How formal of an invite would you do?

Our venue is a well-known high end resort located in upstate NY. Ceremony at 12:30pm, reception immediately following. My dress is pretty damn fancy. FI is wearing a tux - I KNOW! It's before 6pm! ZOMG. Dad is wearing tux. The moms are both wearing fancy floor length gowns. I honest to god do not care what my guests wear.
Well, if someone showed up in a white dress, I might stab a bitch. Just kidding. Not really.

Anyway, I've always been told that the invitation dictates the formality.  So what kind of invite do I choose? I have lots of time being that the wedding is not until September. But I'm bored.

Re: How formal of an invite would you do?

  • Do you have examples of invitations that you are considering?

Based on the information you provided I would limit the "DIY" look and feel and have something printed, even if it was printed at Kinkos.

  • What kind of reception are you having?  Plated, buffet, gloved service, multi course, lots of dancing, no dancing?

  • I haven't decided between plated and buffet. But gloved service and multiple courses.
    Lots of dancing
    Live music - we're having a DJ

I'll definitely be ordering from Wedding Paper Divas. I just don't know what style yet. There are so many to choose from. But I'm sticking mostly within their "classic" category. But even those tend to vary a lot, you know?

WPD is great.  If you haven't done so already, they usually let you order 8 free samples.  It definitely helped us to make a decision actually seeing/feeling the invites.  We ended up using the "Estate Affair" style, which was very simple and elegant.  IMO, it's hard to go wrong with simple and elegant for a wedding.
  • I will definitely get some samples. That's great to know! I ordered my STDs from them and was really happy with them.

I would go with something fairly formal, then.  Simple, with just black and white or metallic touches.  WPD has so many pretty designs!

  • WPD does have pretty stuff! I would go with darker, muted colors. Maybe some metallic?

  • I really seem to be drawn to the black and white ones. I just ordered some samples. Thanks for you help everyone!
