Odd escort card/favor advice

We're having an outdoor wedding at a campsite, and during the reception we'll have a campfire and s'mores bar. Instead of getting those bulk wooden skewers that mean you have to get pretty close to the fire (definitely too close for comfort for kids!), we're buying telescoping s'more sticks, like the picture. We figure we'd need at least 10 so people aren't fighting over sticks, but with about 50 guests, we can just get one for everyone.

So we decided we'd make them multi-purpose and have them double/triple as escort cards and favors. We're deciding between 2 ways of doing this:
1. Use a paint marker to write the person's name on the handle, then stick a marshmallow on the prongs with the table number written in edible ink.
2. Write names and table numbers on tags and tie them to the stick.

Clearly #1 is more unique, and the marshmallow on the pointy tip adds a (likely temporary) safety buffer around kids. But in the unlikely event those same kids (or squirrels, or whatever) are unsupervised and eat the marshmallows before people get their sticks, table numbers would disappear.

#2 is just as much work and expense, doesn't seem as fun/interesting, but is the option less likely to be messed up by possibly unpredictable edible ink and/or woodland creatures

Any thoughts on which would be better?

Re: Odd escort card/favor advice

  • I don't think I would be wanting to eat a marshmallow that has been handled, written on (even with edible ink) and then left out in the open air.

I would just do option #2.

  • Yeah, I'd go with number 2 here.

  • Haha, good point, though i wasn't expecting most people to actually eat that marshmallow. I wanted to make it safe to eat since the kids probably would, but we'd have plenty of other marshmallows by the fire.

So if i do nix the marshmallow, should i still paint names on the sticks and use a tag for table numbers or just do the tags for both?

I would just do a tag. I would never personalize a favor either with the couples name or the guests name. A lot of these type of favors end up at Goodwill (no offense) and when they are personalized it is even harder to get rid of.

  • I don't see any issue with you using them as place cards and favors and doing the tag label. But I just wanted to mention your reasoning "Instead of getting those bulk wooden skewers that mean you have to get pretty close to the fire". I don't see how these change the fact. You still need to be just as close to the fire, maybe you gain 2 whole inches to stand back. Unless these are like 5 feet long (which I doubt) then I don't see the difference between these and standard skewers lol.

  • I do realize that many will probably be left behind or thrown away, and I'm not at all offended by it. It's more of a solution to allow as many people as possible to easily use the s'mores bar than something I think people are going to take home and cherish. A few of my friends who camp will probably take one (or more) to put with their camping things since I've been asked many times where I got the ones I own, but we also have several non-campers and many guests flying in and these may not even be allowed in carry-on luggage.

@jenna8984 These are telescoping, so they get to be about 3-4 feet long. I own several of these and when I camp, families with kids often borrow mine over what they have because it helps them stay farther back. There are definitely longer ones out there, but my experience with them has been good.
  • Oh, cool- the picture made it look standard 12 inch long! I think that will work out great then, and like you said probably best not to personalize the handle so if someone doesn't want to take it home (or can't on the flight) then others who are likely to use it can take those. I still think it would be cute to put a marshmellow on the end of each one (no need to write on it) so there is no accidental poking and so people know what it's used for. That might sound dumb but as a non-camper I'd have no clue lol

  • Definitely go with option #2. Not as cute but much more practical. I, for one, would love to get one of those as a favor because FI and I go camping often and I love a good s'more.
  • After what's been said (about some people not taking them, other people wanting a few, etc.), I'd go with the tags. I would still put a marshmallow on the prongs, though, for "safety" as well as being decorative. And if you have camping newbies in the group, at least they'll know what it is for!

Hmm, thanks @MandyMost! I decided to take everyone's advice and just do the tags, which I'm a little bummed about because I liked the marshmallow idea. But you made me realize I can still stick a marshmallow on it :-)
  •      I just want to say I like this idea for a favor. Then again toasted marshmallows are one of my favorite things to eat so I'd keep it and use it, and maybe take a few that got left behind as well!
