Stupid/Regretful Wedding Purchases/Expenses

I know im not the only one who has bought stuff or hired services and then months later thought WTF???!!! I will kick this off:

$580 on Elvis & Showgirls - yeh its Vegas... but I probably shouldnt have impulse-bought that! Here is hoping they bedazzle me on the day.

Favor Boxes - So I bought favor boxes BEFORE deciding what my favors were going to be. Then when I found the favors I loved... they wouldnt fit in the stupid favor boxes I already bought. So WTF am I going to do with 50 favor boxes???!!!

$1000 on lighting! Yes kids you read that right a cool grand! Sure we get 12 uplights and a big LOVE marquee sign but $1000!!! I nearly died when I reviewed my budget/contracts. Holy shitballs!

This post is depressing

Re: Stupid/Regretful Wedding Purchases/Expenses

  • well I didn't do many upgrades but I think on your wedding day you will feel better about the show girls and Elvis. It will be a fun experience for everyone!

And as far as the up lighting goes I think that too will look better in person then in your head right now! Try not to let it bother you too much cause I'm sure on your big day it will all look so good once it all comes together :)

  • After we picked our date and signed our contract I bought matches and napkins off the knot.  And I bought WAY too many.  We are going to be using these matches until our 10th anniversary!

I agree with Valerie, I think the Elvis and Show girls will be a big hit and $580 doesn't seem horrible for them.
We had our dream wedding at Mirage on May 3, 2014!

  • I think we have all been there a time or two in our life. I have impulsed bought stuff for different events in my life and kicked myself later.
With this i really had to think do i really need this or not? With each item i have bought i have looked at it and waited a day and then came back to it.
Kinda like when you posted the Groupon thing for Treasure Island man i was kicking myself for that!

how long is elvis and his girls goign to be there?
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • also do you have a site or group that you can sell the favor boxes on?
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • Hahaha on the matches! I keep thinking I want the napkins but im not buying anymore stuff! I hope everything does look amazing on the night. I think uplighting is definitely a must for our theme (vintage vegas) so I feel a bit ok. Plus I have paid the 50% deposit which makes me feel a bit better looking at the BALANCE only. Still seems ridiculous spending that much on lighting.

  • Everything will look amazing and be worth it! I has shoes made that are amazing but completely impractical and the FI nixed them. My only other purchase that won't be used is a gorgeous birdcage veil. I decided to use a traditional veil but I am hoping to incorporate the fascinator I am in love with into the veil.

  • My friend regretted buying special robes that had "Bride", "Maid of Honor", and "Bridesmaid" on them. She and her WP wore them for about a half-hour, and (duh) nobody has worn them since. $250 down the drain.

Also, favors that have the couple's name/date on them. I never use those items because it's weird. Nobody is so special to me that I need/want to remember their wedding every time I have a drink, and luggage tags are only used once (if at all). Waste of money. Just buy edible favors. Everyone likes food, and it's one less thing for guests to pack when they fly home.
  • wrigley~ i totally understand that! I've always thought those were silly but that's just me.

I am glad that i found this group b/c i would have never have thought to do the welcome bags/survival kits

  • mo i do have a crazy expense, i spent $160 for my shoes, they are being custom made, we are huge Seahawks fans but for me it's a crazy amount
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • @ssteele04 did you purchase your shoes and send them to the guy to paint? If so where did you get them? I really really want painted shoes but I just haven't found any shoes I like that would be good for painting.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who bought more than one dress. I actually bought 5.
Wait, hear me out. I bought a modern one at a Brides Against Cancer event ($450), and the more I looked at the photos, the more I hated it.
I really wanted a vintage dress, and then I saw a lot of 4 vintage dresses on eBay, size M-L, no other details. It was a lot, after all, and priced at $80 including shipping.
I was lucky - two of the four fit, and one is the winner, so the other three are going back on eBay. If they don't sell, on to the vintage stores for consignment. I know they'll find a home. It'd be awesome if I could get back not just the $80 for the eBay dress (almost a given), but if I got enough to cover the modern dress as well.
    So...anyone want a vintage wedding dress, size M-L? :)
  • We haven't really been extravagant on anything so not regretting anything (yet!), although I have been second guessing getting personalised koozies/drink coolers for the DDB, we haven't bought them yet and I've been thinking the same thing about whether they'll ever get used again and if they're a bit pointless. They're not very expensive but we could still spend that money on extra booze ...

