honeymoon :)

Because I am waiting for my roommate's plane to land and I am bored: what are you doing for your honeymoon?

Also, what are you doing the night of your wedding? What was important to you on picking the hotel for that?

We're staying at the hotel where we arranged a block for our guests. Our reception is ending relatively early (9pm), so our plan is to go back to hotel via shuttle, then going to the mobile food trucks on campus at our alma mater (we're getting married just off campus) for amazing stuffed sandwiches before going to all the old divey college bars we went to while we were in school - without college kids there since it's summer break. We'll wind down the night at the nice martini bar just off campus (they have 101 martinis on their menu at all times).

ETA: We don't have a honeymoon scheduled yet. I'm a workaholic, and my company goes into production the Monday after my wedding. I will be back at work, bright eyed and bushy tailed that morning!

  • Awesome, that sounds like so much fun. We just started discussing this and we are debating our budget which will help set what we are doing

We definitely want to take a 7-10 day trip to Ireland, but it is definitely not in our budget right now with the wedding and me needing a new car, plus saving for a house. Our work schedules are so incompatible (he's a sports official [paid in cash, which is AWESOME] 7 days a week in the fall and on weekends in the spring in addition to his regular day job; I work for a monthly publication so I am manic-busy every other week due to our production schedule), that we can rarely ever manage to schedule more than one day off together at a time.

To take off enough time to really DO Ireland, we'd have to schedule pretty far out in advance since FI's day job involves government testing that is also scheduled really far out in advance. We're not worried, though. Since we aren't planning on having children, we've agreed to spend the rest of our lives trying to see new places!

  • We did a DW, so we had a hotel to go to, rather than home.  We stayed in the hotel beside out venue, since it was run by our venue hotel (giving us access to the pool), but it was cheaper and and a kitchenette.  It was also right on the beach.  :)

Our HM was 3 weeks in the Eastern Med.  We did a few days in Venice and then hopped on a cruise that did Croatia, Greece (Patmos), 2 days in Israel, 2 days in Egypt, Kusadasi (Turkey) and finished in Athens.  We then flew to Istanbul foe a final 3 days, since we thought the cruise would have been better if it went there too.

Now to AW a little, we just booked out summer trip too, so I'm super excited about that.  We're doing 6 days in Iceland (IcelandAir will let you stop over for free for up to 7 days), then we fly to Helsinki and do the 3 Baltic countries.  We finish with a few days in Moscow and St. Petersburg before coming home.  And we got a crazy amazing deal through IcelandAir, which is why I'm so pumped about them now.  our tickets were $700 cheaper each than going direct to St. Petersburg with Air Canada, plus we got the stop in Iceland.

  • Oh I loved Ireland. I was lucky that my parents took me a few years bank and it was amazing. We had fun and rented a car and drove to different places. The pubs were awesome!!

  • @Winstonsgirl that is amazing! We don't have the money yet for something like that. Both still in school, though I graduate in June, he won't for two more years. Although we should have his loans paid off within a year or two if him graduating, depending on which job I take in June. But when he is done, we are totally going to Europe!!

  • We're going to Barbados for our honeymoon and I'm super excited because this will be my first real vacation (read: not a 2-night camping or road trip) in over 3 years -- and I had a double ear infection for the entire duration of my last vacation (and had to take 3 planes there and back).

We booked a B&B for our wedding night, and for me and my sister to stay in the night before. Our only real requirements were that it needed to be really close to our venue (the closest hotel is a 25-minute drive away, which I did not want to do), and I wanted an ensuite bathroom with a tub, because we currently only have a shower in our house and I really miss taking baths.

  • Hawaii I think - not sure about the wedding night yet.  I would like to stay in a hotel and not go back to the house since his kids will be there, lol.  We will see though!

  • We had a DW in Australia, so we were at our wedding resort the night before and of the wedding. We got married on a remote island, so I didn't really have any other choices!

We spent 4 nights at a resort prior to the wedding to beat jet lag and completely unwind. We spent 4 nights at our wedding resort in total- 1 night before our wedding and 3 after- then had another 6 nights for our HM! We traveled to another resort for the remaining part of the trip. We stayed all along the Great Barrier Reef the entire time! We loved it so much we're planning a trip back in August for our 2nd anniversary!

