What size is sample size?

Hi Ladies,

There is a chance that I might need to buy an emergency dress (just a chance; trying not to panic yet).  I am having my dress made so I have not done the bridal shop thing at all.   What size is "sample" size at most boutiques (not DB)?

If I wear a street size 6, do you think there's a shot that I could scoop up a sample and get it hemmed?

Re: What size is sample size?

  • Street size 6 is pretty close to an 8-10 in Wedding dress sizes. Which is what a lot of sample size dresses are. I think you will be fine.

  • I agree that you should be fine.  I'm a street size 8 and most sample sizes fit me or where a little too small.  You might need to have it taken in a little bit, so make sure if you end up going this route that you leave yourself a little bit of time for alterations.

  • Thanks ladies.  I am hoping that this is just needless worry.  I am having a dress made.  So far, haven't seen it AT ALL except for a rough sketch and the fabric that I chose.  Today I was supposed to have my first fitting and the seamstress pushed it back to next week so I am getting just a bit nervous that I will be in a major crunch if I don't end up liking her work.  Scared!  But trying to stay calm.  That makes me feel better to know that sample size isn't like a 2 and it would be impossible to order a new one in time.
  • DB has almost every size in many different dress types (but not all of their styles are in-stock in every size or color).  The other salons I've seen have samples in sizes 8 or 10, and plus size samples around 18 or maybe 20.  I've also been to salons that have racks and racks of MANY designers of varying sizes, so the styles available at each size points are a bit limited, but you might could find something that would work at a big bridal store.

I hope your custom-made dress works out!  I would guess that the seamstress just needed some more time to put more finishing touches on it so it would be ready to fit to you.  This time of year things often get pushed back because of all of the spring illnesses that have delayed work until April.  Catch-up can be hard!!

<div>ughhhhhhhh I would absolutely be peeved if sample sizes were a size 0 or 2.. I would not feel comfortable ordering anything unless I tried it on and whatnot. So like PPs said, you'll be fineeee! and hopefully you'll fall in love with the newly made dress [: </div>

  • You'll be fine!  I'm a street size 6 and all of the samples I tried on were size 8 or 10 (mostly 10).  The 8s were a bit snug, but the 10s fit perfectly!

    Good luck!
  • I'm a street size 2 and there's only one sample that I've ever tried on that fit. It was a 0 that somehow got over my hips.

    You should be fine :)

Originally my dress was going to be custom made too but we're now less than 6 months out so I had felt the pressure and I decided to buy one. My best friend was the one who was going to make my dress but she needs to focus on schoolwork. She couldn't even start until mid-june which was not soon enough for me to feel comfortable for our October wedding.
  • Please post a pic when your dress is finished!  I'm curious to see it.  I'm sure everything will work out for you!

  • Ha, Breaness already knows this but I had major troubles with my custom-made dress (my dressmaker was a major procrastinator, and my dress wasn't finished a week before the wedding) so I bought an emergency dress ($99!) from DB just in case it didn't work out. They had my size (street size 4 or 6, I think the dress ended up being an 8?) available to try on, and I bought it off the rack, minimal alterations needed four days out. Earlier in the process when I tried on boutique dresses, the shops sometimes had my size, and and sometimes didn't. I don't think I would have fit in the samples without more serious alterations than just a hemming.

I ended up wearing my custom dress, but I was so glad I had a backup plan.
