NWR: Hosting a party and Trash/Recycling/Composting

So I'm pretty big into recycling and composting.  It's pretty important in my life.

I also enjoy having parties at my place in the summer.  

Would you roll your eyes or be annoyed if I had different bins for trash/recycling/composting?  Would you get annoyed if you had to separate?  Should I just consider it a losing battle when I have other people around?  

I'm not one to push my choices onto others, but there is typically a decent amount of trash involved when you feed 40 some people and considering all of the bottles/cans from the beer and wine.

    We always have a separate bin for cans/bottles at family parties and no one bats an eye.  I wouldn't have an issue with it as long as it was clear which was which.

    I don't think this is a big deal. Just clearly label which can is for which, and I think most people will do their best to do it.

    I always ask when I'm at someone's house if they recycle before I throw anything away. I realize not everyone does that, but I think separate, labeled bins would be awesome because then I wouldn't have to ask.

    We always have a clearly labeled recycle bin next to the trash and for the most part people see it and use it. 

    Composting might be a new concept for people.  If you have another bin clearly labeled "food scraps" or something people will probably get it.

      Should I just consider it a losing battle when I have other people around?   I think you should be realistic that you will not get 100% compliance.

       











    What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

    If you have separate, labelled, bins, I will love you forever, and I will gladly separate my refuse and put it in the right bin.

    I always ask people, 'Do you recycle?' 'Do you compost?' and then if they do, I put the stuff where they need me to.

    I would definitely try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and label the bins correctly and I would not get mad at anyone if they didn't put something in the correct bin.

    I just want to make sure that it's not rude to do it.

    I agree, if all three bins are labelled your good to go! Also I find it so awesome that you compost.  I currently rent and have no place to put my compost :/ but alas, I recycle every little thing that I can.

    I live in a small condo in the city and I have two different composting systems. 

    Vermicompost (worms), which I've been doing for two years.  
    Bokashi (fermenting), I just started about a month ago. 

    Both kinds can be done indoors and you do not need a ton of space.  Under a sink works!
