What are everyone's thoughts on tanning?   Has anyone done a spray tan? Do they work?   Will they come off on a white wedding dress?

When I originally ordered my dress I was tan and ordered it in white as it looked great against my skin. Well winter hit and I'm just one pink shade above ghost white.   It doesn't look horrible, but I'd rather not blend into my dress.   Because I've started electrolysis treatments, it's not recommended to go tanning (although for a wedding it can be done just schedule appointments around tanning), so I was thinking of spray tan. However, I've never tried it and am worried that 1) It'll make me orange and 2) It'll come off on my dress.

Anyone have experience spray tanning? Any help or recommendations on it?   Thanks!

My friend swears by spray tans. She actually does airbrush tanning where a person sprays you using an airbrush rather then standing in a booth that sprays you. She has never looked orange. As for if it comes off on clothing that is something that you just need to try out before your wedding. I would look on Yelp for reviews of salons around you and see what others have to say. Then go and talk to the salon and see what they have to offer and get information about their spray tans. Then get one and see how to wears on you with not only the color but if it easily streaks or rubs off over the next few days.

Please go spray tan, and not booth tanning. I've never done it (proud to be a pasty!!), but I believe if you exfoliate very well, it's less likely to rub off. I'd try it out before though several times, to make sure you know about it

I feel like my spray tan does not rub off after the first 24 hours have passed, but I can't be positive. Also a consideration is tanning lotion that you should apply for a week up until your wedding - I know loreal has a kind that does not rub off onto clothes. I use the Loreal Sublime Bronze tinted self tanning lotion in medium natural tan color, and it has been great on my pale skin (it shows up in 1 hr).

I've used spray tans a few times, am naturally fair skinned, and have not come out looking orange. I used the Mystic Tan at Sun Tan City. Exoliate REALLY REALLY REALLY good before you go. You want all of your dead skin off. Also, shower the day you go and as close to the actual time you go as possible. It is recommended not to shower for 6 hours after. I usually look kind of orange right after I go so I try to go in the evening after work and either shower late that night or the next morning. I also suggest doing it 3 days before the wedding. (So, if your wedding is Saturday, I would go Thursday). This will help it not rub off on your dress and blend to a more natural look for you.

I love the color I get from the spray tan, but I do the airbrush one. It does come off on your clothes though! I would say you can do it 2 days before if you dont want it on your clothes, the color will have faded but still be there, just make sure not to scrub when you shower. lol

I've never spray-tanned, but I've heard good things and bad things about it.

I would never, ever, EVER tan in a tanning bed, especially just for a wedding. No day is worth that cancer risk.

I use to tan because I worked in a tanning salon and could do it for free. I ended up having to have 2 moles removed because of it. Definitely not worth it. I don't tan in tanning beds any more. I have gotten spray tans and they are great. The color looks natural and doesn't rub off on clothing. Mine last a while also. I plan on doing this for my wedding. They do usually recommend laying in a tanning bed for about 5 minutes before you spray tan because its suppose to open your pores and make your spray tan last longer. IDK if that's true, but thats what the salon I worked at recommended and I've had other salons recommend that as well when I get a spray tan.

I'm a ginger so I'm really really pale. (i have to wear sunscreen daily) I tan okay, but dark tans look really bad on me. I'm terrified of spray tans. A few times I got this jergens tanning lotion and it didn't get all over my clothes and it was pretty diluted with real lotion so it didn't leave streaks or anything. It gave me a pretty glow, but it didn't look unnatural. For my wedding I will probably hit the tanning booth a few times just to get rid of the pastiness. I am very against tanning booths because they are so bad for you, but I can make an exception and go like twice for a wedding!

Also, whatever you do, make sure you do several test runs.

I spray tanned once in a booth and it looked great. Rubbed off the first night, but not after that. I would do it again, just haven't felt like spending the money.

Self tanning lotions - any good recommendations? I've heard good things about the Jergens that you mention, @larrygaga. Has anyone used St. Tropez self tan bronzing moose, Coppertone gradual tan lotion, or Fake Bake Flawless? All get good reviews online, but I'd love to hear some first-hand opinions.

I'm also interested in what some good self-tanning lotions would be. I've always been afraid they would give uneven results, and how do you get it on your back? Do you just tan certain parts of your body? Too many questions lol.

@Niccirf - I just bought Tanwise through Sally Beauty. It is only like $10 and has some really good reviews. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet (probably will this weekend) but I will let you know how it works out. Also, I think with any tanning lotion, exfoliating is really important as well as letting it dry completely before putting on any clothes and such and waiting 24 hours before showering/working out to give the color time to set in. @rachelsea53 - I am just going to try it on my legs first, but if I want to do my whole body then I will probably just ask H to apply it for me (with gloves so he doesn't end up with weird colored palms) so that way it won't end up streaky or weird because I missed a spot.

I've used the Jergens one, and it's pretty good. I also use the facial version daily as my moisturizer and I've never turned orange. It has SPF in it too, so it's a pretty good one

I like the Jergens daily lotion, and if I want to look really tan, I prefer a spray. Banana Boat and Victoria's Secret both make good ones. Much easier to get your own back that way.

I spray tanned before my brother's wedding. I exfoliated before and did the Mystic Tan booth and I liked it. I forgot to spin at my waist but it still turned out great and lasted a long time. The stuff did rub a little on the clothes I wore that day, but it didn't affect how the tan looked. And it didn't turn out orange at all. I did like level 3 or something like that (I don't know what exactly it was called). I'm thinking I might do Mystic again before our wedding, but I might not need to since we have a pool that we'll be in all summer.

When I used to work in the cosmetics industry, everyone I knew who was also in the business loved the Clarins tanning milk. Pricy, but it worked for all of us. I am very fair skinned for an Asian girl (yellow undertones and very visible blue-green veins), and the Clarins never made me orange.

I recently asked about tanning so if you search for that thread you can see what the ladies said about it. I've never had a problem with spray tans staining my clothing, but I've been disappointed by how fast they wear off. Even if I exfoliate like crazy they seem to be gone within 3 days.

I'm very pale. Like, I'm clear. At first, I thought about getting a spray tan for the wedding. But you know what? I'm never tan. I want to look myself on my wedding day, not a weird tan version of myself.

And please, please don't tan in a bed. It's so dangerous.

I've had many spray tans. I've done my own with easy to find products at the store, had a person spray me, and gone to At the Beach for the machine that sprays. My best results were from At the Beach. I did spend extra money on a lotion they sell that is used in the Versa Spa (tanning machine). My only complaint was that sometimes my hands looked uneven if I didn't use enough of the color block on them. I liked that still better than having a person spray me, because I don't like getting undressed completely with another person around. In the machine, I got completely undressed and had no tan lines.

My thoughts on tanning is that it is stupid and sad. I wish people would accept skin tones of all colours and accept their beauty and uniqueness.

If you don't like tanning, don't do it. I feel ok with my skin tone, but I also enjoy having a tan. It's no different than playing around with make up styles.

I never said beauty doesn't come in many forms. If a dark skin person wants to do that, well that's on him or her. I wouldn't put bleach on my skin, but that's my choice. I do make the choice to get spray tans. I am an adult, and I can if I want to. If you have beautiful skin and you love it as it is, don't change it. I just don't understand saying someone else's choice is stupid just because it's not your choice.

A lot of people do it to get rid of pastiness, not to change skin color.

Very true. My former boot camp trainer had very dark skin, and she said she liked getting a little tan in the summer because of the glow she felt it gave her skin.
