Big Bang Theory fans

@lyndausvi and anyone else

CBS and Chuck Lorre just renewed BBT for another three seasons, which will take it through 10 years, so I imagine that's going to be the end of it -- 10 years is a long time for a scripted sitcom to run these days.

What do you think of this season? I am not a fan of the direction they're taking the Penny character. She's too bitchy, too snobby, too mean. It was funny in the earlier seasons when Leonard was nerdy and into her and she was nice, but now it's like, OK, you're an unemployed would-be actress and former waitress. He's a theoretical physicist at a prestigious university doing ground-breaking work. You're pretty, but you're not THAT pretty. I feel like she's being set up to be a trophy GF, but she's not much of a catch lately.

I like the Shamy romance, but I have to separate my personal feelings for Mayim Bialik (hate her, pretentious snobby bitch (I used to read her blog)) from the character she plays, which she plays well.

I'm interested to see what they're going to do with Raj's character. He needs something, because his character isn't good at being the fifth wheel among couples. It was great when he and Howard were essentially paired off -- they played off each other well. But I love the dimension Bernadette brings to the group.

I hope we get more episodes with Sheldon's mother. I love her!!

  • I also think that Penny needs softening up some...

H said recently that he misses "creepy Howard" since he has calmed down a little since he married Bernadette.  Creepy Howard made my skin crawl but it was still funny.  I miss having Raj and Howard paired up, their bromance was really funny.

I kinda miss creepster Howard too. I am Raj. I also don't really like Penny as a character all that much, the stereotypical blonde thing kinda irks me. At times it's funny, at other times it's like OK Leonard is way more of a catch than you are lol.

I didn't used to like this show at all but it grew on me. I love it when they do guest spots with various nerd heroes, like Stephen Hawking and Will Wheaton (I know a lot of nerds hate him, but whatever).
    image
  • Penny needs to progress and develop more as a character. They've kept her stuck in this little, broke blonde box for 7 years now and it's time to move on and gain more of an identity and independence.

I also reeeeeally dislike Mayim IRL, but she's so great at playing Amy. As long as Shamy keeps being awkward and doesn't get too into drama (like the episode where they had to have a serious conversation about showing affection, which was kind of a downer), I'm happy.

I'd love more episodes focusing on the four guys as friends, doing really quirky things -- the way they used to. I love the secondary characters, but that's really the heart and humour of the show.

Also, bring on the moms! I love them all. And Sheldon's sister needs to be on more often.

    image
  • I just love BBT in general but it took me so hard to accept Shamy's relationship. I love them together but is that all they will ever be is just together?

All of the leads -- Penny, Sheldon, Leonard, Howard -- are still in negotiations, last I heard.

Let's be realistic -- without Sheldon and Leonard, that series dies.

I think without Sheldon the series dies.
See, I think you need them both. You absolutely have to have Sheldon, yes, but without Leonard to play off of, Sheldon falls flat. They've never really developed a story line and rapport between him and the other characters.

    I agree.

Any interaction Sheldon has with the other characters is fleeting and only within the context of that one particular episode -- they never build relationships that carry through multiple episodes when it comes to him and Howard/Raj.

True, but if push comes to shove Sheldon could use the absence of Leonard to make a new friend/roommate (100 page contract and all) with one of the other characters.  Without Sheldon's quirks so many things would fall apart.

H'mmm. Interesting. I'm not sure I agree -- the last few seasons, the Sheldon character has really been focused on not being good at making friends, not wanting to make friends, not being likeable.

The backstory to Leonard -- which explains his crippling self-esteem issues and why he so willingly takes the shit Penny and Sheldon dish out to him -- is good, but could they find ANOTHER person who's so willing to be a doormat? And would that be believeable?

I'm having trouble believing it now, this far into the series. Like, OK, maybe that was true a while ago, but Leonard has come a long way, so why does he continue to accept the bullshit from Penny and Sheldon? He could find a prettier, smarter GF and a nicer roommate (or maybe someone who's both!) pretty easily.

  • I almost want them to introduce a new love interest for Leonard who actually sticks around for more than 3 episodes and gives him the self-confidence he's lacking. They almost had it with Priya, but I found her snobby, stuck-up, and annoying.
    THIS. ALL OF THIS.

I want a nice girl for Leonard -- not Leslie Winkle who uses him for sex, or Priya who wants to change him and who is snobby and stuck-up and annoying, and not Penny who's really full of herself.

  • Watching BBT is like... reliving college. FI wouldn't watch it for the longest time, but I finally got him into it last season, and he's hooked. I'm interested to see how they develop the characters over the next 3 season. I feel like they need to explore the Shamy relationship more, as well as throw Raj a bone or something. Poor guy, he's my favorite character, and he just can't seem to catch a break! And please, please, please... someone give Penny a personality transplant, I want to punch her in the face every time she speaks!
    ~*~*~*~*~

  • I really liked Priya. I thought she was pretty and successful, which is what Leonard needs. Amy should realize Sheldon is a craptastic boyfriend though, and go find someone else.

I almost died when I found out that Leslie Winkel was in Roseanne.
I agree with the pretty and successful -- I just didn't like the way she wanted to change him; what he wore, his glasses for contacts, who he was friends with, etc. She was really bothered by his continuing friendship with Penny, and that kind of jealousy bothers me.

Also, it really played into why they broke up, and kind of gave Penny the upper hand.

