Wine service during dinner?

I think some venues that require this may use their bartenders as servers during the meal.
I'm 99% sure that our venue uses a separate bartender, so the bartender(s) won't be monitoring people's dinnertime drink consumption, which is a concern to me.

My FI doesn't care either way, it's not breaking etiquette, and FMIL is footing the bill- so I'm going to go with whatever she wants.

  • If the meal is plated and there are no "indicators" on escort cards as to the meal choice, I can understand why they want people in their seats when the entree is served.... I do think there could be a better way though.

  • The banquet director at our venue offered switching to wine service during dinner as a cost-saving move...I thought it was the silliest thing I'd ever heard though. He wanted to actually have waiters pass poured glasses of wine to everyone with their dinner, thinking it would save them from getting up and getting a mixed drink... but only about 2/3 of our guests drink at all, and people could still take a glass thinking it was the polite thing, have a sip then still want a cocktail. So much potential for waste, and wouldn't make anyone drink any less liquor. Strange. Took a pass on that one. We'll likely close the bar just while dinners are being served so everyone is seated and there's less foot traffic.
