Venue Requiring Special Wording on Invite

Re: Venue Requiring Special Wording on Invite

  • OP - since this priest is a family friend, I'm assuming he will be invited to your reception, yes?  Then he will know what time you put for your ceremony start time.  I would just be prepared to answer him when he asks about that.

Also, your Miami driving was spot on.  For work, we had a document review in Miami for 2 weeks and I volunteered to be a driver for one of the cars.  Biggest mistake ever!  By mid-week on the first week, I wanted to kill myself!  All I could think was that they say Jersey drivers are terrible, at least we let people out of driveways or side streets instead of blocking them in repeatedly!  I finally had to cut off people in my minivan to get out of the hotel parking lot!

Officiant is a family friend, but doesn't go through all the paperwork-that's for the wedding coordinator. So IDK if she'll "force" us to see the invite. Maybe I'll go on one of those sites where you can make a mock invite sent to you to see their quality with the 30 min earlier time ;) a little sneaky.

I apologize on behalf of my people (because I know they would never) for their driving habits. Cutting people off, not letting people merge, not using turn signals, coming into peoples lanes without looking....one time I drove down with a BM and at one point I told her, "Don't Look," because I had to weave through people changing 4 lanes to go from one side of the highway to the other (while some people were speeding at 80 mph and some slowed down to 50). This was after a chick in a Crown Royal almost ran us off the road because she didn't see us in her blind spot. My friend was having a mini panic attack, which I didn't blame her for.

  • How do these perpetually late people hold down a JOB??!?!?! jeeze
A lot of people speed in Miami, don't use turn signals, don't know how to properly drive period. If you ever drive down there, I apologize on behalf of my people.

Me, three!  Thanks for the apology, lol.  I lived in Miami for three months after Hurricane Katrina.  I thought New Orleans drivers were the worst (rare to see a turn signal used also), but it was nothing compared to Miami.

I was there for Hurricane Wilma when all the street lights were down for a week.  Insane.  It was like the Wild, Wild West on those roads.  Aaahhh...good time, good times, lol.

  • Our venue is both our ceremony and reception venue, and because it's an event group, they're also our DOC and caterer. They require approval of the invitation wording before we can send them--it's part of our contract, so we can't just shrug and send invitations anyway.

(They mostly require it because in the past, couples have included inserts with directions to the venue, and too often, the directions are wrong and LOTS of people--including shuttle drivers!--can't find the venue.)

They have to approve the start time on the invites, and because they're also the DOC, they're also the ones who are actually planning the start time. We told them we wanted a 3:30pm ceremony, and sure enough, our timeline has "invitation start time" and "actual start time."

However, the start times are 10 minutes, not 30 minutes, apart, and we're going to see if that's just an estimate or if they're REALLY not going to let us start the processional until 3:40pm even if we're all set to go.

As someone who's chronically 5 minutes late, and often even later, I figure I'd speak up about it in this thread. I am NEVER late for weddings. The only time I've been late for major important events has been when there have been emergencies or unforeseeably bad traffic (I'm talking traffic jams that cause everyone, not just me, to be 1 hour or more late). I always get to school on time, and when my jobs have had set start times, I'm rarely a few minutes late (although I'm also rarely a few minutes early).

So if I'm not late to important events, work, or school, how am I chronically late? Well, I'm rarely EARLY for anything unless I plan to arrive somewhere 30 minutes ahead. Dinner with friends? 5 minutes late. Coffee break with classmate? 5 minutes late. Honey, I'll be home at 8pm? Hahaha just kidding.

  • You guys have not seen bad driving until you come to Boston. This place DISGUSTS me with how badly people drive. Instead of having rush hour--that period of time where traffic is really congested--you have about a 3-hour window of opportunity where you can drive during the day and not be stuck in traffic. Traffic starts to build up between 6-6:30am, tapers off to manageable between 10-2, and builds back up for "rush hour" around 2:30 until after 7. This is the worst place on earth.
  • @JellyBean52513 We're not BAD drivers. It's just that the roads were designed for cows!

Yep, happens in Miami too. We went one one particular highway and got stuck in traffic at around noontime on a Saturday. We weren't going towards/near the beach either. Just soooooo many people live there

My hometown in MetroWest has this one weird rotary that's two circles combined. It's not the most dangerous one in the town (there's an infamous one by a state prison that's as basic as it gets, but somehow manages to be absolutely terrifyingly difficult), but because of the extra circle, out-of-towners tend to either panic OR they calmly breeze through the wrong way.

That's what I hate about theses excuses for an entire culture's perpetual tardiness. They are late to social functions because they choose to be late because everyone enables them. I am sure they can manage to get their asses to work on time, regardless if they are Cuban, Hawaiian, etc.

  • Fi and his family call this Italian time, Sicilian Time, or [Fi's last name] Time.  I always try to be on time, and it frustrates the hell out of me.  FSIL, both FBIL's, and FBIL's GF were all late to Fi's cousin's wedding and had to walk all the way through the outdoor tent during the ceremony to get to a seat.  #awkward

I come from an Italian family and we aren't always late for everything. In fact my family is usually early for everything.

  • It's funny to read all this. My dad's side is from Portugal and whenever we went to a family function, we were always early and they were always late. My mom hated to be late, so she insisted on being there early. I think that's why I am terrified of being late. It goes back to my childhood...

I can't stand lateness. I grew up in a military family and we were brought up with the understanding that if you are early, you're on time & if you're on time, you're late. I told the coordinator at my venue not to let anyone in if they were late. Luckily that didn't happen as most of my friends & family share my views on lateness.

I live in Jakarta, Indonesia and the traffic is horrendous. My husbands office is maybe 3 miles away and it takes him a few hours to get home from work most days. There are stop signs and street lights but you would never know it, it's basically a free-for-all on the streets.
This. Drilled into my head in high school by my band director... Early is on time, on time is late and late is UNACCEPTABLE!

Me too! To this day, it's rare for me to be less than 15 minutes early for anything. FI, on the other hand, is perpetually late. It isn't unusual for us to arrive to things separately. lol
