NWR - Major Vent

I have a great job - I love my job and I love my coworkers, for the most part.   What I don't like, is one coworker (who otherwise is an ok person) who consistently complains they have no money, brings nothing in for lunch, and stalks (yes, stalks) people until they feel bad (or get creeped out enough) to either give him some of their lunch or money to get food.    He never even tries to bring food.   He complains that he has no money (he just bought a jeep way bigger then my rusted squealing car), moved, and works more overtime and gets paid more than I do.   No dude, you don't have a 'no money' problem, you have a 'money management' problem.

I'm sorry, I'm not a very sympathetic person unless I think you deserve it and this poor-me junk is just not flying and is really bugging me today (especially after we all got paid today and someone else still took HIM out for lunch).  He's a leech.   And seriously, what does he spend his money on?  Video games, lots of them!  Crap he doesn't need!   And then after lunch he comes in and is like I think it'll be pb and jelly lunches next week, boo-hoo me.   I was like 'I freaking lived on that through college'.  It's ramen noodles, pb&J, pasta and water from the tap for months!   You don't have money for food but you just bought a new game station?   STOP!!! Stop complaining, stop spending your money uselessly!  You get paid overtime which equates to my weekly pay.   GRRRRRR!!!!!

(Sorry I had to let that out somewhere.)

Re: NWR - Major Vent

  • Keep some extra food for him in your desk, so you can offer it when he asks again.  I suggest a couple cans of Spam and nothing else.  :D

  • Pickled pigs feet, anchovies, a can of tuna, dried wasabi peas...
  • Funny you posted this. I've been getting seriously irked by two people who constantly complain about being in so much debt and having so much money.

One just got a new job and got her eyebrows waxed & a manicure the week before she started. The other one just bought an $100 winter coat and insisted on purchasing a new scarf and gloves to match.

Sigh. I have no sympathy for either of them. I saw this video once [link] and think of every time I hear them whine.

I second @WinstonsGirl on this one!

  • Uuuugh yes! There's a man at FI's work who makes such a big deal any time we go on vacation he's always on FI's ass like "must be nice that you can afford that" and FI snapped one day and screamed at him "you could too if you didn't go to the bar every night you fucking drunk!"

We ALWAYS pack a lunch and FI works with other mechanics and truck drivers so not exactly suit & tie people. Whenever I send him with leftover salmon or anything that's not Ramen for that matter, they are always like "oh mr. fancy lunch, you can afford salmon". FI is like dude it was $7.99/lb at the grocery store- it doesn't cost any more than that Big Mac meal that you're eating!

THIS!!!!   This guys always goes out to lunch (when he's not begging).   I want to shout at him 'The money you wasted on your lunches this week, I spent on my groceries for the week, FOR TWO PEOPLE!!!!'   I mean really, it's not that hard to make a sandwich and pack a lunch, he  obviously knows how to (if he was complaining about resorting to pb&j sandwiches).
  • I have a coworker who makes $80k a year and is ALWAYS bitching about being broke. Granted, we live in NYC where the cost of living is higher than most places, but 80 grand is A LOT of money.

But here is the kicker, he smokes a pack a day. So I told him he should quit smoking, or at least cut back. When I pointed out that is smoking habit alone costs him over 5 grand a year (cigarettes are super expensive here) he was shocked.

It annoys me when people don't know how to manage themselves and then just complain all the time.

I spent $16 last Sunday at the grocery store. It bought me lunch and snacks every single day this week. I don't understand why people don't see that!

  • I had a coworker who ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner from the communal fridge. The food budget didn't account for leeches like him so their was never enough food. It later surfaced that he was taking home food too! He was single and made more than me, yet was always on the brink of poverty if you asked him.

FI also recently gave his ex wife 20 bucks because she wa broke and starving and had his son for the day. When we picked the kiddo up he was starving she spent $15 at coldstone as bought a pack of cigarettes.

  • I feel ya! I work with a LOT of kids right out of college. They still live at home, go out all the time, and eat breakfast, lunch and afternoon starbucks out of our caf. I wish I could blow money like that.
  • Thats ok. I got laid off today because of lack of work to keep me..and the girl they laid off lives rent free with her parents, her student loans are paid off..and has no bills...... but they laid me off....the one with bills and a wedding to save for.... who actually CARES about the company.... love it...thankfully I have a job interview Monday.

  • Lol, reminds me of people who's always complaining that they're broke but always buying new clothes for the next weekend's parties..

And I like to go away for long weekends and people like it must be nice...um, I'm pretty cheap, I get cheap hotels or go camping. Money management, hello.

@smalfrie19, that really sucks. I'm sorry, I hope the interview goes well!
