So I finally got around to watching Frozen yesterday while hanging out with my friend's two year old daughter. After all the hype and crazy excitement, especially from other adults, I expected the greatest Disney movie ever. It was good, but I really don't get all the excitement. I still think Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast win. Am I missing something here?

Re: NWR- can someone please explain Frozen

  • For me a lot of it is the musical casting..I mean Idina is the QUEEN of amazingness.. and I have a sister who is three years my junior and something about "protecting" her struck a chord with me. Its just hard to explain. I resonated with me emotionally.

  • For me, it was the visual beauty with all of the ice and sparkles. I also love Nordic design.

I really liked Olaf and Sven too, they added some fun comedy to the movie. "I don't have a skull...or bones." "Quick, grab my butt!"

  • I liked the mother-daughter plot of Brave (and the complete lack of any romance) better than the sisters' 'true love' in Frozen, but I still cried my eyes out watching the latter. "Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?" just broke me, and still does after seeing the movie a couple times. Olaf's level of silliness should have been dumb, but I do find it funny, though I think Cristoff's voicing of Sven was genius and hilarious.

And yeah, the music. Though I admit I love singing "Let it Go," I can't stand how many people have posted videos of them/their kids singing it. I do it in private, knowing that only maybe .001% of the population actually have the pipes for it like Idina (I mean, it was written specifically with her fucking ridiculous range in mind). Lately I've had one of the parody versions stuck in my head, though. ("Here I Go--Despair of an Alto" very NSFW, by the way)

  • It's okay. I liked it, but people tend to overhype things. I didn't think the let it go song was that good, but probably because I hear it CONSTANTLY.

  • It could have done without a song or two. Too much song to movie ratio for me. And I love musicals. A few of the songs just seemed forced in there. Like the Fixer Upper song. Movie would have been fine or better without it. I still liked the movie though.
  • It's just a cute movie. I loved the characters and I loved the music - although I personally love Love Is an Open Door a LOT more than Let It Go. Just more fun IMO. But the story was lacking - you don't even know who the villain really is for like the first half of the movie! I don't totally get all the hype, but I admit I really liked it and will probably watch and quote it for years to come.

I loved it but I adore Idina Menzel and if she is in something I will watch it.

A little off topic but when this first came out I heard some people talk about how amazing Idina was and that they couldn't believe they had never heard of her, which whatever, however I laughed when one of my co-workers said her voice was so good she should be on Broadway.
LMAO. What did you say to the co-worker???

  • I love it because I think Idina is so incredibly talented and I also loved the visual effects with the ice and snow. Oh, and Olaf, but that's pretty much it :)

  • I really liked it for how independent and modern both Anna and Elsa were. For example, Anna in the song "For the First Time in Forever" has a few unladylike moments, but many modern women act like that (i.e. "Don't know if I'm elated or gassy, but I'm somewhere in that zone" is one of her lines).

I also really liked how Elsa starts out trying to be this ladylike role model ("Be the good girl you always have to be"), but in Let It Go, she is able to express herself freely without having to be that "good girl". There is also the way that she tells Anna that she can't marry a man that she just met, to add to what @lolo883 said.

And, if that doesn't convince you enough, well then have a good laugh with unnecessary censorship (CLICKY).

  • I just appreciate that Disney is now making princesses who seem like real people. Both in Tangled and now in Frozen the princesses are kind of clumsy, dorky and awkward. I mean, I love Cinderella, but I'm nothing like Cinderella. Dork Anah? I'm kinda like her.
  • Personally, I liked Tangled and Brave way more than Frozen. I think Frozen was way over hyped so by the time I saw it there was no way it was going to live up to how amazing everyone has been saying it is. I liked it but it wasn't as amazing as everyone said it would be. Also, think Merida in Brave is way more independent, strong, and in general awesome than Ana or Elsa - if I had a daughter I'd rather Merida be her role-model than Ana or Elsa.

I also like many of the classic Disney princess movies like The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast more than Frozen. Frozen was cute but way over-rated.

  • People love it for a few reasons!
    • The 'true love' between sisters.
    • Olaf!
    • Women save the day instead of men.
    • Idina Menzel. She's so talented.
    • Kristen Bell - who knew she could sing like that?

You mean turning into a full out sex bomb?  During "Let It Go" all I could think of was "Damn Elsa, you rock that form fitting, slit up to the thigh, dress."

I wasn't hugely impressed by the movie, but it was cute and the music/singing was great.  But I wasn't surprised that I wasn't blown away by it.

I have to agree with PP about the singing to movie ratio... it was a little much, but I do love that Disney made a movie that wasn't about living happily ever after with a husband and Olaf MADE the movie, imo.  However, nothing tops The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast for me.

  • I really enjoyed it but it was kind of just another Disney movie to me. I think it was a bit over-hyped and The Little Mermaid is still my favorite.

You are not alone! Didn't like it at all either. I love a good musical, and Kristen Bell, but it so didn't do anything for me.

That's ok, I think I'm the only one on the planet who hasn't even seen it yet. :) But man oh man if it isn't all that the mommy friends talk about.

    Nope, not just you.

I thought it was cute, but not the best Disney movie ever.  I was disappointed with the vocals.  I'm just not a fan of Idina Menzel at all.  I think she gets really thin and nasally when she starts to belt, and it just sounds horrid.  It's bad technique.  I like Demi Lovato's version of "Let it Go" much better.

I get that she is a big Broadway star, but there are a lot of contemporary Broadway stars that have some bad technique, lol.

I personally thought Brave was abetter movie.

Her range is pretty standard for a Mezzo-Soprano. . . but I'm a soprano so what do I know?! :-P

When you put it that way, I would definitely have to agree (and I almost spit out my coffee laughing at that!). I didn't get all of the hype either, and just thought it was good, but not great. But those were the points that I really did like (minus the sex bomb look), that women shouldn't hide who they really are, and shouldn't be afraid to be themselves. I still like most of the classic Disney movies better too, and the singing was very heavy for the movie.

same here! Demi Lovato's version is much better. I know Idina Menzel is a big Broadway star and I'm sure she's great at what she does...but that voice -_-  I'm just not a fan.  Brave and The Little Mermaid will always be my favorites.

Thats why FI and I watched it. All of our friends (most are parents) have been talking non-stop about how great it is. We were not impressed...kind wanted our hour and a half back.

I haven't seen it yet either. I wanted to, but it took forever for it to be rentable and while I'm sure it is now I lost interest. Overhyped movies tend to just be disappointing to me and I'm sure this would be the same. I'm glad I'm not the only one that isn't crazy about the song at least.

I love Idina Menzel but I understand where you are coming from because that is how I feel about Mariah Carey's voice. Idina is one of those artist who sounds better live better than when she is recorded, IMO. Of course I could be biased because Rent was the first show I saw on Broadway. Lol.

Oh God, she is awful too!  But in a different way, lol.
