NWR- can someone please explain Frozen

Re: NWR- can someone please explain Frozen

  • Am I the only one who hates the Little Mermaid? I feel like it has the worst message of all Disney movies. Seriously, give up her voice just to meet a guy? And leave all of her family behind for a guy she just met? It's ridiculous. If the genders were reversed, no one would find the story entertaining, but because it's a female who's doing the stupid stuff it's somehow romantic.

    Nope, not just you.

I thought it was cute, but not the best Disney movie ever.  I was disappointed with the vocals.  I'm just not a fan of Idina Menzel at all.  I think she gets really thin and nasally when she starts to belt, and it just sounds horrid.  It's bad technique.  I like Demi Lovato's version of "Let it Go" much better.

I get that she is a big Broadway star, but there are a lot of contemporary Broadway stars that have some bad technique, lol.

I personally thought Brave was abetter movie.
I love Idina Menzel but I understand where you are coming from because that is how I feel about Mariah Carey's voice. Idina is one of those artist who sounds better live better than when she is recorded, IMO. Of course I could be biased because Rent was the first show I saw on Broadway. Lol.
I hope you aren't including her Oscar performance in with that.  Because that was the first time I had heard "Let It Go" and the entire time I was thinking, "and she is supposed to be some amazing Broadway star?  She kind of sucks."

@maggie0829 YES. Same here. I had never heard of her or "Let It Go" and I thought her performance at the Oscars was cringe-worthy.  I'm not a musical expert but she sounded very flat and off key.

    That was, terribad.

I have heard her "live" on TV and on YouTube before, and in my opinion as a trained, amateur vocalist, she is not a great singer.  If she would stay in her lower range, where her strength seems to be, she'd be fine.  But for some reason she is cast into roles that require her to sing at the upper limits of her range, and it just all goes to hell at that point.

She becomes pitchy, shrill, and forced because she doesn't seem to know correct technique and doesn't support her voice at all.  She is heading down the road towards vocal nodes and surgery a la Adele due to her bad technique, if she hasn't already had them.

  • Confession: only time I had ever heard of/seen Idina Menzel before was as Rachel's birth mom on Glee. :-|

Now there were a few times on Glee where she sang with Lea Michelle that I thought she sounded lovely and they sounded lovely together!

    I'm not a total hater.

  • My daughter loves, loves, loves Olaf. That's her favorite character. When we first bought Frozen (DVD), we watched that movie for a week straight. I haven't gotten tired of yet but I love all the music in it.

I didn't see her Oscar performance. The only time I saw her live was when she was in Rent and she was incredible in that. That was... Eek almost 20 years ago.

Trust me, it was not Broadway worthy.

I think a lot of Broadway stars have a certain type of voice (kind of on the nasally side) that kind of irks me.  Kristen Chenoweth is one of them.  But then again, her speaking voice gets on my nerves as well.

  • If I remember correctly, Idina's voice was severely damaged by all the years she did Wicked. Her voice has never been the same after that. I saw Chess, which she did shortly after stopping Wicked I think, and I was horrified at the difference in her voice. I thought she was phenomenal in Wicked and Rent, and she came close to being what she once was in Frozen, but unfortunately that may be the best she can do now. I still love her though.

Yep she damaged it via poor technique. . .You can hear it when you listen to Rent, Wicked, and now.

And she's still using poor technique, so things may get even worse for her :/

  • Im glad that I'm not the only one who wasn't over the moon about the movie. I can kind of see the mommy logic that its a better message since its not all about finding a man, but I feel like those of us who few up on classic Disney princesses turned out fine (special snowflake excluded).

  • I liked the mother-daughter plot of Brave (and the complete lack of any romance) better than the sisters' 'true love' in Frozen, but I still cried my eyes out watching the latter. "Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?" just broke me, and still does after seeing the movie a couple times. Olaf's level of silliness should have been dumb, but I do find it funny, though I think Cristoff's voicing of Sven was genius and hilarious.

And yeah, the music. Though I admit I love singing "Let it Go," I can't stand how many people have posted videos of them/their kids singing it. I do it in private, knowing that only maybe .001% of the population actually have the pipes for it like Idina (I mean, it was written specifically with her fucking ridiculous range in mind). Lately I've had one of the parody versions stuck in my head, though. ("Here I Go--Despair of an Alto" very NSFW, by the way)
Her range is pretty standard for a Mezzo-Soprano. . . but I'm a soprano so what do I know?! :-P

I think you will enjoy this video:

    lol at that dad!

As for her range, um, I'm a mezzo-soprano myself. I cannot hit the notes she hits, not in Wicked, Rent, nor Frozen. I suppose that may be because my natural tone is better suited generally for country music (which I'm meh on) as opposed to the musical theatre/Disney style I love so much. I seemed to do okay with opera in my voice classes with lots of practice, and those pieces were all either mezzo or a soprano that didn't go quite so high.

I wish we could have seen what happened when the daughter turned around and realized what her dad was doing, lol!

I'd argue that she can't really hit the high notes in her"ranger" either, hence why she damaged her voice ;-)

She might actually be a soprano.

I am sooooo glad to hear other people say that they are not a fan of Idina Menzel's performance of "Let it Go."  I thought I was the only one, and was beginning to wonder if it was some sort of Disney brain-washing conspiracy.

I heard so much about the song, I decided to look it up on youtube.  I was sure that I was listening to a rehearsal, or something other than the final cut.  The next week, I finally watched the movie, and I couldn't believe that it was the same recording in the movie.  Her voice seems weak the first time she sings the words "let it go," like as if her air flow is unsteady.  When she hits the high notes, she sounds very flat, and her voice seems strained.  Almost sounds like she's yelling instead of singing.

I don't know if it's because I was a musician for so many years, so I'm just being overly critical of tone....or if it's because the song was hyped so much, that I expected it to be better - but it sounds terrible.  It actually makes ME hurt to hear her sing it, because I can feel my throat tightening, like as if I'm trying to squeeze out a higher note that my body can't create.

I imagine her voice sounds much better on stage - where she is forced to project to the audience, than it does in a recording studio.

I am not a fan of Demi Lavato's vocal style, but I enjoy her version.

Oh, and to answer the original post - Frozen is a cute movie, but I agree that it was over-hyped, and I'm not sure why.
