What are you doing for Valentine's Day?

Tell me about your Valentine's Day plans!

H and I will probably go out for dinner. He has it off so that's good!  (H works a night shift four days a week.) I'm planning to get him a card and I'm still thinking about a small gift to get him. Sometimes I bake him a goodie of some sort and write him a letter. We'll see what happens. I'm debating getting some new lingerie, but I just got some new stuff a couple months ago (he's seen it all already), so I'm hesitant to spend the money.

Re: What are you doing for Valentine's Day?

  • Our wedding is about 80 days out and we still have some things to pay for, so we're doing a movie and dinner out using gift cards we got for Christmas.

  • I'll be making gnocchi bolognese, and baked chocolate pudding. I might make apple pie ice cream, but I haven't decided about that yet. FI will probably bring home some sparkling wine or something. And then we'll probably have a Doctor Who marathon, or maybe just sleep.

  • I am working nights in one province, FI is working days in another province :( We'll be lucky if we see each other in the next month or so. However, we've not spent Valentine's Day together yet, so that's not a change!

    Send some here please, thanks!

We decided on no gifts for each other until wedding - but I found a big window picture frame thing at pier 1 that I want to get for us with pictures in it and we can hang it somewhere. And I will make dinner and we will relax! Like any other Friday, haha
  • @Lovesclimbing my fiancé also works 4 night shifts and has Valentine's Day off. I am a teacher and happen to have it off because of parent/teacher conferences.

We are going out to dinner and then to a burlesque show. We went to one on New Years Eve by the same group, and it was fantastic. (I hate when girls say they do burlesque for attention, but then put on a lame show. Go big or go home.)

I gave my sweetie his Valentine's Day gift early. I bought some light blocking curtains so he can sleep during the day and it will still be dark.
  • Friday night we're just staying in, cooking and drinking wine. Saturday we're driving to my mom and dad's and then we're all going out to dinner at a fancy restaurant.
  • If FI can get the time off, we might go out for a nice lunch that day. I have to go in to work that afternoon. We will probably just do something nice on Thursday. We have a ton of special occasions crammed into this week.

My birthday is today. Our anniversary if Thursday. And then Valentines of course. (Plus we have a good 10-15 family birthdays this month.)
  • I got him a card and am making a fancy dinner (oysters Rockefeller, stout-braised short ribs, salted caramel cream puffs). Then we'll probably sit on the couch and drink too much.
  • I have no idea what we are doing for Valentine's day, left it up to FI. I am definitely going to surprise him with cards and candy as I usually do.

What I do know is I'm getting sick of people talking about how much they hate it.  One of my friends pretty much mentions how she hates Valentine's day every time I see her lately. She is constantly asking what my plans are and it's making me feel a bit like this: http://theoatmeal.com/blog/valentines_day
  • FI just made the connection last night that Friday was the 14th and Valentines Day (despite claiming to have gotten me something last week). We discussed going out, but have decided against it. He knows what he's getting (got an amazing deal on a charcoal grill for him) so we've decided to get some really good cuts of steak and grill out Friday night and Saturday and have fresh veggies with both.

He's also promised to have his vows written by the 14th.

I have never been a fan of Valentine's Day.  Sure I would like the day to be recognized, but not in the typical way.  If you go out to dinner, the restaurant scene is jam-packed. The service tends to be really slow, and most times, your favorite restaurant has a different menu on Valentines Day.  Secondly, flowers.  I HATE Valentine's Day flowers.  Whenever I egt flowers for Valentine's Day, it is always a sad bouquet and will usually die in a day.  I LOVE fresh flowers, but they are so expensive.  I think it makes more sense to get flowers when they are cheaper and will last longer. Besides, I think flowers have more significance when they are given off occasion.  When you are spending $60-80 on something that will die, why not spend that on a thoughtful gift, and get your girl some beautiful fresh cut flowers a couple weeks later for $15 or less.  But I have to say, out of all the things FI has ever given me, usually I love the cards the most.
  • DH is booking dinner somewhere.  Not sure what else, but we don't really go all out for it

  • We are Skyping since that's all we can do until the wedding (48 days!).  I'm making lemon bars and putting them in the mail today. We got engaged the day after Valentine's day last year so I think that day will always be more special than Vday.

I hope you guys have a great time!
  • We're going to BIL's wedding during the day, then having dinner with friends that night. We don't do a lot for V-Day, because it's not really a big holiday, but it is our first one married, so that's nice.

I bought him a Chelsea FC scarf and will get him a card.

