Wedding band regret

My engagement ring has seven small diamonds on either side that taper and become smaller as they get towards the center stone. This leaves a right shape sort of like this =>O<= (photo attached)

When I got my wedding band I just got a straight line of diamonds the same size as the middle side diamond, so it's exactly 50% larger than the side diamond closest to the center stone, and 50% smaller than the largest side diamond.

But because my ring tapers, there's an itty bitty tiny gap between the engagement ring and wedding band right at the center. I'm starting to think I made a mistake and should have opted for a ring that has a bit of a peak in the center. Or maybe then it would have run into the prongs. I'm debating if I should go back to the jeweler to see if there is anything they can do to make the rings flush.

Re: Wedding band regret

  • Mine has a gap too but I don't mind. My e ring is a family heirloom, so there was no coordinating wedding band. So I just picked a wedding band I liked and called it a day. Not sure how long you've been married but why not wear it for a while and see if it grows on you? I can't imagine changing the ring we exchanged in our ceremony, but that's just me.
  • I'd have to see the rings together, but I think that given the tapering in your engagement ring, any straight band is going to have a gap. You'd almost have to get a band that reverse-tapered: --<=>-- to get it to sit flush.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • I'll post a photo of the ring with band tonight. We get married next month so it's not my band yet. I didn't even think about asking if they could taper it when we purchased the bands. They did show me a ring with a dip for the center stone, but that just accentuated the gap even further.

  • Is the gap going to bother you that much, or are you maybe just overthinking it?

I know that I overthought mine like crazy when we went to buy, and when I tried on ones that sat completely flush, I felt like they got lost in my engagement ring (I have a halo-style, though). I ended up actually liking having a gap in the end.

You might be overthinking it, honestly. I don't think anyone's gonna be staring at your hand going, "THERE'S A GAP, YOU GUYS COME LOOK AT THE GAP." If it bothers you, then it bothers you, but it just might be a thing you'll have to deal with if you can't find a ring that sits flush. You also might not like a ring that sits flush--it depends on how it looks with the band.

This also might sound weird, but the gap might end up being a quirk that you love.

  • I don't like the bent rings that fill the gap...when I'm old and living in a nursing home or what not, I wanted my wedding band to look good by itself and not look like it's missing the ering. Imho :)

  • I have a gap between mine.  The shape of the rings together is hard to describe.  The e-ring didn't have a matching wedding band so we had to pick something.  I ended up picking a band that actually accentuated the gap because I liked the look better.  However, if it's really something that will drive you up a wall, you could always go to the jeweler and see what the other options look like.  Who knows, you might end up liking the one you already purchased best but it might quell those "what ifs".
  • OK I'm overthinking it. I put the wedding band on and realized that it is all in my head. The gap is barely there. Thanks for your reassurance.

Sometimes, you just need reasssurance! There have been so many times I've entirely overthought a situation. One of my bridesmaids is an essential person in my life because she just gives me a look and I go, "I'm overthinking this, aren't I?"
