This absolutely broke my heart, though: "After brain surgery in 2005, Konnie's first husband found her passed out on the floor. He decided he couldn't care for her anymore, and left her broke and homeless."
There was a heartwarming story after Hurricane Katrina about a couple who'd had their wedding planned for the Saturday before the storm and (obviously) had needed to postpone it. They evacuated to a shelter in Baton Rouge and when word got out as to what had happened (not advertised by them) there were a ton of vendors who volunteered their services. Thanks to the generosity of others, the couple was able to have their wedding a short time later.

It's things like this that make a person feel good that they've been able to help during an extremely stressful time.
