What color shirt and pants for groom?

Color opinions, please! We got his sportcoat last weekend.

I think it's a silk/linen blend and it's a grey and white herringbone that comes off as grey/silver. Closest I could find is http://www.josbank.com/menswear/shop/Product_11001_10050_392071

I think his pants need to be a khaki/brown/tan color, or would grey work? For his shirt, I think ivory would be better than white but I'm not sure if it matters. I was thinking French cuff (for fun, so I could get him some cufflinks) but it's hard to find ivory French cuff shirts that look nice apparently.

The whole thing is sort of semi-formal in an old tavern built around 1800, my dress is a Colonial Robe Anglaise, so it's kind of an odd level of dressiness we want to match. Any suggestions?

Re: What color shirt and pants for groom?

  • For some reason the sports coat link isn't working for me.  But I would go with a white shirt.  Ivory tends to look dirty.  And white shirts are always a classic look.  For pants, since I can't see the picture it is hard for me to comment, but I think the best thing to do is to take the jacket with you when your FI goes to try some pants on.  This way you can see what will work best with the jacket.

  • Thanks! I guess we can wait till we get the jacket back. Maybe something he already has will work.
For reference, since the other link doesn't work, this isn't it but it's the closest color I found: http://media.wwd.com/images/processed/wwd/2010/08/16/landscape/01-large/canali.jpg

  • Well with that jacket you could either go dark with a nice pair of black pants or light with a nice tan. I wouldn't go grey (unless it was more like charcoal) because trying to get the colors to match would be hard.

Navy pants, white or light blue shirt is a classic look.

  • I'd do black pants, white shirt, blue tie- not matching your blue, just something nice. I would not do tan/brown/kaki with gray.
  • I like the idea of Navy or Black. But based on the color and fabric of your dress, I'm putting in my vote for him to wear jacket with black pants, white shirt & then a fun tie. I think the black pants will help go with the formality of the fabric of your dress.

  • @CMGragain I hadn't thought of navy pants or a blue shirt, that might look nice, thanks!

@STARMOON44 @Erikan73 Thanks, I will also make sure to have him try black pants and see how that looks!