We don't normally do anything and then go out on a different day to avoid crowds, but since it's a weekend day this year, we're going to the local event center that's putting on a Valentine's Day dinner. It's like $33/pp for a fancy multi course meal, with a band, before a hockey game.

It should be pretty fun and as a bonus we were considering having our reception there so it's a good chance to see how good the food and service is when they're busy, vs a tasting where they'd go all out and kiss our asses to get us to book.

  • Im making crab cakes with mango salsa, steaks with garlic smashed potatoes and asparagus, and chocolate covered strawberries for dessert. Then we'll probably just watch tv. We are boring.
  • No idea we haven't discussed doing anything yet.  We said no gifts this year only cards and I switched to a new job so he doesn't know the address to deliver anything.  Although I did give him a new pair of boots for the winter, (they were from my dad's store so they were free really) .  It would be nice to go out to dinner though but we'll see.

  • I'm jealous! I will be apart from my DH. I have to get up for work at 2:30am on Saturday and I am TDY two hours from home. So, I bought my DH a card and small gift and marked it "don't open until 2/14." So, this year, it's going to be the thought that counts.

  • We took the day off (since it is a holiday weekend. We also took the following Monday off), therefore we are definitely sleeping in! We have dinner reservations for a steakhouse near our place, but we haven't decided what to do beforehand. I'm thinking maybe going somewhere nice for a couple of cocktails before dinner, but we still have to decide.

  • We're not celebrating on Friday - BF has long-standing plans every Friday with a tabletop gaming group, and very few of them have romantic partners. The other one that does games with his GF. Instead, we're celebrating Saturday, and I've already told him we're not exchanging any gifts this year. He asked me to leave Valentine's Day planning in his hands, so I don't know what we're doing yet.
  • We've never been huge Valentines day people but I'm really looking forward to this one; we're going to order in a pizza and have a House of Cards marathon! Cant wait!
  • Frozen fish sticks (my request) and I bought a Do You Know Your Bride and Do You Know Your Groom quiz books for us that should be fun.

I tend to prefer very low key Vday celebrations.
  • We'll be going to dinner... hopefully a repeat of our date when FI officially asked me to go steady. The restaurant isn't taking reservations on V Day though, so we'll have a back up at a local alternative just in case. Then we'll finish the night up at a cool beach-side lounge. I'm looking forward to getting gussied up - with all the snow we've been having on the east coast, I've been living in pajamas for what feels like weeks!
  • FI and I will be in Disneyland. We have reservations for the Blue Bayou, but we probably will skip out to do more rides. :]

It's pretty overrated IMO. The portions are small and expensive and not very flavorful. It was a nice atmosphere though, and I'm happy that I've eaten there once in my life! But I wouldn't go again.

Corn dogs and Dole Whip from now on!
  • We are going to a fancy schmancy Italian restaurant on the 13th for Valentine's Day that way we can hopefully beat the Valentine's Day crowd.  On Valentine's Day, we plan on staying in, renting movies, and drinking lots of wine by the fireplace ;);) I cannot wait.

  • FI and I are planning on staying in Friday night to avoid the super crowded restaurants. I'm sure I'll get flowers and I hinted last night that I want ALL the chocolate so I'll probably get some of that and a bottle of wine. We're planning on doing a nice dinner that Sunday since we both have Monday off and hopefully it won't be as busy.
  • Chances are, it will be a lot like any other Friday night: Fi will get home from work around 4, dick around on the computer before passing out in front of the tv just before I walk in the door at 6. I'll most likely make dinner while he's napping (I have some short ribs and Guinness that need to be gone from my kitchen), then it'll be my turn to sleep on the couch once dinner is done. If we can manage to stay up past 10 o'clock, it will be a miracle!

  • We're going to a party. We're going to be playing some games and probably drinking too much. Lol. I bought a few little things for after the party but if we get to that depends on how much we drink.
  • We usually splurge on a meal we cook together.

Valentine's Day has never been a big deal for us. We love each other 364 other days of the year, too :)

  • I'm sad. This is our first Valentine's Day apart (our second year long distance, but last year I was able to visit). I'm sending him a couple pounds of candy and some movies (Skyfall and Expendables II, because I got him Expendables I last year). And we will google chat while eating dinner. His birthday is the week after V-day and I'm getting him scrubs with his school logo on them (he needs them) and some money to the shooting range near his house and ammo (something he feels bad "wasting" money on, so a fun gift).  I know he said he was sending me flowers. I requested no candy, but who knows.
