Promotions

Hey ladies! Hopefully everyone is doing well!

So, I wanted to know about how to get promoted. I am so frustrated at this point.

This has been going on 1.5 years, for the same promotion.

Promotion 1: I was not given a interview because I was too new, but they hired on someone who was currently working at blockbuster (non-management)

1 year later

Promotion 2: I was given an interview, told that I basically had it in the bag and then did not get the position. I asked what I could do in the future to make myself a better candidate. They said nothing, that my schedule didn't fit. The guy they hired was a position below mine and he is only available 3 hours a week.

I learned more to make myself competitive. I improved to become a top cashier and learned the service desk and the department that would be a promotion. I got my license for heavy machinery consistently used in the department.

Then, three part time positions opened up. I jumped on it, telling the coordinator, the assistant manager, and the supervisor that i was interested. I got everything together and waited. I mentioned it regularly to management and watched as management approached other associates and asked if they were interested. Watched as they got interviews. Then tonight, i inquired about my own interview and was told that interviews were over.

Idk what i could have done differently! :( what do I need to do to make myself competitive? They have offered me placement in positions on the same level, but I have always made it clear that up was my interest. This is by no means a permanent job, but I is just frustrating that I can't move up!

Re: Promotions

  • What type of position/job is this?  Unfortunately there are a lot of "politics" with any position that can get you promotions.

A lot of it comes down to personality for different jobs.  My first job out of college - I kept trying to get promoted and it never happened.  In one case my credentials were much better, but management got along better with the other candidate.  I kept trying for various positions within the department and found out basically 'I was too good at my job' - I was one of the top 3 performers closing out most of my cases and in the end that's what hurt me because it would *hurt* their numbers too much to promote me out of my position.  I left the department.

Since I left that job, I can honestly tell you I have not been hired for my skill set (other than I show a willingness to learn) it's all been about my personality and being like-able and easy going.

When I WAS in college, I had a couple different jobs (cashier mostly).  One was at an office supply store and the other was at a grocery store.  In both cases the 'general' manager did not particularly like me because I was a college student (neither of them had completed college) but because of my 'status' it was obvious I was not a 'lifer' at the job.

Not sure what your situation is or if any of this was helpful.

  • I haven't got great advice, but just wanted to send you some hugs! That sucks. I think what @Dignity100 said about not being a "lifer" might be applicable here. You're graduating at the end of this year, if I remember correctly, so they probably are thinking of the investment they'd make in training you for the position just to lose you by 2015. Which absolutely sucks! But that may or may not be their thinking.

Couple points I agree with @dignity100 about, the most "positive" being that sometimes if you're too good and valuable at your current job, it's not worth it to them to promote you. Also, you admitted yourself that this isn't a career job, and they might sense that.

The unfortunate negative possibilities - personality. You might be well trained and know everything, but if you butt heads with people, or just have a different feel about you than the people at this higher level do, they won't even give you a chance (which is possible after they've interviewed you twice, denied a third time - they feel like they know enough to dismiss you). Also, in addition to learning things before you're required to (kudos!) do you do more than you're asked? Called in to work more hours or go to outside functions? Doing more than you're asked within your normal responsibilities (within reason) gives major brownie points.

FWIW, if this isn't a long term place you see yourself at...it's always easier to find a job when you have a job /shrug

  • Sending you lots of hugs. I know it's so frustrating to see people who are less qualified get ahead. I was in the same situation for a long time. Unfortunately like PPs have said, politics has a lot to do with who gets promoted. It stinks and it's not fair, but there's not much that can be done about it. FWIW, I think you've done the right things.

Without knowing exactly what it is that you do, I'd say it may be time to start looking for a new job.

  • @Dignity100, thanks for sharing. It is a bit like that, the second time I was denied the promotion, I was told I was too valuable to lose in my department. This is a retail store. @CloGreenEyes, Thanks for the hugs!!! it is quite possible. I had to move my graduation out an extra semester, but it is frustrating because the managers have gotten with me and are planning a "road map" to me eventually becoming a store manager. They think I have great potential. I am to polite to say that this is not what I want to do for the rest of my life @Moiramab, FI and I discussed it a bit last night. He thinks it is time to look for a new position. I may end up putting in my application at the end of my classes this semester at a competing company. For my sanity, it may be worth it. Thanks! This does make me feel a little better. One thing I suppose I could improve on is going out drinking when I'm invited to get in closer with management. Money is just so tight, lol!
  • @psychbabe314 I worked at subway one summer between my soph and junior years of college. My boss was legitimately beside himself when I told him I wasn't staying to be assistant manager but rather was going to complete my degree in biochemistry. It was awkward.

Oh and you can totally go out drinking and get water. Or Shirley temples. I'm a cheapskate and a lightweight. It can be done.
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton
  • Thanks @Blue & White
  • @psychbabe314 Good luck! It's a hard decision to be sure, but glad that FI is supporting you. I also second blue, go to socialize, don't feel like a party pooper with water or soda :) (and you might get that for free!)

  • Might have to do that :-)
