Re: place card question

  • Are you using the place cards to denote what meal they chose for your servers?  If so, each person should get their own place card.  For example I went to a wedding where the blue place card meant that person got chicken while the orange place card meant that person got salmon.

  • First, make sure you know the difference between place cards (which are placed on the table for assigned seating) and escort cards, which show someone what table they will be seated at.

Place cards are most always only done individually. It is more difficult to mark a couples place at the table.

Some people do both place cards and escort cards. If you do, you would be designating exactly the chair your guests sit in, and the meal selection should be included on the place card. This means your escort card can be by couple.

Some do only escort cards- which can be by couple if you want- unless you need to designate a plated meal choice- then it would need to be individually. When it is a plated meal- a seating chart can take its place only if there will be place cards at the table showing the meal selection

Some do a seating chart and place cards.

Some do just a seating chart (when the meal is buffet style and you don't care about the exact seats your guests sit in, so long as they are at the appropriate table)

Some incorporate favors with the escort cards. or you can place favors at each seat with the place cards.

Important to think about- if you are doing favors, will the favors be by the couple, or individual?

If Individual- and you want to make sure guests only get the amount of favors you intended- you will need to have either individual escort cards, or individual place cards to pair them with.

If by couple, you should consider doing a favor/escort card combo by couple. If you also have a plated meal selection- you will need to do place cards in addition to the escort cards. The place cards will be at the table, indicated each individuals seat and meal selection.
  • I did an escort card per person.  I know the young kids got a kick out of having their own cards.  (Main reason was to ensure only invited guests came into the reception ballroom.)

  • We did our place cards by individual or couple (couple would include a guest with their plus one).   In the case of families the parents would get one and each kid would get their own.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I am doing individual escort cards (that denote table number, not specific seating). Our day of coordinator suggested that we could also do them by couple, i.e. "Mr and Mrs Smith." If you're doing a plated meal, you'll need to denote meal selection so that the servers can see it. I'm not sure how doing it on the back of the card would work, exactly. We will have "C" "B" or "V" on each card so that the servers will know for service.
