Certified or Notarized Birth Cert Copy for Wedding

We are required to have a Notarized copy of our birth certificates for our wedding in Jamaica. I ended up just ordering us each a certified birth cert copy from our birth counties. I am wondering if I should just send these copies or if I should go ahead and have notarized copies made. We do not get these copies back if we send them but we each have an extra copy now.

Re: Certified or Notarized Birth Cert Copy for Wedding

  • I tried to have a copy of my birth certificate notarized to meet the marriage requirement (though not in Jamaica), but it's not allowed as a birth certificate is a public record. I just sent my actual certified copy to the celebrant. I have my original birth certificate, so I only requested one certified copy. My DH did not have his original birth certificate, so he ordered two copies.

  • I think that this is what I am going to do. We both have at least one extra so I might as well just sent certified copies. It looks like some places might notarize but I think it is more trouble than it is worth. If I ever happen to need more copies I will just order them again as it only takes a few days for them to come in the mail.
