  For other posters: Yes, using live animals as props is cruel no matter how much mitigation you think you are doing. I went to a wedding where they used goldfish, and the B&G bragged beforehand about how it was NOT cruel and they were going to use them as pets. Well halfway through the reception there were dead goldfish in 3 of the tables. The children attending were HYSTERICAL at them dying, and their parents having to use that moment to explain about life and death.  All of the other guests completely grossed out at dead, floating goldfish so no one ate their meal.

  
  

  Animals are living beings, not centrepieces. Would you put a puppy or a kitten in a cage in the middle of your table at your wedding?
