USPS is so totally useless

So they raise the price of stamps on 1/26 but no post office has the new stamps yet two weeks later! They THINK they MAY get them in early next week. WTF! They should be allowing people to mail with old stamps until they get the new supply in. Yes, sure, I can use a 4 cent stamp and a 66 cent stamp, but that's not exactly a pretty option. When I asked the man at the post office why they didn't plan ahead and have the new stamps he told me that the reason was that they didn't have time? That Congress approved the price hike sooner than they could replace the stock of stamps.

So now I'm torn... wait and see what happens next week, or just put two stamps on. I don't feel like spending twice as much for Zazzle stamps and it will take too long to wait for stamps.com stamps.... this is something I wish I could have planned for in advance, but I didn't have the invitation to weigh until today.

  • Have you looked at the USPS online store?

Yes, they take 1-2 days to process plus 7 days to ship. The stores would probably have them before they'd come in the mail.

Well when do you want to send out your invites?  I would just order the stamps so you know that you will have them and then address all your envelopes, stuff them and seal them so that all you have to do when you get the stamps is slap the suckers on.

We're stuffing tonight. I'm handing off the stack to my FMIL this weekend to distribute and I'll be out of town all next week. So either I go with the 66 + 4 option now, or wait another week until I return. At which time, some people would have already received them.

    What do you mean 'distribute'?

I would just hold off giving any invites to your FMIL until you get back and get your stamps. You still have time.

  • Do they not have forever stamps you can use?

Also, I have placed orders from usps.com and they have always arrived earlier than 7 days.

  • Get the forever stAmps that are white roses or red hearts. That's what we did. Our post office had tons.
  • We can't use forever stamps, the envelopes are 2 oz, and thus 70 cents- not 48 cents.

@maggie0829- per my fiance's culture, invitations are handed out, not mailed. My FMIL is hand delivering all the invitations to her family, we're mailing the rest.

Gotcha.  Well then I would just tell her that you need to wait to give her her invites until you get the appropriate stamps and your invites in the mail.  That way everyone should get them around the same time.  Shouldn't be a huge deal (hopefully).

  • Sad. Hope your stamps show up soon :-(
  • I was mad about this too!  I had postcard STD's and waited a week to send hoping somewhere I could get the new postcard stamps.  At the time, even the online store didn't have them.  Instead, I had to use the old stamp + a 1 cent stamp on my little postcards.  I too asked the guy at the post office why they wouldn't have the new stamps when they raised the price and all I got was a shoulder shrug... ugh.  I'm just glad I didn't have to deal with this with my actual invites.  I think you should see if your FMIL can hold on the invites for a week and mail them when you get back.  Good luck!

  • After much debate, I opted to do a 66 cent stamp and a 4 cent stamp. I decided that at the end of the day- it was just postage and I would rather give my guests extra time than wait a week or so for new stamps. They don't yet have a wedding stamp in 70 cents either, but the butterfly is pretty.

  • Honestly, no one is going to care what stamps you use on the envelopes. I absolutely promise you. I ended up having to do the same. I have a  66 cent and then a 5 cent stamp. The 66 centers are super pretty and then the 5 cent ones are teapots, china teapots. lol.
But I actually think it looks neater when there are more stamps on the envelope, makes it more interesting.
The important thing is that you got them mailed out!!
  • I think you made the right call. It really is something your guests will barely even notice, if at all, so I wouldn't even worry about it. Sometimes we get hung up on these little details that only matter to us.
