Cost of open bars

Re: Cost of open bars

  • We're doing a consumption bar, which I love because I would hate to pay a per-person amount for the bar when I know for a fact there's a lot of people who won't be drinking. We'll have 2 bars, and each bar just needs a minimum of $250 sold by the end of the night. Easy.

  • Our open bar will start during our cocktail hour and continue throughout the night until about 1am. The entire package including a four course meal with duo entree, hot and cold hors d'oevres during cocktail hour, a late-night table with sandwiches, squares, fruits, etc, as well as premium liquor service throughout is costing us $129 per person. This includes all taxes and service fees. We are in Ontario, Canada.
  • At my venue we decided on a consumption bar.

The per person rates were as following:
    First hour - $25/person
    Each Extra Hour - $18/person

    So, a 5 hour reception (cocktail hour + 4 hour reception) would be $25 + 4($18) = $97/person...crazy!

  • Our place allowed us to bring in our own alcohol.   We still paid over $2k because we still made it top shelf.   One good news was we could return all unused bottles, so that allowed us to over buy so we would not run out.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
