One of my kickass bridesmaids is leaving for the Appalachian Trail in 3 weeks.  She's taking a leave of absence from her engineering job and she's going to hike the trail by herself.  I'm so jealous but so excited for her.  I wanna take off on a 5 month long hike!

UPDATE: Sorry to bring back a zombie post, but I wanted to tell everyone that my friend completed the Appalachian Trail yesterday!  Exactly 5 months and over 2,000 miles later, she made it to Mount Katahdin!  I am SO PSYCHED to see her and catch up about the trip. I've only seen her once since she left when we happened to be in Virginia at the same time.

And that's awesome! I hope I can do something similar eventually. I'm perpetually taunted by the Rockies.

When I first saw the heading for this thread, I thought it was Broke Ass... ie: a bridesmaid who can't pay for anything. Then I opened it and was more than a little relieved that someone wasn't calling one of their bridesmaids a broke ass haha

    ooh. i like that "BAMF".
  • @PDKH - If you don't mind me asking, what state are you in?  We almost booked Colorado for our honeymoon but chickened out over the possibility of altitude sickness. Seeing the Rockies and climbing in Colorado are definitely items on my bucket list.
  • @pumpkinsandturkeys - Haha I've never heard BAMF used for broke ass, but I could see how you'd think that with all the usual bridesmaid complaints around here.. It's out of control.
  • Omg I love it, @ShesSoCold! She did tell me that she was going to try not to shower from Georgia until Maryland. More power to her.

I've been friends with her since we were 7 years old and she used to be such a girly girl.  I love her transformation into confident, does whatever the hell she wants adult.

I'm a MO native, but I am currently wrapping up grad school in Denver so I've been in CO for a while.

Altitude sickness is tricky and really varies by person to person. I've never had an issue with it though. Usually, if they keep a little food in their stomach and guzzle water like it's their job, most people are fine. There's great climbing in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park that's not crazy high, but will offer you some amazing views. They also have tons of really nice but not crazy expensive cabins and resorts out there (especially if you go in the off season).

If you're nervous about altitude sickness, you can always try out some of the smaller peaks and see how you do before you tackle some 14ers or skiing/snowboarding.

ETA: Boulder Flatirons are another great option!

Excellent advise by @PDKH. I've been in Denver for 13 years and never had an issue with altitude sickness when venturing to the hills, but FI get's it pretty bad and my step Dad gets super sick when he visits. It also helps to aclimate slowly (e.g. spend a day in Denver, then move up a little higher to Evergreen perhaps, then move up to the higher towns).

@kns1988 - your BM is a BAMF! I hear the Appalachians BIG, and her stories are going to be amazing!!

  • FI hiked 55 miles of it when he was in Boy Scouts. He thinks it's awesome your bridesmaid is doing this.

  • That is so awesome! FI and I hiked 78 miles of the trail a few years ago. There is no way either of us could take enough time off to do the whole trail.
  • I used to live in New Mexico, and have visited there and Colorado several times in my life. Never had an issue with altitude sickness until we went to NM for our first anniversary last year. I was sick almost all week. You can't really tell when it will strike. To be fair, I was probably sick longer than I would have been if I hadn't tried hiking on day 2.
  • Fi suggests your BM should meet Sasquatch and bring him as her date to your wedding.
