Equal marriage coming?

Does this mean what I think it means?!

http://www.lasvegasweekly.com/news/2014/feb/13/nevada-same-sex-couples-its/

Is it possible that by the time I'm getting married in April 2015, it will be legal in both Scotland and Nevada and so I might actually, properly, legally, officially be getting married?!

Re: Equal marriage coming?

  • I saw a similar article a couple of days ago and thought of you, that would be great! Is it July in Scotland? What would you do then, ceremony in Vegas only?
  • Right up until the Scottish Parliament passed it, everywhere said it wouldn't be until late into 2015 but now they seem to be saying autumn. I'm not sure when exactly though. If Vegas pass it as well by the time we go, then yes, we could go to the courthouse like every other couple and do it all there! I'm so excited, my girlfriend is telling me it probably won't happen and not to get my hopes up but that might be because I woke her at 8:30am after she got in off a nightshift because I'd just read that article :D
  • So exciting ! Its about time everywhere gets with it! So happy for you ladies!

  • As far as I understand it, we passed a law against it (sorry), so we'd have to undo that law for a marriage. You could still do a commitment ceremony. :( We'd need a lawsuit to have the law be declared unconstitutional before April 2015, so well, I wouldn't bet on it. I couldn't resist the pun.

I wish I had better news for you - we really messed up on that one. I'm glad that you'll at least be able to do it in Scotland! Very happy for you both!

Oh I understand all that, but there is a lawsuit working it's way through the courts and the attorney general and governor have said they won't defend the ban in court any longer because of the repeal of DOMA, the Windsor case and the most recent case in January where these previous two were used to judge it had been unlawful to remove a juror just for being gay.
If this suit is successful, then from the way that way article reads, it won't need to go to the vote in 2016 as it will be ruled unconstitutional and repealed immediately.
Virginia reached that conclusion on Thursday and from what I've read, the 9th circuit has agreed to fast track the Nevada case.

I'm not going to believe it's happening in case I'm disappointed, but I'm hopeful!
