Looking for vacation ideas

First Anniversary 5 Love Its Name Dropper Combo Breaker
in Wedding Woes
DH and I are looking to take a long weekend just the two of us.  I'm thinking low key, good food and drink, maybe some ziplining and outdoor stuff.  Gambling woult be a bonus, but we don't really need a night club scene.  Something in the 6ish hour driving range from central Ohio.  My initial thought was Finger Lake region of New York or Put in Bay.

    We've done Pittsburgh.  That's a good link Nola.  I did have Branson and Wisconsin Dells in my mind.

    WE CAN DRINK SCOTCH TOGETHER.  Maybe our husbands will like each other or something and they can be DDs.  Or not, who really cares about them when you're so close?  :D

    Branson just got a boost on the chart.  It sounds like a good place, but is it really?

    If you can wait until summer-time, I highly recommend the Lake Michigan coast of Michigan.  The Petosky region up north is great.  Also, Indian River/Burt Lake.

    Also, the town of Ann Arbor, MI is so cool and is a great weekend destination.  There are many FABULOUS restaurants there. Ann Arbor really isn't a whore, despite what you've heard all of your life.  ;)

    What about Chicago?

    Nashville is possible.  MI crossed my mind. I think Chicago is more urban than we want to do right now.  We kind of just want to get drunk and screw ahem reconnect;)

    Pittsburgh 9 years ago =/= Pittsburgh of today - a lot has changed. (there's a casino, for one, and Kuus can take you guys to Gullifty's for dessert)

    Have you been to Holland, MI? The tulip time festival is in the Spring, and I've heard wonderful things about it.

    Petosky is awesome.

    Harbor springs is also an awesome little place to weekend.
    The Soo is awesome in a very odd sort of way, but it's a PITA to drive to saulte ste. marie.  It's like you get to the bridge and go "yay, almost there" and then have 3 more hours (5+ if you get stuck going to Drummond where my ext. family lives)

    On that front, Mackinac is awesomely fun too, IMO.  Just don't advertise you're a fudgie :)

    6, St. Louis is actually a pretty cool city.  There are great museums, wonderful wonderful restaurants and a really great nightlife as well as riverboat gambling.

    i Remember getting stuck for a very short period on the way to the top of the St. Louis arch.
    With my claustrophobic father.

    do not recommend the stuck part, but I remember thinking the inside was really cool

    Oh dear, GBCK.

    When we went to the arch, I went with my aunt, uncle, and cousin.  My cousin was insisting at the time that she was having previous lifetime memories, including going to the arch.  I asked her what things looked like.  She said the river just looks like a little line in the window.  Yeah, the windows on the river side are completely filled with the river view.  I told her that it really didn't look like a little line, was she sure she was remembering right?  She didn't speak to me for awhile after that.  Ah, teenage memories.  :)

    I agree with the bolded. We did a family trip to MI when I was in HS and stayed in the Petosky area - rented a house for a week. Mackinac was my favorite part of the trip (sooooo much awesome fudge!) We also went to see the giant Paul Bunyan statue on the UP.  Make sure to get some St. Julian wine - the Blue Heron is awesome.

    MI's wine stuff has taken off the last few years--we actually have an awesome climate for it (especially toward the north--aim for "fruitport" and you'll be in wine country) in certain areas.

    Leelenau cellars = some of my faves.

    And starting about now, there are awesome festivals and stuff, depending on where you're at, basically through the end of the summer.
    (the Science fest is at MSU this week/weekend!  huzzah!)

    Mackinac Island is  8 hrs. It's a little far for a weekend.  St. Louis is 7 I might add that.
