  you shouldn't have an issue with using a marker. I worked as a framer at Michaels for several years, and that would look really cool. I would suggest that you have it in a frame, because otherwise people will sign right to the edge. (seen that many times with couples bringing in their photo guestbooks)

  another thing is if you are afraid someone will push too hard through the canvas, you could also put a board, or something like that to keep the canvas from bending too deeply.

  Definitely have it printed on canvas board (as opposed to framed) like the pic below, or cut/find a board that fits inside the back frame and secure it.  I doubt anyone would cut through the canvas while signing with a paint pen, but it can and will stretch as some write with a lot of pressure.  Plus, guests may not always use a soft paint marker provided but rather their own pen which will scratch and perhaps tear the canvas. Finally, it will be much easier for them to write on a solid surface as opposed to one that gives.

  I haven't yet, but plan to.  I've found a lot on etsy (tree's and stuff like that) that don't use thumb prints, just have people sign the leafs.  My mom is actually doing a painting for me on the canvas, and we will have peopel sign that.
