Impulsive decisions (NWR)

So I occasionally do things that are a little impulsive. Like yesterday I woke up and decided my hair needed to be different. So I go and had it cut pretty short. Not like pixie cut short but a lot shorter than I usually wear it. Well I decided that wasn't different enough so I colored it black and put purple streaks in it. I thought it was really cute yesterday but now I'm not sure I like it. Lol.

Re: Impulsive decisions (NWR)

  • I used to be really impulsive about my hair, which explains all the pictures of me as a platinum blond when I was in college. I've kept things far more low-key since working in corporate environments, but I do seriously miss having blue/blond/silver/purple hair. The "craziest" I've gone in the last few years is bright red, which is apparently acceptable since it fades out so fast on my dark hair.

  • Uhm....well....

Yeah, I got nothin'. I hate changes to my hair, so I'm not one to randomly or impulsively change it, and I definitely don't work in an industry where purple streaks would be acceptable.

Are the colour changes permanent or temporary?

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • The black is permanent but the purple is semi-permanent, whatever the hell that means. Lol. I haven't been this impulsive about my hair since high school. I used to dye it all kinds of crazy colors. One of my co-workers keeps his hair bright blue so I know my boss won't care. I'm not sure FI is going to like it though. He is out if town for work and hasn't seen it yet.
  • A few months back I went to get my hair colored.   On an impulse I got a black with a purple hint. It was a new product.  I liked it the first day, pretty subtle .  Then the purple turned eggplant.  I went back a few days later and the colorist was horrified at how the colored changed so much he decided never to use the product again.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I could never do that to my hair.  Kudos to you for being willing!!  I've got red hair and I've never dyed it, as I'm worried I'd never get the regular colour back.  Never highlighted it either.  Virgin hair on my head.  :)

  • I tend to stay fairly conservative when it comes to my hair, so I really can't relate haha. I have naturally dark hair (almost black), and it has been every shade of brown, various shades of red, and highlighted up, down, and all over the place.

I'm kind of on the whole 'bronde' thing right now, and really enjoying it.

If the purple is semi-permanent, it will fade after 20 - 30 washes. However, it will not wash out completely. You will need to have the colour stripped and/or dye over it if you dislike it.

  • Hmmm... I might have to dye over it. I'm going to see what my BFF and FI think of it.
  • I wish I was more adventurous with hair. I occasionally will be like, my hairs too long. It needs to be shorter.

I did dye my hair red for Halloween this year, (I was Daria) it was semi permenant and washed out after the new year.

  • I get impulsive with my hair, but nothing too crazy. The craziest I've gone was blonde (I have dark brown hair), and I hated it. Other than that, I dye it black, or maybe a lighter shade, or get highlights. But that's about it. I also hate cutting my hair. So in terms of length, not much change there.

  • I'm not really even sure what my natural haircolor is any more!  I keep it highlighted with red and blonde streaks.  (it's a light brown color naturally)

  • I lack the impulse gene so kudos to you for giving boring folks like me a little spark. The only thing I do with my hair on a (sadly, far too regular) basis is color the bright white strip that grows far too quickly for my liking. I started to go white at 26, and I blame my mother (…she was completely white by 28). I would love nothing more than to be a redhead, but my pocket book could never keep up with that maintenance. Tear.

I get the urge to do something different to my hair every once in a while. It's been red and highlighted and every couple years I chop it short and about once a year I get bangs. I'm tempted to try blonde but it sounds like a pain since my hair is dark dark brown. I'm scared it will turn out earwax orange.

If I had the money to do it I would probably have different hair colors all the time. Right now it's natural. I do want to do something different by wedding time. Hm, what to do, what to do...

  • I like my natural hair color, which is fairly close to black.  So I've never colored it.  Ever since college though, I do get tired of it being super long (I don't like sitting on it) and occasionally get more than a foot chopped off.  Which is always fun because by the time it grows out, nobody has seen me with shoulder-length hair.  I've done it about 3 times now.  Always amusing.
  • My hair is virgin too, @WinstonsGirl!  I wish I was a redhead.  There are redheads on both sides of my family, but my hair is a medium brown.  When I go in the sun, it streaks sort of amber/reddish color.  I dyed it with semi-permanent dye once, sort of a deep reddish burgundy.  It was okay but I didn't like it enough to keep doing it.  I just let it wash out.  As for cut, I tend to grow it long for three years, donate it and get a bob, then grow it again.  I'm in a growing cycle right now and will probably chop/donate it after the wedding.

My sister has the impulse gene, JDluvr.  She's constantly chopping it.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • I only recently tried dyeing / highlighting my hair. Just reddish blonde highlights in brown hair, so nothing crazy. But my PITA boss, whom I do not get along with at all, said it was unacceptable and made me dye it back. (And yet one of my coworkers has cotton candy streaks...)

