  • But how awesome would it be if a leprechaun brought you a pot o' gold?! ;-)

In all seriousness... I would outline precisely how much this increases your total by, including extra linens, extra chairs, extra centerpieces, extra programs, extra favors, extra cake (assuming all these people even fit into your venue). What does all THAT add up to? And bear in mind that it can often be a big burden for single people to even find a date to bring... I had a coworker who all but offered to pay people to be his +1 because he felt like since he "got one," he needed to bring one. I personally thought it was a relief when I was single to not have to find someone to bring. Plus, then I got to hit on the hot groomsmen in peace - maybe there will be a love connection at your wedding! And keep in mind the dangers of having 40 total strangers at your wedding... they could be horrible people who are rude to your other guests, sloppy drunks, exes of other guests, etc. Not to say strangers should never be welcome, but that's a HUGE number of people you'll have no idea about until potentially the day of your wedding. If your FI has honestly and thoughtfully considered all these things and the personal sacrifices it will take on both your parts to accommodate these people, then I think it's up to him to decide where that extra money comes from. Is having a kickass nursery for your future baby worth giving up in favor of having your cousin's mailman attend your wedding? For how long is he willing to eat Ramen noodles to accommodate that girl Uncle Larry just met at the gas station?