UK based bride, getting married in Vegas on 14th April 2014!
  • Hahaha Jiimanie im almost thinking the same thing but I much prefer a koozie when im drinking out of an icy cold can. The price difference for just coloured koozies vs printed koozies.... well I can justify the personalised ones... even if they do get thrown away.

  • @shoebunny~ it is Eyekandy Studios on facebook, he airbrushes whatever you want. i will say tho that his " turn around" time is not accurate, it took him 2 weeks to send me a invoice just to get them started, it finally came down to a very stern text, and i'm still waiting...he's supposed to have a 2 week turn around time, it's been about 3 weeks now, so i'm hoping they are as amazing as the pictures!

  • Add another one to the list. Just spent $193 on a sash for the wedding dress! But it sure is purdy :

Between this and the alterations my $500 David's Bridal gown is now approaching $1000 total. Aye che wowa!

  • @allyido I love that sash!! It makes me wish my dress needed one.

  • Not bad expenses at all; don't feel bad! The Elvis and showgirls are so quintessentially Vegas. Your guests will be raving about what a fun element they add, and I guarantee you will be happy you went for it too. I wanted an Elvis, just to do a few songs at the end of our reception, but my fiancé said a big no to that. Elvis it up!
  • The cool thing about the Elvis idea is it will give u some time. When everyone is not focused on u. Plus if you have some wall flowers it can help living things up. An empty dance floor will stay that way till one person has enough courage to dance.
  • So far I've been good keep ing the expenses down. But everything I want keeps becoming a custom thing. I almost paid 250 for a cake topper. Thank goodness for pinky I decided to make it myself. My ring also went for a gold band with diamonds to a custom designed one. I hope I love it
  • I want the Elvis and showgirls! I want something g special and vegasy so I would totally spend the extra on an Elvis impersonator. Maybe on the party bus? I'll have to look into it. I'm pretty cheap, I bought a $200 drew at the brides against Breast cancer event. We got the basic wedding package with no frills or add ons and I don't think I will be getting hair and make up done, although if we don't get a lot of yeses I may splurge on this one. Our wedding budget is $5000 and we will probably be under it.

Yaya good for you! My biggest splurge was 290 for my belt! I love it though so had to have it!

  • Hey All, I hear ya's! I want the pictures w/ Elvis at the Las Vegas sign on my wedding day - it's 450 but, I want it - So, I put it on my Honeyfund Registry!! @missmo I also want a show girl TERRIBLY but, I figured, I rather have more food & beverage then a show girl (I think, lol). I haven't really done "Extras". Most Extravagant most definitely is my dress but, it's my dress! My budget for was 3,000 and I spent under that w/ veil, tiara, and alterations so in my book, I did good, LOL!

Oh wait I bought a blinged out hanger 60 bucks and my dress probably wont be able to go on it but, I wanted it! LOL. Mine says Bride cause I'm not changing my name.
    Anniversary
  • We did a Honeyfund Registry also!

  • I bought my 4th pair of wedding shoes this week...I know I can send at least one pair back.  I should be able to take back the 2nd pair I bought but those are my back ups so I will likely keep them.  The first pair, my favorite, is not returnable.

  • I'm feeling exceedingly guilty about the price of our hotel room for this trip.  it's the biggest expense of our wedding.  but i'm a hotel room junkie and I've never stayed at the wynn and if we get the upgrade i'm crossing my fingers for it'll be considerably less than if i'd booked that suite outright.  i keep telling myself that it IS our wedding and to stop making myself crazy about it but i worry i'm being too extravagant.
  • i forgot about the wedding room! yes we are paying a lot for our suite, more than i have ever paid for anything in our life but only b/c we are bringing our three children so we are getting a 2bdr suite

  • @stonermoog the Wynn is worth every penny!!!! :) enjoy!