I have always wanted to try a bold color though! Like maybe hot pink highlights! I have dark brown hair with some reddish gold mixed in thanks to my Irish lineage.
  • I've always been quite impulsive, though FI and MOH keep me in check between them. I change my hair colour sometimes as often as once a week. I've been lucky in my last two jobs, that no one cared what I looked like. Being primarily phone and email-based, and almost never actually having to deal with clients, I'm fairly certain I could have shown up to the office in my pajamas and no one would have batted an eye. In the last two years my hair has been red, orange, green, blue, purple, pink, and turquoise, in varying combinations and patterns. The only colour I haven't done is yellow and that's because I'm fairly certain yellow hair would make me looks ill. But I've been dyeing my hair for grey coverage since high school because girls are bitches.

I also decided last January that it was too hot and my hair was too long, and after a week of trying to get an appointment that didn't cost in excess of $40 for a trim (stupid city prices), I eventually tied it into a low ponytail, went into the bathroom, and cut it off myself. I didn't do a bad job of it either, considering we had a tiny bathroom and a mirror smaller than my phone... Now I'm trying to grow it out for the wedding in October. Right now it's just touching my shoulders and is doing this very weird '90s/Prue Halliwell type thing.

  • I work in an industry that requires me to have a headshot that looks like me. I'm so lazy about having to re-do a headshot so that it actually looks like me that I very rarely change my hair. Or I'd probably do it a lot more often.

But really, it's just hair! It will grow back and you can always change it again if you don't like it.
  • @JCBride2014 Yay for Gingers!!  :)  I'm actually the only one in my family with red hair, though some relatives had tinges of red in facial hair or something similar.  But everyone else has brown hair in my family.  My parents used to tell me I was left by the milkman, or other variations

@FiancB -- I was the same way! I ended up lightening my base (same colour as yours) to a light-medium brown (about 3 - 4 shades lighter than my natural), and then we did full highlights in caramel blonde and a lighter blonde, to lighten my colour overall. I'm absolutely in love with it, and my hair is never orangey when it fades or dry and fried.

  • @pumpkinsandturkeys that makes me feel better! Did you dye or do anything to your eyebrows as well? Because mine are pretty much black.

I'm starting to get greys and I actually don't really mind because I figure the sooner I go gray the sooner I can easily dye it fun colors haha. I do like my natural color but I wish it were easier to change for the heck of it. That's also the only reason I've never done anything like pink streaks- I don't really want to pay for it, but I know I can't do it on my own without some disaster either.

  • @FiancB -- I didn't do anything to my eyebrows. They're pretty much black, too, but they're not overly thick, so it's not a jarring contrast when you look at my face. I just use a medium brown brow powder to fill them in a bit, and that lends them to looking lighter than they actually are. You could lighten them a bit if needed, though. Also, I'm going grey (actually, white!), too, and the blonde hides some of that nicely when my roots start to come in haha

  • At least it's not a childish tattoo that spans your lower back....totally an impulse for me but now I'm like..."crap".

  • So FI totally loves the purple so I think I might keep it for a while. Hehehe

Purple and black can actually look amazing together. I bet it looks awesome. Glad your FI likes it!

Last impulse that happened with my hair wasn't my own. It was the impulse of the stylist who told (and showed) me that she would cut only an inch and a half. Five inches of my hair gone later and 'Houston, we have a problem.'

Not a happy camper...my hair went from chest length to shoulder length in a skinny minute. I hadn't had my hair cut in a year so this sucked. Big time. She also knew that I am getting married in six months. GAH.
  • Ugh that would be awful. I hate it when you trust the stylist and then they do something you hate.
  • I should mention my roommate in college decided to go red on impulse and bought some dye.  She thought it would be great if I helped her dye it in the community bathroom.  I don't know if the box wasn't good dye or her hair was off but she had washed-out pinkish red hair for a while after that. Looked pretty awful with her easy-to-tan skin.
  • My cousin was just over to do my highlights. (She works for a high end salon). I got keratin done on a whim. So not like me. I'm hoping it really does cut my blow drying time in half and keep me from getting so knotty.

  • I haven't seen my natural color since I was in 6th grade. I tend to stick to natural colors though and have gone through every shade of brown, blonde, and red there is. I tend to be really impulsive with my hair because I figure it will grow back or can be dyed over. Last month I trusted FI to pick up hair dye and I managed to turn my hair 6 different shades of orange and had to finally get it professionally done.

  • I went through the whole punk phase in junior high and high school so I had every color hair- purple, black, bleach, blue, red, one time pink and aqua stripes! Along with some very dark lipstick and numerous chains jewelry- oh yea so attractive. It fried my hair and made it so dead and dry that I have never dyed it since college to keep it healthy. Now that I'm a boring grown up, me being implusive is "Babe I bought a new comforter!"

  • I have gotten so many compliments on the purple. Even my great grandmother loved it. I guess purple is my hair color... Who knew?
