Cat owners, please help *Second Update*

Re: Cat owners, please help *Second Update*

  • My cat had kind of similar issues - he wound up needed to get a camel hump because he was so dehydrated and jaundiced. I had to force feed him watered down wet food through a syringe and some crushed pills (he was not a fan of me for a while). I forget the exact diagnosis...The vet thought it could have been a worm or ate something that scratched his kidney or liver (I forget which) while passing through his system and thats why he stopped eating and drinking.  But, mucho bucks later he is back to his self.

  • Yay! That is great. I'm so glad kitty is feeling better.
  • YAY!!! So relieved! We had the same thing happen. The kitty with the gall stones had a fecal obstruction once due to eating some ribbon. It was gross, but that is where my mention of milk came in. Sounds like your kitty probably wouldn't have even tried the milk, but it's something that may lessen bills next time around :)

  • Yay glad you figured out the problem and he is already doing better!!

  • I am so relieved to hear that it's a minor issue and he is feeling better.
  • Yay! So glad Kitty is feeling better! If he continues to have a constipation issue, you can usually just add a couple spoonfuls of fish oil to his food. That should help keep him regular in the future.
  • Glad to hear they found the cause and that he's doing better. Yay for you for being such a great Mommy to him!
  • Glad to hear he's feeling better!!

  • Yay kitty is better!  I don't know if you normally feed dry food, but if you do, if you switch to a wet-only diet he may be less likely to have the same problem in the future.
  • @CrazyCatLady3 He normally eats dry in the morning and wet at night.  Since he's been sick we've been giving him mostly wet because it's his favorite and we really just want him to eat.  It's funny, my vet suggested we give him less wet food because it's fattening.  I had heard the opposite-- that wet food is better because it has less carbs and fillers.  Oy.  I think we will stick with half and half.

He's still hiding and not interested in playing, but hopefully this just means he needs a couple days to feel back to normal.

  • @jcbride2014 my cat gets constipated all the time (he's a long haired cat too and hates coughing up hairballs). I literally spent close to $1000 at vet's offices getting him un-constipated until finally one vet told me to add miralax to his wet food and it help!. I put a 1/4 t in a day and he can't even tell it's in there.

We do cut back on the dry food too (maybe like 2/3 cup a day).

I'm glad kitty is doing better!!!

  • $900 is some expensive shit...but glad he's feeling more like himself!
  • There is prescription $$ catfood that is used for cats that have this tendency.  You need a food with a low ash content.  Check the nutrition ingredients on the food you regularly feed him.  This is a common problem with older cats.  I kept a kitty going until he was 17 years old with this.

    Seriously lol.

I'm so glad to hear that he is okay, and that constipation was the culprit. Hopefully in a few days he'll be back to normal!

Our cat Tigger, whom I mentioned in this thread, had the same issues and we do the Miralax trick too!  He gets it every other day because he was loosing too much weight when we gave it to him daily.

I am so glad your kitty is on the mend!!!!!

  • I'm sorry about your cat still :( animals are hard because they really don't want to show pain, it makes them targets to predators. Good luck.

  • Thanks everyone!  It means a lot that you were concerned.  He is not back to 100% but we think he has definitely turned the corner.  I don't know what initially caused the constipation and fever, but maybe we'll never know.  At least he is getting better!
