Addressing STD/invite questions

I have seen bits and pieces of address etiquette but I'm having a hard time trying to compile answers to all of my particular questions. To clarify, this is for writing the address on the envelope, I think I've got proper invite wording under control.

I know for invites you shouldn't use abbreviations for road, street, etc. Is this the same for STD, or can they contain abbreviations since they are less formal?

Also, should they be addressed to people's full proper name or are nicknames ok?

Finally, married couples who do not have the same last name? How would that be formatted?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Addressing STD/invite questions

  • 1. Address the STDates (and invites) as clearly as possible to avoid confusing the USPS, which is apt to get it wrong anyway.

    2. Address people, always, by their preferred name; I.e., 'Tim' for 'Timothy' if that's how they go by.

    3. Mr. Brad Pitt and Mrs. (or Ms.) Angelina Jolie. 'And' signifies married.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
