'It didn't occur to me that people would want to sit.'

Y'all, this was my morning.

We had a networking event, with a keynote speaker. It started at 7.30 a.m. Ended at 9.30 a.m. An hour-plus of that is sitting and listening to the keynote speaker speak.

I showed up at 7.10, because I'm always early. The caterer, who was supposed to be there, was not yet there. I go into the room where the event is being held (Note: I did not plan, co-ordinate, host, or otherwise manage this breakfast.)

I notice there are 15 chairs and two high-top tables set up. Our RSVP count is 45 people. Finally the marketing person for the group shows up and I'm like, 'Where are the rest of the chairs?' She says, 'Oh, I thought people could just stand.'

I look at her. I say, 'And where are they supposed to eat breakfast? This is a breakfast meeting.' She says, 'Well, they can stand around and eat in the breakfast area, but we don't have tables for them to sit at, just high-top tables.'

There were FOUR high-top tables, which could fit a maximum of 5 people, so that's 20 people, of my 45 person list. 30 if you count the other room where the event was being held.

I'm like, 'Is there any way we can get more chairs?'

Her: 'Uhm...no. It didn't occur to me that people would want to sit to eat or to listen. I just figured they could stand. It's only an hour.'

Y'all, half my people left the event because they were frustrated. These are all business professionals and it's a networking event. They were so offended at being hosted badly, they left. And one of them told me that, in future, this particular group should not be allowed to host an event unless I am in charge of it.

So I got to stand for 1.5 hours in heels, listening to a boring speaker talk about a boring subject. And now I am crankypants.

Also, the bacon was undercooked and that made me sadface.

  • I feel your pain.

I am currently working with one of my team planning some training events and it has been an adventure.  Not quite that bad, but just enlightening as to how many people don't get the hows of hosting an event properly.

Not the bacon!  Forget having to stand in heels (which might actually murder me for 1.5 hours) that is where they lost their last shred of decency.

That's terrible! What a way to start your morning :/ I don't like standing still for more than 15 minutes, I can't imagine an hour and a half.
  • Is there any kind of feedback going to these speshul snowflake planners? Are they aware of how many people left because of the situation.

And....I am so very deeply sorry about the bacon.

  • Who undercooks BACON.

Guilty! I love it super squishy with zero crunch. I know I'm a wacko (I also like undercooked pasta & undercooked eggs)

  • I barley function in the morning. Barley. I do not stand. There is no standing and listing to someone at 7:30 in the morning. That does not happen.

I would have used my heel to gauge the moron who thought people could just stand around and eat undercooked bacon.

^This. Dragging me out of bed and across town to listen to some dude yak at 7:30 means there better be a shitload of coffee and sugar. I'd be sitting on the floor hooked up to a caffeine drip and throwing floppy bacon at the keynote.
  • Also, there was no silverware or utensils for the food (bacon, scrambled eggs, hashbrowns) until I raised a fuss about that.

And there was no sugar OR cream for the coffee.

    Without coffee, this is me:

  • What the hell? Do people really lack that much common sense these days?!

  • OMG! I laughed so hard at this I almost spit coffee at my computer. As if not having chairs was bad enough, they didn't have utensils or sugar and cream for the coffee. Do they live under a rock or something? This goes beyond a lack of common sense.

How would one eat scrambled eggs and hash browns without silverware? Had these planners never had food before? Do they eat with their hands?

I can drink black coffee. I can. I don't like too. Especially if it's not good coffee (I have very low expectations for this coffee). But who the fuck doesn't make sure there's cream and sugar for coffee?! Even if it's just powered creamer (I hat powered creamer), you make sure there is some damn cream and sugar!!!

I am also guilty of chewey bacon love. Bacon on top of stuff, crunchy. Slices of bacon, chewey.

I'd report that marketing person for their horrible planning job.
  • ....You guys don't eat eggs with your hands?

  • Who was the caterer on this?  Someone had to supply the food and that person should have had the proper utensils and condiments to go with them.  The chair issue is totally on the lady who planned it.

And while we are talking about bacon, I had to work in Towson MD for a few weeks and the Marriot had THE BEST bacon ever!  I probably ate about a half a pound of bacon each morning.  It was the perfect amount of crisp!

  • Complain and get your company's money back.
  • Actually...this didn't cost my company any money, other than my time to attend, which I have to do because this is a sub-group of our membership that I'm the staff contact for.

However, should this particular organisation wish to host an event in the future, there will be rules for it.

  • I told FI this story and he was dumbfounded. It makes the whole office seem unprofessional!
  • It really is a damn shame that you have to make rules for grown adults that mandate chairs for people to sit in, eating utensils, and appropriate condiments for beverages.

As someone who doesn't drink coffee, was there something else offered to drink, or would I have been stuck sneaking out to the water fountain with a styrofoam cup?  And were there options for those who didn't eat meat, pork, or animal products for breakfast?

I've apparently been here too long.
  • I wouldn't be happy about it but I would deal with the standing, lack of utensils, and only black coffee but for the love of all that is pork not undercooked bacon! I would have flipped my sh*t at that point. Bacon is like it's own category on the food pyramid called deliciously required!

Dear god. But hey they provided bacon and eggs in the first place so you should all be grateful.

My FI loves undercooked bacon, when he makes breakfast it's literally "sizz...sizz...drain" not even a full sizzle on each side!! *smh* , but I do love me some dippy eggs for my toast!
