Dress shopping - Vent

I've been to three separate places to try on dresses. The first place I went to had good customer service (was a small, family owned boutique) - they had a lot of nice dresses, and I looked great in the ones I tried on but they didn't have a selection of the fit of dress I am wanting in my size (fit & flare/mermaid/trumpet) - which I am a bridal 16. Second place I went to was the "McDonald's" of wedding dresses (I had to laugh when my BM called it that) - I had made an appt a week ahead of time and to say the least the whole appt was chaotic. The girl helping me was maybe 20 years old (she said she just graduated in 2012!) - so she had NO knowledge of inventory, dresses, fit, etc. And on top of that they had her working with another bride during my appt (which is standard, per them) - so lots of my appt I was stuck standing around in dresses I didn't even like waiting for her to come back and assist me. There was umpteen little girls running around the salon trying on prom dresses - very few of them had parents with them. They told me to pick out favorites online before coming in - which I did - they only had 2 of the 4 dresses there out of the ones I picked - and out of those two they were BOTH size ten. So I couldn't even try them on. :( They, again, didn't have many dresses at ALL in the style I want in my size. I asked her to please look up my favorite dress I found online to see which local "Dress McDonald's" had it - I was willing to drive - she went and came back and said the computer isn't pulling up the dress at all - it was saying they don't have that dress. I asked her more questions as to why that was and she said she had no idea - didn't offer to go to the manager to figure it out - nothing. Talk about a let down - especially since I was staring at their website at the dress right then! And the whole appt she kept saying how many minutes we had left. "you have 30 minutes left" - "you have 20 minutes left" - Here I was trying to try on dresses for me and also assist my BM's that were there since they were trying on BM dresses and getting opinions. The third place I went to yesterday was a smaller local store - the girl didn't even greet us when we came in - didn't pull any dresses for me - we basically looked ourselves, my friend (that had her baby with her) had to help me get the dresses on. It was just a mess. I am willing to drive to Chicago (2 hours) to try on more dresses there but I am so frustrated right now I feel like I am just going to experience the same thing. I KNOW what kind of dress I want, but no where seems to have them in my size to be able to even try them on! :( I am 6'2" and slim, so I am by no means a huge size but it sure does make me feel this way since no one carries my wanted dress style in my size! :( One other chain store I called in the suburbs said ALL their samples are 10's and 12's!! So I couldn't even try on anything there if I wanted! Thanks to anyone that took the time to read this and let me vent... :( Signed, Sad and frustrated bride :(

  • Ugh! That must be such a frustrating feeling and I'm SO sorry you had bad experiences.

I would definitely recommend going to a larger city if you don't have many bridal boutique options where you are. Contact them ahead of time and let them know the style you want and the size you are so that you get an idea of how much you'll actually be able to try on, and so that they can get an idea in advance of what they should and shouldn't pull for you.

Keep your chin up! It will get better, I promise you. I also recommend not doing BM dresses on the same day, because you don't want to feel rushed or stressed about that while trying to find your dress. It'll be a much better experience if you do one on one day, and the other on another day.

  • @pumpkinsandturkeys -- you're right -I should devote a separate day for BM's dresses, I never thought of that.

And thank you for your kind words - these shopping "Events" are supposed to be so special and I really haven't had a great experience yet! :(

  • I hear ya. I've had one or two bad experiences myself, but don't let that colour your opinion of the process as a whole! There are some great stores out there (ie: not bridal McDonald's!) that really focus on customer service and attentiveness.

One thing that helped me was checking out websites and corresponding via email ahead of time, if possible. It seems like a no-brainer to go to a store's website, but how they describe themselves and their process in their 'About Us' and 'Appointment' sections (or equivalent) was really telling in terms of the experience I would have there. If they explained the consultation process well and used language that was customer-centric, it was usually a good sign. If they focused only on the designers they carry and it didn't feel personal, I didn't go there. If it took them days and days to reply to an email and it was very short and almost curt, it raised a red flag for me; however, if they were friendly, accommodating and timely in their email correspondence, it boded well.

    Good luck!

  • Yeah I wouldn't go anywhere that didn't give me their full attention during an appointment.  Even if the sales associate sucks, at least they won't leave you hanging in a dress you hate.  (I hope you left a review so they know their policy is one of the reasons you didn't buy there.)  I second pumpkinsandturkeys about calling the salons to see what they can get you in of the silhouette that you prefer.  I find it odd that they didn't try to get you in more samples.  I'm about the same size and several salons had plenty of samples larger that could be clamped down to show me.  Perhaps Chicago will be better for you at least in amount of samples.
  • Great ideas and suggestions - thank you so much - you've made me feel a little better :)

  • @TheFutureMrsRohlman22 - I did leave a review on the place from yesterday's Google plus site - I need to do the Dress McDonald's, too. I actually am contemplating calling and speaking with the store manager about that one though...

  • The worst part of when I went dress shopping was that the manager fussed out an employee in a really rude way right in the middle of the showroom.  That's such a pet peeve of mine--so unprofessional!  I didn't buy my gown there (or at any actual bridal shop, actually).

Hope you have a better experience next time!

  • Ugh, that sucks.  I'm sorry you had three bad experiences!  It sounds like it's definitely worth it to go to Chicago and try some more major bridal shops.  A size 16 should not be hard to find.  I wish I was that tall and slim!  But you definitely want a reputable place that can make sure you are getting the correct length, etc. for your height.

I had a terrible experience at a very high-end shop in my home state and that has also turned me off from shopping for the time being.  I think I might cross the river into New York, even though I'll have to pay extra tax, in order to get a better experience.  It's probably worth it to travel and put some more time into finding a store you really want to give your business to.  Good luck!

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • @blondeej Where are you from? I can give you the name of the bridal salon I got my dress from, they were amazing. Super friendly, helpful, etc. I live about an hour south of Chicago and the salon is one town over from me, so depending on where you are it may be closer for you than driving to the city.
  • Sorry you had a bad experience but it will get better! I would definitely keep looking and I found it helpful for once I saw a dress I knew I wanted to try I called to make sure they had it and that I would even be able to try it on.  especially when you are not the sample size it makes a big difference and I am sure there are plenty of stores that will accommodate.

  • @pittiemama14 - I am about 2.5 hours west of the City - so it takes about 2 hours to get to Aurora/Naperville.... Please do send me the info to your salon! I made a list yesterday of 4 places in the Aurora/Naperville area I want to go try...

  • Do the road trip!  I had bad experiences locally and ended up doing a road trip to the DC area and it was the best thing ever.  Went to two salons Cherry Blossoms Bridal and Curvy Girls Bridal, both wonderful.  I bought my dress from Curvy Girls.  I tried to go to their site last Thanksgiving and they are now closed.  The experience of the road trip was so much better though.  Good luck!
  • I pm'ed you the name/website. Good luck!
