married abroad.. how to get a new SS card?

its impossible to figure out how to get a new SS card with my new name because my marriage certificate is in Thai. I know the marriage is recognized by the US, but can't figure out how to get the docs to change my name.

Has anyone successfully changed her name using a marriage certificate issued by a foreign country in a foreign language, without doing a courthouse marriage just to get an English marriage certificate?
.
THANKS!

did you contact the social security office in your city to ask for the requirements?
  • You will probably need to have your marriage certificate translated by a certified translator.  You will need to pay for this, it's usually priced per word, so hopefully your certificate isn't too wordy.  If you google "Certified Thai Translator" you will get lots of companies to choose from.  Just make sure they are accepted by Federal Courts, as that is sort of a universal credential in the US.

But before you pay for the translation, call Social Security to ask.

  • The American Embassy in Thailand might also be able to help you sort out the requirements and find a translator.
