NWR: so frustrated

Today is a "paid vacation day" at work/school. I'm a PhD student in a research lab so I can't always take off holidays because it screws up experiments. I commute an hour each way, so I try to avoid coming in on weekends and holidays to save gas. I came in today to set up some experiments because having Monday time points works best for me. I prepared everything in my lab, including unthawing samples that can not be re-frozen and will be difficult to replace, then went across the street to the facility where the equipment I need is housed. I've used the facility before on the weekends with no problems. All the doors are key access only on the weekends. I get into the building fine, and get in the freight elevator (because I have bio hazardous samples with me I can't use the passenger elevator). My card key didn't work on the freight elevator, the doors wouldn't open, and then the elevator started to move. I started to freak out, but the doors finally opened on a floor I'm not supposed to have access to. I don't want to get back into the freight elevator, so I find the stairs go back to the ground floor. I decide to ignore the rules, because my bio hazardous samples are triple sealed, and take the passenger elevator. I get to the facility door and my access card isn't working. I can't get into the facility and the after hours emergency contact person in not answering their phone. Building security can't let me in without authorization from the person who won't answer their phone. I am supposed to have 24/7 access this facility. I have wasted my entire morning, 7L of gas (at $1.51/L) and precious samples because somebody put the facility in lockdown and the emergency contact won't answer their phone, ARGH!

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • Gross, I'm sorry. Let us know how this turns out! Mondays are the actual worst.

  • Same thing happened to FI over the summer, only he was supposed to be checking on the mice after surgery and gathering samples that day. He was so angry. My very quiet, often timid FI, raised hell because they put his research at jeopardy.

  • Update - I contacted my boss after 30 minutes, then left the lab 30 minutes after that. I didn't hear bAck from my boss until I got home. He actually called the facility director on his personal cell phone to complain. Facility director started calling the staff that were supposed to be in the facility this morning. One of them Got back to me an hour later and said if I came back, they could let me in. I had already decontaminated my samples so there was no point in me driving in again. They have no idea what the problem with the key card system was, but it happened to several other people today, and has happened before. I have to post pone my experiment 1 week (which is a huge deal) Boss has to raise hell tomorrow because this is completely unacceptable. No idea why emergency contact person wasn't responding.

  • On my last cruise, the ship was scheduled to leave Honalulu at 6:00PM on a Sunday.  Turns out the necessary dockworkers (unionized) forgot to check the schedule and went home.  While the ship had the ability to disembark, they were unable to do so because union rules said that the required number of longshoremen had to be present.  We all could have spent the evening in Honalulu if we had known!  We were stuck in the harbor until after midnight when the port director telephoned the required workers and persuaded them to return to their work!  I would have loved four more hours in town!  Grrr!
