Emmy for some reason when I read your post I read it as you splurging on a self cleaning cat and I wondered what the hell that means. lol.
    I did too!!!

Umm pitts were bred to fight other animals. They are animal aggressive.* Sure, some aren't, and you can train them carefully if you get them young, but that's obviously not the case here. I doubt your FI who I assume has never trained a dog before is suddenly going to be able to take that genetic drive out of your dog.

    * Many pitts are lovely beasties even to other animals, and they shouldn't all be painted negatively with a broad brush. However, there's evidence from prior behavior that this particular one isn't good with other animals. Please don't hate me, pitt-lovers.
WAY too broad of an over-generalization, even with the disclaimer. http://www.thepetcollective.tv/did-you-know-that-pit-bulls-were-known-as-the-nanny-dog/

    So did I!!

I have a sensitivity to ammonia, so the ammonia in urine triggers asthma attacks for me. It's not just a 'don't like' cats it's a 'prolonged exposure makes me sick.'

We were at DH's grandmother's house for Thanksgiving, just after she got the cat, and I had a horrible attack from the over-flowing litter box (which is another problem in and of itself; the cat is short-haired but usually has faeces clumped and matted in its fur because its litter pan is so disgusting).

But a self-cleaning litter box might be possible.

We had the self-cleaning litter box in college... wasn't super effective. Maybe they've improved since then, or maybe our cats took unnaturally large dumps, but it got clogged ALL the time and was miserable to clean.

You are grossly misinformed. Please stay out of my post with your pit bull prejudice. You have no idea what you're talking about.
Apparently I can't PM anymore with the knot bugs so I will do this here and I am sorry for posting again but I need to apologize. I checked what I thought was a reasonable source before posting, and I guess it wasn't. I am not prejudiced about pitts- I defend them regularly to a close friend who really really is. I know they're lovely people dogs, despite the widespread and often institutionalized prejudice against them particularly with kids. I had heard they tended to be animal aggressive compared to some other breeds (but along with tons of other breeds who were bred to hunt particular types of animal, for example). I am sorry that I was misinformed and that I have let the bad training of some animals color my opinion of others. All I meant to point out here is that if your dog is rough with others in play sometimes, it's probably not something someone who's never trained a dog before is going to be prepared to deal with. Please accept my apologies and forgive me for my ignorance.

  • Thank you. I really do appreciate that.

And now for a good update! FI thankfully no longer wants to bring the dog here! I think he finally realized that it was a bad idea.
  • Thank you for accepting my apology. And congratulations on convincing the FI! I hope the cousin's dog finds a good home.

OP, I'm glad your FI decided that it is a bad idea to adopt the dog.  IMO, pets are like children.  If one person in the relationship does not want to have or adopt a child or a pet, then they shouldn't.
tortoisebride Lots of dogs were bred for fighting, that doesn't mean those dogs are automatically going to be aggressive.  Also, big "scary looking" dogs are not the ones who bite most often.  http://www.dogguide.net/blog/2008/07/the-3-most-aggressive-dog-breeds-revealed-pit-bulls-rottweilers-youll-be-surprised/

Yay I'm glad FI came around! I admire his intentions but I don't think it would've been in the best interest of the dog, your dog, or you.

  • Think he could maybe have been thinking more along the lines of doing good by his cousin rather than doing good by the dog?