  • @qmda76 Hawaii is on or maybe list, not sure if we can afford it yet. Thinking we might use the money we save on loans

  • My FI is active duty Army, so we can stay at the Hale Koa hotel for pretty reasonable - he may also have enough airline miles to get us over there, so all of that helps!  He's in Afghanistan now until late spring, so he's socking away tons of money, otherwise I think we'd end up having a backyard wedding, lol.

  • We're spending two nights at the nicest hotel in our hometown. It's not super fancy or anything, but it is much better than the Days Inn down the street. Then we're flying to Jamaica for a full week. I can't wait for the stress to be done and to relax with my new husband on the beach!

  • We are going to Vegas for our honeymoon. We leave at 10am the Monday after the wedding and will come back Friday afternoon.

Our wedding night hotel is about a 30 min drive from the venue (reception ends at 11pm). We are very excited.

  • Our venue is a hotel/resort. We're spending the weekend there. Then we're thinking of Belize for 10 days.
  • @blueeyes90 Thanks, and good luck with school.  It's pretty awesome when you're finished.  Being set in our careers and able to travel is one of the best things about getting "older" I think.  We're much more able to plan bog trips than I could when I was in my 20's.

  • We're undecided so far-- wedding isn't until next year.  FFILs said a few months ago they would let us use their timeshare for Aruba, but we aren't counting on it for sure until they bring it up again.  If that doesn't come through, we will probably just do a long weekend somewhere local and then take a longer honeymoon in about six months.  We'd love to do a Viking cruise through Europe, maybe Germany and Hungary.

If you like Viking, check out Uniworld or AmaWaterways. They are a step up from Viking. We've been looking into similar cruises :)

  • We're going to Peru. We're going to go on a hike to Machu Picchu
  • We are finally booking our honeymoon this week.  We are going to Belize for 10 days, so excited!

  • Thanks @blergbot and @jells2dot0!  I will look into those other cruise lines.

  • We went to a nice hotel a few blocks from our wedding venue for the wedding night.

For our honeymoon, originally we wanted to go to Italy.  Couldn't make it work with our budget, especially since airfare for both of us was 3k.

Instead we went to California, LA and San Diego.  We stayed there two weeks, and had a blast.  We're not lay-on-a-beach type people, so we had a good mix of amusement parks, museums, the san diego zoo, parks, and a little beach stuff.

  • Just booked our flights to Ireland today! Spending 10 days there for our honeymoon. We're just going to stay at our place the night of the wedding, then fly out The next night.
  • We've rented a big house on Flathead Lake in NW Montana for our wedding and will be staying there as well has having our ceremony in the backyard. Wedding night we'll have it to ourselves as my parents & sister will be going to a hotel.

Not a clue what we are doing for our honeymoon yet. Definitely not going to be able to take it right away b/c of work schedules, but hoping we can take a week or so somewhere in August. I love reading what everyone else is doing ~ so many great ideas!

  • We just booked our honeymoon about two weeks ago. We're spending a week in Orlando. We splurged for a really nice resort and Orlando Flex tickets that will allow us to go to both Universal parks, the Universal water park, Sea World, and the Sea World water park as much as we want. So excited! We leave March 22nd. We're saving money by driving instead of flying. Since we're big NASCAR fans, we're stopping in Daytona in the way to check out the racetrack. I've never been on a real vacation in my entire life (just church camps and mission trips occasionally), so this will be a first for me.

  • Nice! Sounds like fun. Orlando is much too far for us to drive :(   But I never thought about it from FI's perspective. He's never been on a vacation either, just driving to Nebraska and back to visit family. Hmmm, that makes me want to spend more money to make it more special for him.

  • We are doing 5 nights in Punta Cana!! Just waiting for March 2015 airfare to go on sale so we can book. So excited!

  • @RajahBMFD speaking of NASCAR... FI races circle track here in Vegas and totally pushed for a honeymoon that included Talladega or Dover haha

  • We're just doing a local mini-moon. FI can't really be away from work too long at the moment, and we can't afford to do what we REALLY want to do - which is go to Australia and eat at all the Masterchef restaurants. So we're leaving straight after our reception, the place we're going to is about a 3 hour drive, so we'll be there before dark, stay the weekend and maybe another day or two, and then come home.

This is where Fi wants to stay for the wedding (we'll probably stay here for the weekend):

And, yes, I'm being totally AWish right now. I'm excited, I can't help it!
