Board Game Theme Ideas

Hey guys!
It's been a while since I've posted (and I've never posted on this particular board), so I figured I'd do another "getting to know you" along with my post.
But first… Do any of you have any board game theme ideas?
We have already planned out our save the dates and invites. We'll be using customized Arkham horror character cards for the save the dates and a customized Ticket to Ride map for our invites (but ALSO cut as a 54 piece puzzle).
We would like to incorporate meeples and dice also, but don't have any concrete ideas for the reception itself.
Any ideas?

    Arkham Horror Character Card
(We're having a small wedding, so it would be personalized for each person)

Ticket to Ride Map - Due to the fact that both of our families are spread all over the United States, EVERYONE will have to travel.
  • OK!  I hate theme weddings.
Now that I've got that off my chest, daughter threw in a few nods to gamers.  She found a place online that made custom gamers' dice with their first names on one of the faces.  Those were her favors.  I told her she would have to pay for them.  She had a groom's cake made with a photo of Dungeons and Dragons on top.  The gamer people thought it was cool.  The rest of us were clueless.  She paid for that, too.
Sorry, but I like traditional weddings.

  • You could have meeple gingerbread cookies (or any kind of cookies) as favors. And you can do table names with various board games instead of numbers. Maybe do each centerpiece with parts of the game.

I'm debating getting an inflatable D20 to have people roll for us to kiss instead of clinking glasses....not sure if it will work in real life though.

  • I love your theme, good luck with it!
  • Jenga pieces could work really well and you can paint them to have any theme/names on them. Maybe they could be used as escort cards, or you can leave them blank for people to play/sign with well wishes as a unique guestbook keepsake for you and FI to play at home.
  • Did I read correctly that your invitation is a puzzle?
  • Yes!  Most everyone we are inviting would really appreciate it too (instead of being like, "WHYYYY???").
  • Neat!  Thanks for the neat idea! :)
  • OMG I love that D20 idea! That's so fun!
  • Sorry you don't like theme weddings!  Our wedding will be in a very traditional venue with very, very nice food and pretty flowers and a nice color theme… And that's very us… But board games are very us and it's completely possible to maintain an awesome color scheme with game pieces (sort of like you can keep colors going with candy bars).
Just because everything won't be "traditional" doesn't mean it won't be classy. ;)
  • Will people know that your puzzle is an invitation? I love board games as much as the next gal but if I got a puzzle in the mail it would go right into the trash.

  • Oh, yes. :) We'd provide additional information with the puzzle.
  • Am I the only one who is wondering what the hell a meeple is?

I had to google it. We still have Agricola in the plastic wrap

Strictly a personal opinion.  You aren't violating any etiquette rules.  Enjoy your wedding.

  • FI and I love board games, too! If you're hosting drinks, you could have a list of 20 drinks and a D20 up there for people who want to leave their choice to chance. You could also do some fun things with photo booth backdrops.

One of FI's friends had a wedding where each table was a different board game (themed in decor and also the board game was there for entertainment), and they chose games according to peoples' tabletop experience (e.g. non-gamers were given something like Candyland whereas others had Pandemic, Catan, etc).

Have fun!  Sounds like an awesome party :-)
  • Oh I like the D20 drink idea!  We *are* hosting an open bar, so that might be fun to do!
    :)
