Just Engaged and Proposals

Engaged to a med student or doctor? Let's be friends!!!

Hi!! I'm Amanda and my FI is a 1st year med student.  We have been together since high school and I am super excited that we are finally getting married. However, none of my friends are in a relationship with a medical professional which is really something you can't understand unless you're in it! Are any of my fellow knotties engaged to a med student/doctor or are in med school?? Introduce yourself, I would love to talk to you! :)

P.S. Anyone in the Boston area??

Med school is a tough time, particularly to be in a relationship. Your fiancé has many stressful, difficult, busy days ahead of him; with obscenely long hours, trying situations, and extremely difficult exams. Residency in particular is going to be a very stressful time for him. I hope you're strapped in...it could be a rocky ride.

My fiancé is a specialty physician but he is (I'm guessing) significantly older than your FI (he is 33), so when I met him a few years ago he was just finishing his post-residency specialty training. So I wasn't around for the med school and residency craziness. He's employed at a great hospital and works with a team of doctors, so his hours are pretty normal and we actually have plenty of time to spend together (his specialty also lends itself to more sane hours than say, an ER doctor, a surgeon, or a cardiologist). So there's a light at the end of the tunnel...it's just going to take a while to get there.
  • My FI is 23 so I think he should be about the same age as your FI when he finishes residency/fellowship. It's really great to hear that you get to spend plenty of time together because right now my FI have to schedule every minute we spend together - I'm not kidding we have to schedule a 15 min lunch 1 week in advance.  However, it's funny that you mention cardiologist because that is what he wants to go into! What specialty is your FI doing?

He's an infectious disease specialist. Cardiology is an excellent career but because cardiologists deal with fatal emergencies on a regular basis (i.e. heart attacks and cardiac arrest), their hours are crazy and unpredictable. I'm sure your fiancé knows that already though.

My fiancé finished his fellowship by age 30, so if your fiancé studies hard, excels, and gets his ducks in a row, he could be done in 7-8 years instead of 10.
  • I will be starting med school come fall 2014 and We just made it official with the ring and whole proposal!! Congrats!

  • Congrats on the engagement and med school!! So exciting!!

  • Hi there! My name is Caroline, and I just got engaged four days ago on Christmas morning! :) My fiance and I started dating two years ago in his 4th year of medical school, and he is currently in his 2nd year of surgery residency. (We've got a long way to go!) We were thinking about getting married by the end of his 3rd year. Because of his crazy long hours, (lots of times he works from 6 AM to 10 PM every day with only 4 days off per month), I'm going to be doing most if not all of the wedding planning. I'll also be planning a long distance wedding, since we currently both live in Atlanta and would like to get married on the West Coast where we are both from. But I am so looking forward to the challenge! I know it can be tough sometimes especially since those in the medicine profession don't have a lot of time, but hang in there! My FI and I don't spend a lot of time together, but when we do, it just makes me appreciate him so much more. I just always live life one day at a time, and tell myself that one day, it'll all be worth it. :)
  • My fiance is in the first year of his three year residency. We've been together since our first year of college. I'd love to be your "medical widow" buddy!
  • @drmrs2014 I love the term "medical widow"!!! That describes it right on the money!!
  • My fiancé isn't in med school YET, but he might as well be. We're juniors in undergrad (also high school sweethearts!) and he's getting a double major in Chemistry and Biology with a minor in Physics, plus he has a part-time job, and a job shadowing internship. He's also getting ready for his MCAT right now.
  • I know this thread had been dormant for a while but wanted to add my two cents! i'm a fourth year medical student, awaiting match results (eek!) and i just got engaged two days ago!! So count me in this support group haha :)
  • Ay, I totally know how you feel! My fiancé is in his first year of medical school... We got engaged a couple months ago, and it quite sucks missing him. We won't be getting married until after he finishes though, for practical reasons, but when people hear that we're going to have a long engagement they nearly always have to make a comment! I'm not going into telling you about my entire life story and our relationship to explain why we've made this decision. sigh

So yeah, count me in here.

To all the med student and med student SO'S above, feel free to PM me anytime. I got married during my 4th year, after a two year engagement. Need advice, tips, or just to vent? Send me a message.
