Morning!

Re: Morning!

  • TK is being wonky on me.  Cfas, do you get facials often?  I think I want to treat myself to one for my birthday, but I've never had one and have absolutely no idea where to go in NoVa.  Any recommendations?

[QUOTE] Also, full disclosure, I went out for a happy hour last night for a friend's birthday, got home late and I swear I'm still a little drunk this morning (note: I didn't drive to work!). I have a feeling it's going to be a looong day.

It's an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, but gender flipped and in a matriarchal society. It involves a lot of badass women in corsets and the fights are done with knives. H and a friend wrote it (it's still Shakespearean) and he directed it.

Thanks everyone! I'll post the review if it's good. If it's not... I'll think about posting it :P

My little sister (16) just got her drivers license and now I think all the time about how dangerous driving is, especially for a teenager. We have all made her swear that she will never text while driving, but I get how powerful of an urge that can be. Even if she is a safe driver, horrible things can still happen. Ugh, I feel sick thinking about it.

It would certainly stave off the hangover I see looming in my future!

I think I'm getting too old for this ish.

  • I would think a matriarchal society would outlaw corsets.  Those things aren't exactly comfortable.

  • Hey Rach, what is the party for your SFIL going to be like? My mom turns 50 this October and I feel like I need to plan something for her, but I have no idea where to even start. If anyone else has suggestions for a parent's b-day party I'll take them!

Her birthday is on Halloween so I thought about helping her plan a big Halloween/birthday party. I don't want her to plan her own party, but I know she likes doing stuff for Halloween so I don't want to interfere with her plans. Also, my sister is due Oct 24th so I'm thinking earlier in October would be more ideal.

HA!! I think this every night! We should all be wearing yoga pants!
My rational is the corsets kind of work like armor against the knives.
  • Nat-I'm actually reading a book right now about a matriarchal society.  I'm to the point in the book where the men are now starting a movement for equality.  Your show sounds really interesting and I hope you get good reviews!

That sounds interesting! Is this in a professional setting or a community setting? (I majored in theatre, so I'm just curious.) :)

Is she responsible by nature? There's an app that won't let you text when the car is in motion. If she's responsible, maybe encourage her to get it? It sounds lame, but better safe than sorry.
  • Hey everyone!

Every Friday we go out with or over to my MIL's for a late lunch/early dinner.  This week she wanted us to go to her house for take out...except she doesn't have AC.  I suggested she come here instead and I would grill some burgers.

WTH was I thinking....we have a charcoal grill on a small 2nd floor deck and it is going to be in the 90s.  I might melt today everyone!
  • One of our supervisors is being a pompous ass. It's normal for him, he's now coming over here to make me do something. That will not go well.
    image
  • Hmm, wine and cheese... my mom likes both. That would be a fun, easy, low key way to celebrate. Yes, definitely let me know any awesome details.

Arag- This critic is usually pretty quick with a blog entry/rambling review of the show. Hopefully that will be up online today. He writes for a local weekly paper, so if we get a printed review it would be next week.

Gurrl- what book? The men kind of rebell in this show. Women marry other women in this society, and the end wraps it up with pointing out how you can't choose with whom you fall in love, since Juliet and Romeo fall in love, despite being man and woman.

I'll bring up that app! She is generally a pretty good and responsible kid, but she's also the type to think "Oh, just this one time."

The theater is definitely more community than professional. We like to call it semi-pro. If the show makes enough money (and H makes his investment back) all the actors get paid. But I think it's  a step above community theater. Not that there's anything wrong with community theater!
  • That's fun.

I miss being on stage. I LOVE being a theatre teacher, but I miss the stage too.
  • Happy Friday! Good thing I work from home, because I overslept this morning. My alarm went off, I promptly turned it off, and rolled back over. Next thing I knew it was 9:04 (I'm supposed to be punched in by 9) so I jumped out of bed and ran to punch in. Now I am trying to actually wake up and get the day started. So I'm off to read the rest of the thread.

  • Good morning, ladies!  I overslept, which I hate doing when I have something to do. So this is a P&R.

I will catch up later on the afternoon threads.

I wonder if we will get any interesting MUD or Trolling since it's Friday the 13th.

It's called The Underground by Ilana Kat Katz.  Here's the review from Amazon, which pretty much sums it up:
The story is set in the backdrop of the futuristic dystopian America run by an iron-fisted Queen. Under the guise of ending sexual assaults against women, she requires unmarried twenty-six-year old men to be castrated. To further diminish men’s rights, women are the only ones who can legally propose marriage.

When the Queen’s rebellious daughter, Shayla, falls for a commoner, the Queen refuses to condone the marriage. Shayla’s lover, Nathaniel, is left with unsavory options. Everything changes once he is kidnapped into The Underground, a secret renegade organization on a mission to overthrow the extremist regime. They train Nathaniel to infiltrate high society. Once released, he is commanded to commit a violent act that could restore equality for men; an act that would kill any chances for a life with Shayla. Will he save his gender from another generation of abuse or follow his heart?

I say you buy some already made burgers from a restaurant and pass them off as your own.  Throw a little bit of water on your face like you sweated over a hot grill, then you get all the brownie points for the work but not do any of the actual work.

Morning all!  I'm not gonna, I'm dragging today a bit because of the whole bottle of wine I put  down my gullet last night.  Plus, I got home a little late and woke up at 3am with a headache so had to get up and take some aspirin.  The good news is that I'm going to a happy hour tonight and will get a little hair of the dog treatment going.

[QUOTE]I miss performing SO BAD. I haven't performed or sang in over 3 years.  That makes me sad.

I do get to sing at church regularly. If I didn't have that, I'd probably go nuts. I love performing, times infinity.

That sounds very similar to some of the themes in my play! I'm going to recommend it to H. Maybe we'll buy it for our Kindles. It's only $2.99!
  • It's actually one of the better dystopian books that I have read.  It's better written than most and I find the premise interesting.  What that description doesn't say is that the men are also basically slaves.  The women tell them what to do and they do it.
  • Good morning!
I have literally nothing to add to this conversation but wanted to say hello anyway.
  • Gur, I just added that to my lengthy list of books to read. Sounds really good.

I miss playing my flute too and it's only been since last Easter (I think) at church. Choir director promises we're having an orchestra for Christmas this year though so I'm excited. I have a goal to work up enough courage to take a singing solo once choir starts back up too. They've been trying to get me to forever.

  • Midge, I have so many on my to read list.  I've stopped keeping up with my GoodReads, because it was getting too long.  I read all the time though, so I'm getting through them at a pretty good clip.

[QUOTE]I cannot sing. Or dance. I was joking around last night that I had "I Saw the Sign" by Ace of Base stuck in my head and H died laughing because apparently I made it sound British. Woops.

  • Rach wins 1000 cool points for singing Ace of Base.
  • I can't sing to save my life.  I seriously sound like a cat being tortured.  The only time I do sing is with the radio all the way up in my car (and I'm alone).  I don't even want to hear myself sing.

    I can dance however.
  • I can't sing or dance, either.  Unless I'm drunk.  Then I think I'm the best singer and dancer EVER.  Poor H.  He tries to drown me out with the radio sometimes, but then I just sing louder.

  • I sing pretty much everywhere I go.

I wouldn't be able to remember all of the good recs I've gotten without GoodReads. I'm almost finished with HP so I'll get to jump into other stuff very soon. I'm enjoying my HP time a lot but I'll be glad to be able to read different stuff too.
