  • @jenna8984

I have never heard of that movie. What's it about?
  • @hlvonb It's Tom Hanks from 2013. The true story of a US ship captain taken hostage by Somali pirates.

  • That movie was amazing!!! FI wanted to watch it and I had no interest- so glad I caved. I think Tom Hanks should have been nominated for an Oscar for his performance

  • Heard the movie was good but the real Captain Phillips is kind of a jerk.  I absolutely LOVE Tom Hanks, though.  We will probably rent it soon, or watch it if it comes on HBO Go.

  • Such an amazing movie! I was on edge the whole time!
  • I haven't seen it. IDK if I want to- my dad was a captain and I'm glad he switched to being a river bar pilot for that and many other reasons. Maybe it's just more coverage but it seems like pirates are getting to be a bigger and bigger problem. It does look really good, just hits a little close to home.

  • Ooo I've wanted to see that. Good to know it's decent. I'll give it a rent! Thanks!
  • I'm obviously in the minority here as I just didn't love it (hanging head in shame). FI really liked it, but I feel asleep :/ I swear I don't have an ice heart, and I loooooove a good tear jerker, but for some reason this one just didn't do it for me. Love me some Tom Hanks, though!

  • I'm with @Niccirf. Not a big fan of this one.
  • @niccirf its not my normal type of movie (I love comedy) but knowing that it was a true story is what made it so intense for me.

  • We loved it too!  I am surprised Tom Hanks did not get nominated.

  • @fiancb Yea that must have been scary for your family, I'm glad he switched jobs. I honestly had no idea...as the pirates are approaching with their guns I said "what's the big deal, we have guns too right?" and FI explained how NO, if you're not a military vessel you're not allowed to have weapons. I did not know that!!

  • I really liked the movie. But it isnt horribly accurate. Many people who were part of the crew said the ship was sailing in Somilaian waters to save time/ money, so putting the ship adn its crew at risk. And that the Capt didnt make a huge effort to protect his crew, like he did in the movie.

@katwag Aaaw that is kind of sad to hear! But you have to give it to the lead, skinny Somalian man....I read that he was literally a cab driver and they just plucked him and said you look good, can you act? And he did amazing and was nominated for awards. It's pretty crazy that someone with no experience can be the 2nd lead in a major blockbuster like that and be so believeable.
