of them in KY. You can't buy alcohol before noon on Sundays.
  • FI and I went out for breakfast and I ordered a mimosa, but they couldn't serve it until 10 or 11.  I was super annoyed. (I'm in CT)

  • I grew up in IA, which had no liquor laws at all - beer, wine, booze; could buy it anywhere and at any time. It was a shock moving to NC with ABC stores and can't buy anything on Sundays law. CO isn't so bad now - liquor/wine stores open 7 days a week, but grocery stores only sell 3.2 beer (random).

  • Awe, sorry OP. FI and I were discussing watching the super bowl today. I asked if he wants any nibbles. He said no. Fine- tomorrow will be an oven roast with microwaved veggies in a bag, plus fresh green beans and booze. Please show this post to your FI to enjoy his face as he cringes in horror at the thought of freezer-to-microwave veggies :-D
  • Whoa... No alcohol on Sundays?? Places like that exist?! :|

While Ontario has one of the most restrictive liquor control boards and regulations in the world, I'd never heard of laws like this still in existence in recent years. I thought that fell out when they started opening retail stores on Sundays... (Don't even tell me that there are still places that won't let me shop on Sunday).

I probably sound supremely ignorant right now, but despite having travelled throughout the US, I either never came across this or just never noticed.

  • I live in a semi-dry town. Restaurants are BYOB and we have 2 liquor stores in town. And they can't sell before 12:30pm on Sundays. It never seemed abnormal to me since I moved here before I was old enough to drink anyway, but my parents were so confused when they couldn't order wine the first time we went out to dinner!

  • So, when I was a kid, the law was that no alcohol could be bought/sold after 1pm (I think, maybe 3pm) on Saturday, and not at all on Sunday. That was the law through the whole country. Then it changed in some of the provinces that alcohol could be sold all weekend, at the discretion of the store owners - so some places stayed open on Sundays, others didn't. However, in the province where I grew up, the law didn't change and it's still illegal to sell alcohol on Sundays.

We moved from that province to one of the "Sunday selling" provinces when I was in high school, but my little brother was still in junior school. So he grew up with alcohol being available on Sundays.

Then when he was in college, he went to a national orchestra thing that was held in the province where I grew up. He had a morning session on the Sunday but the rest of the day free, after a week of doing 3 - 4 sessions a day. So he was wondering around the town looking for a bottle of wine, eventually he asked some locals, and they were like "It's Sunday, dude" and looked at him like he was some kind of alien. It was very funny.

NC'er here too.  I cannot tell you the number of times I've gone grocery shopping on Sunday morning, thrown beer or cider in the cart and gone to the check out only to be told it's not noon yet.  There have been times when I've contemplated doing laps around the store to avoid having to make another trip.  One day I'll remember.