I'd like to see Leonard find someone new, really fall for her, and say to Penny, 'Look, you had your chance with me, and you didn't want what I had to offer, so I've moved on. We can be friends, but not close friends, so stop coming into our apartment without knocking, and assuming I'll help you out of jams.'

  • BBT is like every day at my office. It's kinda priceless.

One of the guys (who is coincidentally Indian) said yesterday that his favourite 'happy song' is So Long, Farewell from The Sound of Music. Total Raj moment haha

  • I haven't watched any of the new season but have the first 6 on DVD. So all I can contribute to this thread is... BAZINGA!! :)

One of my favorite lines ever is when Sheldon says "I've always wanted to go to a goth night club... BAZINGA."

    That's all.

  • I work with a guy who is much like Sheldon... with fewer social skills. No joke. It's painful interacting with him, and even the boss likes to playfully rib him about his neuroses. I couldn't imagine living with or having a relationship with someone like that. It's bad enough that FI is a weird combination between Howard and Leonard. lol

  • I actually really like Penny's interactions with Sheldon. I always thought it was hilarious when she did things like spike his drinks. I have always loved Kaley Cuoco as an actress since 8 Simple Rules. I'm really glad she made a comeback. I don't really know what's going on this season, it is nowhere near as good as previous ones have been. That being said, I am constantly exposed to reruns and watch a lot more of them than the current which only airs once a week, so they are probably more prevalent in my memory. I actually think I missed the part where she left the restaurant so I don't really get her not having a job.

Leonard is super sweet and funny, but I don't know if he will end up with Penny. I would be pretty surprised if they introduced a character he cared for more, though.

But he's the first person she ever found.  So while it's not a perfect relationship it's more than she's ever had.

I think that how you relate to Sheldon's character depends on if you believe he has Asperger's Syndrome or not.  The producers of the show have said that he does not.  Of course it would' t be funny if they were making fun of someone on the spectrum but it is funny if he's just quirky.   However, I read an article that stated the actor believes that Sheldon does have Asperger's and plays him that way.  I have to say he gives a pretty good portrayal of it and I personally believe the character has it.  So coming from that perspective I don't expect him to be nicer to his friends, make new friends, or have a more involved relationship with Amy.

  • Oh yeah he is definitely ASD. I can see why the show wouldn't want to explicitly say that, but it's pretty damn clear.

  • Their chemistry as friends and bachelors was amazing. It's hard to keep it interesting now that they're paired off (except Raj). I think it's any longstanding series' challenge to grow the characters and keep them interesting and likeable. No one stays in college mode forever!

I agree that a new, serious love interest for Leonard would be interesting. And more guest stars like Neil Degrasse Tyson!
  • I am married to Leonard's clone.  Ackkkkk!
My son is one of these guys, too.
DH likes to watch to see Penney.  Nerdness likes blonds.  He was disappointed to see her on a talk show recently, and discovered that the actress is a lot like her character.
Son refuses to watch.  He is insulted by the stereotypes, which are so true for him.

I think the character of Amy added a lot to the series.  Sheldon is not believable.  Maybe they can soften his character a little.

It's possible though. People on the spectrum are capable of love too- it's just harder and takes a lot more work.  They've got 3 more years for him to figure it out. I think Amy is a great influence on him in that way.

  • I've loved Penny's interaction with Sheldon.  They play off each other very well.  I thought this season would have her growing more because she was going to finish college.  Last night's episode and where Leonard wouldn't say yes to her proposal makes me think that they don't end up together. I did like how Stuart described them, though.

Yes, it's possible but I don't expect so it makes watching any kind of growth in the character more special.  Just as it would in a person who actually was on the spectrum.  I look at it from the point of view of "wow, it's great you can do that" as opposed to "what is wrong with you that you act that way?"

I love this show, however what has really irked me a lot lately are the jokes about Stuart.  I find it really irritating that the other characters don't include him in many activities, and when they do he gets the part that no one else would take (i.e. [SPOILER ALERT] playing the murdered guy at the party). Oh, and I really find it annoying when the other characters seem to ignore his suicidal comments.  If someone you know and are at least friendly with IRL starts saying things about wanting to kill themselves, you don't just ignore them! And I wanted to cry at the end of last night's episode where he was the only one who showed up!

Also I agree with PP that Penny needs to be taken out of the poor but pretty girl rut and actually make something of herself, and that Raj needs a steady girlfriend.

EDIT: because words are failing me without enough coffee.

  • I'm late to the thread but... I hate what they did to Penny. She used to be sweet. I get the development but it still sucks. I think they are making her bitter because of where her life is. I love Sheldon and Leonard. I think the show needs both of them to survive. If either of them leave the show is done for, I know I wouldn't watch if either of them or Penny left. Those three are huge core of the show.
  • Just now logged into TK.  Sorry I missed this thread.

I agree Penny needs character development, but I think they are going about it the wrong way.  She has made me cringe all season.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

One hundred percent agreed on Penny. I feel like all of the characters except for Howard and Bernadette really have received no meaningful development; they just get put in funny/awkward/just plain mean situations to entertain for a few minutes, but nothing ever happens to change them in the long run.

I almost think Raj and Penny need to get together so she will soften up some and he will grow a backbone. They each seem to have an excess of a trait that the other needs. Leonard needs a new GF for sure.

Why all the hate on Mayim? Links to her blog/other resources 'cause I'm lazy? 0:)

ETA, because I swear I can speak English but my phone apparently can't
